Dear Parents/Guardians

As you can see from this edition‘s newsletter, our students have been as busy as ever

on trips and visits, sporting events and our very own ―The Voice‖ competition.

I would ask you to remember all our students in your thoughts and prayers as the

examination season continues. I appreciate how pressurised this time is for parents

and carers, as well as students in preparing for these very important examinations. I

would like to particularly wish Year 13 and those students leaving us in Year 11 all the

very best for their future.

I wish you all a very happy half term and look forward to welcoming students back as

normal on Monday 3rd June.

Thank you for your continued support.

Diary of forthcoming events

This May, a lucky group of year 10 students was

hosted by Jesus College, Oxford for the day. It was a

wonderful opportunity for them to have a good look

around the city and experience how student life feels

at a large, elite institution. They were given

information about the admissions process and how to

develop themselves to become attractive candidates

in an extremely competitive field. There was an academic

element too; students were introduced to some of the

current experts in computer science who gave a

fascinating and enlightening talk about programming and

how it is an essential tool for both controlling mechanically

operated craft, and in combatting international cybercrime. It gave a clear insight into how students

will apply their knowledge in a wider context, and how many of the skills they acquire at university

will be transferrable across a range of industries.

This April a small group of students,

from 3 year groups, who had

identified themselves as interested in

a career in aeronautics, attended the

Ballantyne event at the Royal

Aeronautical Society in London. There

were some excellent speakers from

several aspects of the industry

including mechanical engineering,

research and development and

operational skills including pilots. The

event also provided opportunities for

the students to undertake skills and

aptitude tests and engineering

challenges. Josh Covington, Jelani

Newell and Chan Basco were rightly

proud to do so well in the engineering

challenge, being only narrowly beaten

by a team from another school. The

wealth of information they gleaned

from this event was fantastic, and

they have a better developed

understanding of routes into the

industry, including apprenticeship

and graduate options.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is one of the foremost social science

universities in the world. The Complete University Guide 2014 has ranked LSE as the top university in the

capital and third best UK university overall, behind Oxford and Cambridge. A group of our year 10

students enjoyed an afternoon working with LSE undergraduates exploring the types of courses and

qualifications available to them at university in general, the LSE specifically, and the types of careers

these may lead to. The interactive workshop was followed by a tour of the Houghton Street site and

an opportunity to hear undergraduate stories and anecdotes about what past LSE students had

gone on to experience and achieve.

It was an excellent event that our students found really motivating, and was an excellent way to get

an insight into why and how a university education can launch a career.

Trip to LSE

On Tuesday 23rd April, Bishop Justus held its 3rd celebration of RE Day which was attended by 150 students from 9

local Church of England Primary Schools. During the day, students had an Art/DT lesson with a focus on Christian

values; time to socialise with each other after a lovely lunch provided by Monica and her team, followed by each

school running a stall in a ‗market place‘, where each school focussed on a specific Christian value. The RE Day

ended with a lively debate in the main hall where many students gave their thoughts and opinions on issues raised

throughout the day. One of our Chaplaincy Captains, Harry True made the following reflections on the day:

―It was wonderful to see the students of the local primary schools showing such a keen interest in a Christian life. The

pupils and teachers had set up stalls to explore each aspect of Christian beliefs, such as ‗hope‘. One student was

guided through a tent containing pictures of hardship and poverty in the world, beneath were bible quotes in which

you were asked how they could give hope to these people. The pupils were very respectful and developed an

understanding of the ‗real world‘, as was explained to me by a pupil of St. George‘s when asked ‗where do Christians

find hope?‘ she replied ‗when we are hurt, God gives us hope to carry on‘. This showed that the students did value

what they learnt that day and could explain it with confidence.

Although pupils showed respect at each stall and viewed the displays seriously, there was no lack of excitement in

the room; the opportunity of a new space with a welcoming atmosphere and lots to do, fuelled the children‘s curiosity.

There were stalls where the pupils could get involved such as shredding a piece of paper on which you wrote

something you were sorry for; another involved writing a prayer on a coloured leaf and placing it on branches.

The RE Day showed how important these types of ‗student development‘ experiences are not only to the pupils but to

the role of Bishop Justus within their lives. The image of Bishop Justus, I would imagine, has changed, from their

worries of transition into secondary school, to an environment in which to learn and become an individual and grow —

with a Christian ethos at its heart, always there to support you.‖

RE Celebration Day

Thursday 25th April saw Year 10 present their BTec

Performing Arts final showcase. Two plays were performed to

a packed audience in the Drama Studio, which included

friends, family and teachers.

‗Living with Lady Macbeth‘ featured a brave and challenging

performance by Chloe Turner as Lily. Some fantastical

‗deaths‘ were performed by the ensemble who used quick

costume changes to play several characters.

‗Sparkleshark‘ included one of the best performances we

have seen this year with Hayden Mampasi as Jake. The

whole cast worked well together to interpret the comedy,

fantasy and the difficult movement and reactions required by

the play.

Congratulations to all the students who performed.

London Mozart Players

On 16th and 17th April, ten lucky music students from Year 9 had the

opportunity to take part in a two day workshop led by three musicians from

the prestigious London Mozart Players. The students then had the opportunity

to give afternoon performances to the residents in three nursing homes –

Elmwood in Bickley and Prince George and Queen Mary House in Chislehurst.

The performances were a big hit with the residents and the students involved

benefited greatly from working with such talented musicians.

On 2nd May, students and staff in the Music Department took part in a trip to

the Royal Albert Hall for a Symphonic Rock concert.

The Voice

This term has seen the first ever year of The Voice at Bishop Justus. Our very own versions of Tom Jones, Jessie J,

will.i.am and Danny O‘Donoghue (AKA Mr Gibbs, Miss Sheppard, Mr Tarrant and Mr Davis) were judges in the blind

auditions, where 22 acts made it through to the quarter finals. The final was held on 16th May in the main hall, with the

following finalists: Sophie Ringham, Niamh O‘Brien, Jessica Corrigan and Jessica Cummings & Band. The competition

was fierce but the overall winner was the fabulous Jessica Corrigan with her brilliant renditions of ‗It‘s, Oh, So Quiet‘ by

Bjork, and ‗Popular‘ from ‗Wicked‘. Jessica has now been invited to record the winner‘s single which will be available on

the school website in the near future. Well done to Jessica and to all the participants!

Last term, a group of sixth form students called on Year 7 to help raise funds for the Elimu Foundation. This charity helps to

build schools and nurseries in Kenya and in June, sixth formers and teachers will be heading there for a week to help with

this work.

The challenge started in an RE lesson where Year 7 read The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). With making

money in mind, each student was given a £1 coin and asked to make it grow over the coming weeks. As they tracked their

progress in Maths lessons, it was clear that the year group was far exceeding all expectations.

After a busy few weeks of cake sales, car washes, sponsored runs and art sales, the fundraising total surpassed a

phenomenal £3,000! Not only this but their efforts resulted in four students receiving Blue Peter badges for their hard

work. Huge congratulations to all students involved and a big THANK YOU from the Elimu group off to Kenya this summer!

Young Enterprise Area Final

Bishop Justus‘ very own Young Enterprise Company took part

in the Young Enterprise Bromley area final on the evening of

28th March at St Olave‘s Grammar School. Our team was up

against fierce competition from companies based at Newstead

Wood and St Olave‘s schools.

All companies had to prepare a financial report, promote a

trade stand, answer questions from the judge and give a

presentation.

Our company performed admirably and gave an excellent

account of themselves; the presentation was particularly

impressive with all members performing with poise and

confidence.

They were pipped to the post by the Newstead Wood Company

which was selling a discount voucher card. However, much

has been learnt by the Bishop Justus team and the variety of

new and transferable skills will prove invaluable as they move

through higher education and employment. Well done

Last weekend Jessica Frankland swam in the Regionals; she reached the final in all her events. Her

highest placing was a bronze in the 200m backstroke. This is the best she has achieved at this

level. In the England 16 year olds‘ category, Jessica is ranked in the top 20.

This follows her success at county level where she was top girl in Kent in her age group! Her parents

say they are very proud of her not only because she puts a lot of effort into developing her potential

in her swimming, but she also works very hard in achieving good results at school.

Charlotte (Lottie) Gregory represented the

school in the LSSA London Secondary

Schools Swimming Championship on the

28th April. She swam in 2 Events; the first

being the 100m Breaststroke in which she

came a respectable 8th and in the afternoon

after a long wait she swam the 200m

Breaststroke in which she set a personal

best and came 4th. All the results, including

times and positions, can be found on the

This weekend the U16s

Crystal Palace Ladies

Football Club, sealed their

double victory with a 6-1 win

over Crawley Wasps - Olivia

scoring a fantastic 4th goal.

Doubles partners, Olivia Parson and Rachel Le

Comber, took part in the AGEON Junior Tennis

International. They came from an ‗unseeded‘

position to win their first round match against

an Italian pair: 6-4 6-1, knocking out the no. 2

seeds in the quarter finals in a tough 3-set

battle: 6-2, 3-6, 11-9. Next came a close semi-

final against the no. 3. seeds - a tough

Scottish pair; winning: 6-4, 6-4 to make the

final.

The girls were defeated: 6-0, 6-3 by a fantastic young pair who regularly play for Great

Britain as top Nationals.

Well done to Olivia and Rachel for achieving runners up in this tournament.

International.

Olivia also qualified for the singles main draw, but got knocked out in the first round by a

tough opponent.

Year 10 student, Rian Bray, is taking part in a

Kent Vs. Surrey U15 Football Game on Monday

3rd June.

It is being held at The Gallagher Stadium, Maid-
