Bishop’s Gaiters
By Eddie PomykalaMen’s Basketball Coach 1984-2008
Bruce Coulter and Garth Smith epitomized the character and spirit of not only Bishop’s Athletics but the University community itself. Both men left us this summer but their remarkable gift lives on in all of us.
Bruce and Garth taught us what it means to be Gaiters. Both men helped define the personality of the Bishop’s community: caring for each other, the concern for the individual, balance in your life, family. All these things went beyond the victories and championships Bruce and Garth achieved on the playing field, on the court and on the fairways. Their wives, Joyce and Sylvia also were a very big part of making sure you were included into the Gaiter family. They opened up their homes to all who were under their charge. They were simply just honest to goodness people.
Bruce and Garth led by example. They took their passions: Football, Basketball and Golf - what they did best- and inspired and molded not only generations of Bishop’s student-athletes but the community at large as well.
Bruce Coulter was Professor Touchdown - simply a masterful, creative coach on the gridiron who had a special touch with people. Bruce’s career as an administrator/coach was marked by many victories and championships but to Coulter, the most important thing was his special relationship with his players.
Garth Smith was basketball coach and golf pro- quiet and unassuming. Garth’s reach into the Townships community touched so many lives. His gift as a teacher was never more evident than when he tutored and taught Junior Golf. His Gaiter championship squads of ‘67 and ‘78 were marvelous ambassadors to Bishop’s.
Garth and Bruce arrived at Bishop’s in 1954 and 1961 respectively as coaches and administrators. You can say they were the original Department of Athletics. They planted the seeds that have grown so well over the years. All Bishop’s students, alumni, staff, faculty, administrators and friends have been beneficiaries of this Gaiter Pride that started back then.
So for those who wear Bishop’s purple, those who call themselves Gaiters... look up or bow your heads we will never forget and always be grateful for Bruce and Garth.

Golf at Bishop’s has a storied history from years of guidance under the legendary Garth Smith to having players such as Steve Davies and Jeff Cannon. The team won three conference championships in 1978, 1987 and 1993. More recently, the team has worked towards becoming a top intercollegiate program at Bishop’s. A fall training camp was introduced and thanks to the success of the 2017 season an indoor facility and team room is now a dedicated location for the Gaiters to train throughout the winter. During the year, the Gaiters play at the nationally recognized Milby Golf Club. Milby hosted the Canada Games in 2013 and a number of Future Links, amateur and professional events over the years. Looking ahead, the team continues to use the strong programs offered at Bishop’s along with small class sizes and one of the most beautiful cam-puses in Canada to attract top student-athletes.
