In so many ways, Bishop O’Connell givesproud testimony to the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Earlierthis month I had the pleasure of opening sixenvelopes that had been left on my desk. Each contained a gift to our Annual Fund. Each came from a member of the Sisters,Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Marywho serve at our school.
Over my five-year tenure here, I have beenconsistently impressed by the engagementof our village of workers, believers and supporters, bound together by a single purpose. Within the building, many of our 150 faculty and staff members volunteer to serve on academic, disciplinary accreditation, personnel and policy committees and, like our sisters, donatetheir personal financial resources to schoolfundraising activities. Outside our walls, anarmy of parents serves on the PTO, arts andathletic booster organizations, the All-NightGrad Party, and on the gala and golf committees. They and a good number ofour alumni, past-parents and friends alsogenerously contribute their talents and their treasures by serving on our Board ofGovernors and its committees, and by investing in the creation of opportunitiesthat benefit our students.
Recently, our village has used its financial resources for its children to help purchasecomputers and LCD projectors, crew shellsand trombones, microscopes and softballs. Our village has helped to renovate our gym,our chapel, our training room, weight roomand bathrooms. And it has contributed generously to provide the extra resourcesneeded to attract, train and retain qualityteachers in a competitive market. Our villagehas watched over and supported its childrenby attending their games and concerts, byproviding them help with their homework, andby listening, healing and encouraging themafter every fall, wrong turn and bump in theroad. And our village has prayed unceasinglyfor its children, placing them always into theloving care and gentle protection of Jesus andhis mother, Mary.
A senior girl came to my door recently andsaid, “Mr. Breen, I love this place.” I waspleased, but not surprised. Of course sheloves this place. This is our village. This is ourholy ground. This is DJO. So, on her behalf, Ithank you for being there for her and for supporting her on her journey. I am proud ofthe achievements of our students. I am proudof our community and its commitment to support them as they grow in learning and infaith. And, like you, I am proud to be a smallpart of what has been, what is now and whatwill be in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Barry Edward BreenPresident
Dear Friends of Bishop O’Connell High School,

ACADEMICSAs a college preparatory high school, we continue to evaluate our academic program with our students’ future goals in mind. Nearly 100 percent of Bishop O’Connell graduates matriculate into a four-year university, so it is imperative that we provide them with the background and skills necessary for success. The 2008-2009 academicyear saw a few additions to the course offerings at Bishop O’Connell High School which included: Sports Entertainment and Marketing, Musical Theatre and The History of Warfare.
Addressing the need for study skills for our students hasbeen both a concern and a priority for the past year and ahalf. After much planning, we were able to provide a StudySkills course taught by a team of O’Connell teachers to ourentering ninth grade students as they began their highschool education last August. Freshmen learned to honetheir note-taking and test-taking skills, as well as work onreading and time-management skills. Use of the acquiredskills was the expected norm in their classes during this pastyear and beyond. Because of the success of the program, wewill continue it for the class of 2013.
As the academic overseer, it is my pleasure to honor themany achievements of our students during this past schoolyear. One of our graduates, Brendan Neyland, was a NationalMerit Finalist and 21 of this year’s graduating class wereNational Merit Commended Students. On Awards Night wehonored 20 graduating seniors who had earned thedistinction of AP Scholar and one student who was lauded asan AP Scholar with Honor, based on performances in the APtesting of their sophomore and junior years. This year, 411students sat for 856 AP examinations in 24 subject areas.
Throughout the year, many of our students gainedrecognition for outstanding academic performance including39 awards in the National Latin Exam and four students whoachieved national ranking in Le Grand Concours – a nationalFrench exam. Thousands of dollars in prize money wereawarded to O’Connell students for their outstandingperformance in speech and essay contests. We are especiallyproud of four of our students who earned places in nationalcompetitions to be held in various cities in the country overthe summer months.
Our science department had great reason to celebrate thisyear with their exceptional achievements in the regional andstate science fairs. Several students will continue with theirresearch for presentation later this year.
This will be my last communication with the O’Connellcommunity as I prepare to begin a new path in my life atImmaculata University. I take with me many wonderfulmemories and relationships from my nine years atO’Connell and a heartfelt thanks to all who haveenhanced these years that seemed to have flown by. God bless all of you.
(Sister Regina Joseph Ryan, I.H.M. – Former Assistant Principal for Academics)

SPIRITUALITYEach year, we work together to develop and nurture the seed of faithin the hearts of our students. It is not easy to measure the success ofour labors. The workings of the Holy Spirit cannot ever be calculated, summarized, and reported. Nonetheless, we put forth our prayerfulbest efforts in the certain knowledge that God will make good comeeven from our weaknesses.
This year, the Chaplain’s office had two major initiatives.First, we totally revamped the retreat experience for allfour grades. Second, we created a new “coffee shop”for students to create a sense of welcome, and toprovide a setting for discussion. Our retreats for seniorswere 24 hour events—the first overnight retreats atO’Connell in nearly 20 years. The theme for the seniorswas “Who are you, and where are you going?”
Providing time for prayer, discussion, Mass, confession, and relaxation, the retreats brought faculty and studentstogether to help prepare our seniors for the spiritualchallenges they will face in college. Our underclassretreats were held on three separate days, once for eachclass. The theme for the retreats was Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 –“There is an appointed time for everything underheaven.” Students had the opportunity to discuss thechallenges facing them at each grade level, to listen to upperclass speakers share their experiences of struggleand growth over the years, and to celebrate thesacraments. These retreats gave every student in our
school a chance to call “time out” from their ordinarystresses and pressures to focus for a moment on whatGod is asking of them, and to think about where Hewishes to lead them.
As always, the Chaplain’s office offers its regularactivities: providing confession and adoration of theBlessed Sacrament two days each week; offering Masseach day and approximately each month for the entireschool; leading the students to Washington D.C. inJanuary for the annual March for Life; preparing newconverts for reception of the sacraments; welcomingpastors from around the Diocese for Mass and lunchwith their students; inviting guest speakers to addressthe students on a variety of spiritual and moral issues;and striving to provide a continuous “ministry ofpresence” to remind students of God’s abidingpresence in their lives, at all times.
(Rev. James Hudgins ’88 – Chaplain)
