SOUTH Dublin County Council, in conjunction with the National Roads Authority, will sign the €70 million contract on 7th March which will allow work to commence in the first week of July this year.

Speaking on Monday 18th February at a ‘Special Information Meeting’ in the Green Isle Hotel, Local TD Deputy Keating outlined that “currently over 100,000 vehicles pass through the junction every day and Newlands Cross has been on the plans to have major construction

work undertaken, which will see it being by-passed by 60% of traffic coming onto that junction.”

The meeting, which was designed to hear the public’s views and concerns in relation to the development, was attended by 182 people. Unemployment figures increasein Dublinmid-westACCORDING to the latest figures which have been released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), unemployment figures in Dublin mid-west have started to rise once again.

Reports suggest that there has been an increase in the amount of people signing onto the live register, during the month of January compared to the same period in December of 2012. Figures show that in both Clondalkin and Lucan, figures have risen from 8,654 in December to 8,854 in January.

In the wake of this increase, Dublin mid-west representative Eoin

Ó Broin has called on the Government to introduce new and improved measures to tackle the problem of long-term unemployment.

Ó Broin has said the problem has remained the same for too long and that something must be done to ease the situation. “After a drop in the number of people signing on in November the number of people on the live register in Dublin Mid-West has started to rise again,” said Ó Broin.

“The figures also highlighted a worrying increase in the level of youth unemployment up to

1,714 in January. Long term unemployment is reaching a crisis point, particularly in Lucan and Clondalkin. There is a need for Government to introduce measures targeted at those who have been out of work long-term, especially those under the age of 25,” he continued.

Ó Broin also stated that youth unemployment is still a major problem, and should be one of the most pressing issues for the Government.

“Eamon Gilmore has said that youth unemployment will be the key theme of Irelands six month presidency of the European

Union. Yet there is no extra funding for measures aimed at giving young people the skills they need to get back to work. Nor is there any significant money being invested by the government in creating jobs,” said Ó Broin.

“Unless the government start to match their spin with real investment the unemployment figures will continue to rise. Sinn Féin is calling on Fine Gael and Labour to support the National Youth Council of Ireland’s call for an investment of up to €300,000 to support a Youth Guarantee that would insure that young

people have a job, a training place or an internship within six months of becoming unemployed.,“ he continued.

Recently, the European Central Bank and the IMF have told the Government that Ireland needs to reign in unsustainable mortgage and SME loan arrears in order to take on the problem of unemployment head on. According to the most recent figures from the Central Bank, more than one in 10 homeowners were in arrears of 90 days or more.

Deputy Keating pointed out that he met with South Dublin County Council a number of times prior to the public meeting. He said that he received a commitment from the Local Authority that, as soon as the contract is signed, a number of information meetings will be set up which he will chair to ensure that the construction phase will take the impact of local residents into consideration.

Keating also expressed concerns of a number of issues which needed addressing, including; the noise factor, the light factor, the parking of vehicles inside estates and streets, as well as the use of heavy machinery during school times and during the period when schools open and

close. He said that he will be meeting with the contractor and a representative body of residents to discuss the hours of construction, the impact of machinery in the area, and the noise, light and other environmental factors.

Summing up the Newlands Cross By-Pass development at the meeting, Keating said that the work will commence about the first week of June and it will take 21 months for completion and will be “one of the major constructions in Dublin Mid-West for some time.” He ensured locals that he has received a commitment from South Dublin County Council that all three lanes on each side of the road will remain open during the construction phase.

STAR Wars fans get excited, because according to new reports, a new stand-alone movie featuring Yoda could be in the works. According to website Ain’t It Cool News, the movie will be independent from the Star Wars franchise, the next instalment of which will be JJ Abrams’ 2015 effort.

The pocket-sized Jedi master has become

an icon over the years as one of the best-loved characters in the Star Wars movies, so it’s no surprise that there are rumblings in the movie world of a Yoda spin-off. Other offshoots have been rumoured too for the other characters.

‘To start with, they’re going to focus on established characters and do solo films,’

claims Ain’t It Cool News editor Harry Knowles, who is said to know the inner workings of the deal between Disney and LucasFilm. (Last year, Disney bought Lucas Film and the rights to the Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion).

specifics are sparse, but Kathleen Kennedy is putting together a Star Wars slate.

A new debt deal drafter by the Dáil as part of a deal with the European Central Bank (ECB) could potentially see the liquidation of the Irish Bank Resolution Corp (IBRC).

The deal was announced by Minister for Finance Michael Noonan who has said that the plan will be put into action if it receives backing from the ECB’s governing council meeting in Frankfurt later this month.

The announcement marks another major step on the road to recovery for the struggling Irish economy. The Government has said that whilst there will still be cuts on spending over the next two years, this new deal will mean that Ireland will no longer have to borrow an extra €10 billion over the next 10 years.

Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide will both be sent into liquidation with the emergence of this new deal, and a line will be drawn under the disastrous bank guarantee which seen the bad debts of these institutions being placed onto Irish citizens.

Once the legislation is passed, the liquidators appointed to the IBRC will be given the task of winding up its business and operations.

Fine Gael Dun Laoghaire TD, Mary Mitchell O’ Connor, has said that the deal agreed by the Irish Government to ease the debt burden on the Irish people from the Anglo promissory notes has delivered a significant boost to Ireland’s economic future.

“The deal agreed by the Irish Government is a hugely significant step forward in our economic recovery. Thanks to the savings delivered as part of the deal, the budgetary adjustment needed for next year will be €1 billion less. Furthermore, we will have to borrow €20 billion less on the international markets over the next decade as a result of this deal. This will have a major impact on our long term economic sustainability and our prospects for growth and job creation.

“There are a number of important elements of this deal,

which will help economic growth and recovery. The promissory notes are being replaced with a long-term bond; essentially what was a high cost, short-term loan is being exchanged for long-term, cheap, interest only loans. We are stretching the period to repay the loans over 40 years, and the first principal payment won’t be made until 2038. The last payment will be made in 2053.

The IRBC was established in July of 2011, when the business of Irish Nationwide Building Society was transferred to Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Limited.

Minister Noonan has also said that the decision to liquidate the IBRC will not affect any other Irish banks, commenting that IBRC deposit accounts transferred to both AIB and Permanent TSB will remain untouched from the deal.

According to Fine Gael Dublin Central Deputy, Paschal Donohoe, this new deal is the most significant step towards recovery that Ireland has seen in

the past couple of years.“This Government has been

doing everything in its power to make our debt more sustainable and to get the country up off its knees. There has been considerable goodwill accrued in Europe in respect of the reform programme being undertaken and the sacrifice being made by the Irish people. Much work has been done to restore our reputation internationally and to tell the rest of the world that Ireland is open for business and back in the game.

“Negotiations on restructuring the promissory notes are still on-going with the ECB and I am confident of a favourable outcome and that the Government will get a deal over the line. In the meantime, this first step, which will see the door closing on what has been the most toxic bank in Irish history, signals a brighter future ahead for the Irish people.”

Government announce promising new bank deal

RECENTLY in the Dáil, Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has expressed concern to the Minister for Finance and Financial Regulator regarding the lack of a code of conduct for receivers of buy-to-let properties. Ellis drew attention to the vulnerability of tenants currently occupying these properties. He stated that with the buy-to-let crisis worsening, more and more tenants are receiving notifications informing them of receivers having been appointed. This results in the tenant from that point having to deal directly with the receiver with regard to rent payment etc. Where as many receivers will treat tenants with the respect they deserve, the lack of a code of conduct being in place may result in

this not always being the case. “At the centre of this code of conduct must be a commitment by the receivers to honour the terms and obligations of the tenancy agreement. No tenant should be allowed go homeless or lose their deposit as a result of the appointment of a receiver.”

Deputy Ellis went on to state some shocking figures, “There is a crisis in the buy-to-let market. Some 29% of the 150, 000 buy-to-let mortgages are in arrears, 17% are in arrears for ninety days or more. This means a staggering 26, 770 rental properties are at risk of serious default.” Ellis concluded by saying that the government must instruct the Central Bank to implement a clear code of conduct through discussions with banks and receivers.

The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

Consultation process launched on back to school costsBY mid-July parents are hounded with adverts and posters’ declaring that back to school is coming. A time when most children are enjoying their break from school parents begin the uphill battle of sending them back in September, with the recent cuts to Child Benefits and the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowances in last years budget, parents are more worried about this coming September than last year.

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance was cut by a third dropping from €150 to €100 for primary school children and reducing the allowance from €250 to €200 for children attending secondary school.

With the cost of sending a child to primary school

estimated at around €487 and the cost of sending a child to secondary school estimated at €620 the cuts have large implications for struggling families. Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says “There is no denying the high costs involved in sending a child to school. In fact, it can often lead to many sleepless nights for parents. Uniforms, books and indeed voluntary contributions often leave a sizable dent in parent’s pockets.”

Ó Ríordáin has launched a consultation process on behalf of the Education & Social Protection Committee to highlight ways to alleviate the burden on parents. This process will run from 7th of February to 15th of March.

There are a few ways to help

with the costs of school supplies by possibly introducing a book rental scheme similar to the one in Northern Ireland could reduce the costs by a significant amount, Deputy Ó Ríordáin went on to say “There are however a number of things that can be done to alleviate this burden.”

Ríordáin continued, “An obvious way to make savings would be to look at the possibility of implementing a book rental scheme similar to that in Northern Ireland. This could alleviate some of the burden placed on parents and I hope to review this as part of my report. Such a move has already been recognized by the Minister for Education &

Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD, when he recently encouraged schools to invest in such a scheme by issuing a series of guidelines and recommendations.”

Hopefully when this report is published it will lighten the burden placed upon the struggling families with school attending children, this consultation is also accepting submissions from the general public. If you wish to make a submission email [email protected] with the subject line Back to School Costs.

100 New Jobs

FACEBOOK is to create more than 100 new roles at its international HQ, Facebook Ireland, updating its status to 500 jobs in Dublin as it continues its current phase of expansion.

Facebook is seeking staff to work in a range of functions and has already kicked off the hiring process by advertising the jobs on their online notice board www.facebook.com/jobs. Facebook’s Dublin office is its international headquarters and currently employs around 400 people in a broad range of roles including user operations, advertising, sales, policy and safety.

The roles will have a significant economic impact and Facebook’s Dublin operation works closely with

the Irish government, via the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and IDA Ireland.

Minister Bruton has met senior executives from Facebook in their California headquarters as part of an intensive programme of IDA investment missions since taking office.

Making the announcement, Minister Bruton said: “ICT is a key sector targeted in the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs, and we are determined to build on the major successes in this sector in recent years, in particular by supporting the further development of the thriving cluster around Dublin’s docklands. Today’s announcement of a significant expansion by one of the biggest companies on the internet, with

the creation of 100 high-end jobs, is a major endorsement of the tech environment in Dublin and further confirmation of our city’s status as the internet capital of Europe. This represents a significant economic commitment to Ireland by Facebook and I wish them every success with their operations here”.

Mr Gareth Lambe, Acting Head of Office for Facebook Ireland said: “Ireland is a great hub of international tech talent which is one reason why Facebook has its international HQ in Dublin. Today’s announcement means we will be expanding our workforce across multiple disciplines such as user operations, safety and advertising. These jobs, which

reflect growth in markets across Europe but also the Middle East and Africa, mean we will not only be recruiting from the local economy but supporting local businesses by increasing our footprint.”

The Chief Executive of IDA Ireland, Mr Barry O’Leary said: ``Social media remains a key strategic industry for Ireland in terms of job creation, and no brand name better represents that sector’s thriving growth than Facebook. Employment intensive services are a key focus of IDA’s Horizon 2020 strategy. The latest expansion and the nature of the employment being created illustrate how important the company is to the digital media cluster Ireland has developed over recent years’’.

IN June 2011, the teaching council published Initial Teacher Education: Criteria and Guidelines for Programme Providers. That document noted the Council’s intention to initiate a consultation process in relation to revised minimum entry requirements for entry onto programmes of initial teacher education.

That process has now ended, and a consultation document has been published setting out the proposed revised minimum entry requirements, as well as the suggested timeframe for introduction of these revised requirements. The Council has held meetings with key stakeholders, including principals’ bodies, school management bodies, Higher Education Institutions, teacher unions, mentors, student teachers and newly qualified teachers, to present its proposals and hear feedback in relation to the matter. The Council also invited written feedback in the form of an

online survey.Minimum entry

requirements for programmes of initial teacher education are set by the Minister for Education and Skills, in consultation with the Teaching Council. To be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (post-primary) candidates must have obtained a third-level degree deemed by the Teaching Council to be suitable for the purposes of teaching at post-primary level.

The Teaching Council public consultation on entry requirements for the teaching profession, offered educators the opportunity to debate the current requirement for Higher Level Irish for all prospective primary school teachers.

Labour party TD for Dublin Bay North, Aodhan O Riordain, said;

“It is the experience of many who work in areas of acute disadvantage that the requirement for ‘Honours Irish’ effectively acts as a

barrier to poorer students who aspire to become primary school teachers. DEIS secondary schools are rarely in the position to offer Higher Level Irish for their students. Poorer families do not have the resources to pay for grinds or to send their children to the Gaeltacht on summer courses.

The requirement for teachers to have the ability to teach Irish is a corner-stone of the Irish education policy and must be preserved. However, we must find more inclusive ways to empower students from all backgrounds to up-skill in language instruction during their training years. It is surely the skills on exiting training college that are paramount and not the examination results achieved on exiting secondary school.

I will shortly be launching a programme with Marino Institute of Education and Northside Partnership which will help students in Northside DEIS schools who wish

to become primary school teachers, to receive extra tuition in Irish. Students from nine different schools will benefit from this programme. However, I believe it is time for the Teaching Council to have a more realistic and modern approach to the skill-set that should be demanded of teachers. Irish is a beautiful language which is an integral part of our identity as a people. It should not however be used as a barrier to advancement of those who could greatly enrich our school classrooms.”

The Council has also supported the publication of a career advice booklet on Teaching and Education in Ireland. The booklet, produced by GradIreland, includes advice on teaching qualifications, routes of entry to the teaching profession, the types of teaching roles available, and career profiles. You can download the booklet from gradireland.com.

ST. James’s Hospital, Dublin has suffered a nine million euro cut in recent days. The hospital is one of the largest in Ireland and has now been given a budget of two hundred and sixty three million for this year. Other hospitals such as Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and Temple Street Children’s University Hospital have also been hit

with cuts of 2.8% and 2% respectively. A spokesperson for St. James’s decided to make no comment regarding the cut.

Other hospitals fortunately have had their budgets increased such as Mayo General Hospital which has received a 10% increase.

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South Central Aengus Ó Snodaigh has said in

outrage “The cut to St James’ Hospital, the busiest hospital in the state, is completely unjustifiable and makes a lie of Minister James Reilly’s commitment that money will follow the patients.”

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Health and Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called for clarity regarding hospital budgets.

OVER THREE YEARS OF NAMA AND JUST 179 HOMES DELIVERED FOR SOCIAL HOUSING

Written by Phillip O’Shea

THE local authority waiting lists at the end of last year stood at 98,318 or approximately 250,000 persons. That figure is up from 58,000 in 2008 and all indications suggest that the figure will continue to rise. In late 2011, the National Asset Management Agency drew up a list of just over 2,000 houses and apartments which would be made available for social housing. The agency was to make these properties available through leasing agreements with local authorities. Last year NAMA renewed its commitment to providing social housing by saying it could provide 3,949 units after a new NAMA agency was set up. NAMA Asset Residential Property Services Ltd, was set up to acquire from NAMA debtors vacant properties deemed suitable.

In response to a parliamentary question which found that just 179 homes have been delivered for social housing despite NAMA being in existence since late 2009, Sinn Fein housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD said;

“This just isn’t good enough, so little has been delivered in a time when housing waiting lists are bursting at the seams and people are finding it harder to keep their home or to afford spiralling rents.

The social lease system pursued by the

government is a lucrative one for developers within NAMA who will have their properties’ rents hassle free and will be returned their properties once the lease ends. These are developers who have been bailed out by the people already and are being fed by NAMA but have repaid nothing in the way of social dividend.

Thousands of NAMA units which could be new homes for people who have been waiting years are lying idle. The Minister for Housing and the department need to get tough with developers and NAMA and to ensure this is delivered on soon. We cannot let another year go by where NAMA houses only a handful of people. We have waited long enough.

The minister must also pave the way to allow local authorities to take over unfinished estates which have no bond and are in the control of a financial institution or NAMA so that these sites can be completed and people can finally be housed. This is all about the political will to provide much needed housing, either the government has it or it doesn’t.”

Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan, TD, stated that she expected a significant increase in the number of NAMA properties selected and delivered for social housing in 2013.

“The Government is

committed to securing social housing from the NAMA portfolio. In the past 12 months Minister Hogan and I have worked closely with all parties, including the Housing Agency, local authorities, the Approved Housing Bodies and NAMA, to overcome the legal and other obstacles that were impeding the availability of suitable properties for social housing. That work is now complete and I expect a significant increase in the number of properties that will become available in 2013.”

Among the important initiatives finalised in 2012 which will make a significant impact this year were:

- The establishment by NAMA of a special purpose vehicle to take ownership of properties where there is an established demand – thereby enabling the direct negotiation of leases with approved housing bodies.

- Agreement between NAMA and Approved Housing Bodies of a framework for leases that can apply in the vast majority of cases.

- The announcement in Budget 2013 by Minister Howlin of €10m in funding which will drive the process in the coming year.

Crumlin LosesSport Funding

THE Government has rejected the extension to the pavilion at Willie Pearse Park in Crumlin under the sports capital grant programme.Ray McHugh, from Sinn Fein said, “The Gaa, Boxing and Soccer clubs and working very hard for the children of the area by giving time and energy and are deserving of support, and to fail because the application was deemed invalid is sole destroying.Ray also stated, this is deeply disappointing and called oh Minister Ring to meet with a delegation from the clubs as a matter of urgency,Crumlin and the people of the area deserve this funding.

Alzheimer’s is one of the many ailments that are relatively unknown to the medical world; despite millions of dollars being spent on research there haven’t been any truly major breakthroughs in a long time, at least until now. This week a medical report released shows that there might be a very promising new treatment available for Alzheimer’s patients in the near future, and it comes in the form of an implant.

The new Alzheimer’s implant is still in development and testing, but preliminary reports are looking very promising. The implant was designed around a heart pacemaker and doctors say that it functions very similarly. Basically the implant will continue to stimulate the patient’s brain in a number of locations with various inputs that are apparently able to significantly reduce the effects of the disease on

the brain.This is amazing news

as it may be the biggest treatment breakthrough ever for Alzheimer’s patients. Doctors are working hard to begin more in-depth testing so that hopefully they can release this treatment and control system to the public. For the millions of people suffering from the disease this could be the greatest medical advancement of all time.

NEW DEFENCE FORCES BILL HEADS TO THE SEANAD

THE new Defence Forces (Second World War Amnesty and Immunity) Bill which first came to prominence in 2012 has recently been presented to Seanad Éireann as it moves ever closer to being passed.

The Bill looks to meet the Government’s commitment to deal, in a positive way, with the issue of those who deserted Irish defence forces to join with the Allied forces during the course of the Second World War. It will do this in a way that does not expose the state to any liability in respect of those individuals.

During the Second World War, Irish forces had approximately 42,000 serving citizens, and over time, it is estimated that

over 7,000 of these deserted. Of these 7,000, over 2,500 personnel either returned or were apprehended by military tribunal. The remainder were subject to dismissal under the Emergency Powers Act of 1946.

The Emergency Powers Act of 1946 stated that deserters were forced to forfeit pay and allowances received from serving in Irish defence forces, as well as disqualifying them from holding any office or employment remunerated from the Central Fund for seven years. The effects of this act caused great hardship to many individuals and families, as well as the shunning of many individuals around Ireland.

The Bill, which was

published by Minster for Justice and Defence Alan Shatter, will now provide both a pardon and an apology for the soldiers who were affected by The Emergency Powers Act of 1946. In June of 2012, Shatter had apologised on behalf of the Government for the manner in which deserters were ostracized on their return to Ireland after the Second World War.

In December of 2012, Shatter then commented on the Bill by saying: “I hope that the action we have taken on this issue will put to rest the concerns of those individuals still alive, who fought for freedom and against tyranny with the allied forces. I also hope it lifts a veil for the families of those who have

already died.”Shatter also outlines in the

Bill that those who are still viable for prosecution due to desertion or being absent without leave under the 1946 Act will receive immunity.

Labour TD Gerald Nash, who has been one of the biggest supporters of the new Bill, has commended the move by Government, noting that its introduction has been long overdue.

“I am pleased that they have lived to see the day that there is a cross party and cross community consensus in this State that the way in which many of them were treated on their return from the theatres of war was unacceptable and that we are now prepared to apologise for that,” said Nash.

Ireland’s reported facilitation of rendition flights is disturbingSINN Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, Seán Crowe TD, has branded Ireland’s facilitation of secret CIA detention, rendition and interrogation programmes as disturbing.

Crowe made the comments after the release of a new report from the Open Society Justice Initiative, a human rights advocacy group, which states that Ireland was one of 54 states which helped facilitate the illegal actions of the CIA by permitting the use of its airspace and airports for flights associated with CIA extraordinary rendition operations.

The report took information from a variety of high-level sources including the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the UN, all which point towards co-operation with illegal CIA

rendition programmes. The report also cites documents from legal cases, brought by victims of rendition against some of the companies that aided the extraordinary rendition flights, which suggests that previous Governments allowed the use of Irish airspace and Shannon airport for these rendition flights.

Additionally the report references diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks which show that previous Governments knew that rendition flights were using Irish airspace and airports, but despite public criticism, they continued to ensure American military transits continued.

In response to concerns that Ireland was facilitating rendition flights, raised by the Irish Human Rights Commission in 2005, the Government stated that inspections of military

planes in Shannon were not necessary because it had received assurances from the American administration that detainees had not been and would not be transported illegally through Irish territory. This latest report would suggest that those assurances were either naïve or a bad lie.

In recent weeks the current Government has reiterated its support for the continued use of Shannon airport as a transit for foreign military flights.

Deputy Crowe said:“Sinn Féin stands against

the use of any Irish airport and Irish airspace being used by foreign militaries engaged in aggressive military action. Ireland must uphold its historical tradition of neutrality.

This disturbing report, on the use of Irish airports and airspace by US military aircraft since 9/11, needs

to be fully investigated. It highlights grave breaches of domestic and international law, and diminishes our standing as a neutral state.

Rendition flights breach domestic and international law, yet it seems the Government of the time did nothing to stop this state’s facilitation of rendition flights.

I am calling on the Government to make a public statement that it will refuse to participate in the CIA’s detention and rendition programme and disclose all information relating to past human rights violations.

I am also calling on the current Government to create an independent body to investigate the potential human rights abuses and to put safeguards in place to ensure that Irish airspace is not used for illegal rendition flights.”

Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes and is the twenty third film in the hugely popular James Bond franchise. Daniel Craig returns for a third time to play the world’s greatest secret agent, with Judi Dench returning as M. Skyfall centres on Bond investigating an attack on MI6 headquarters in London. Bond must then track down and destroy the threat. During his investigation he comes up against Raoul Silva, who is played by Javier Bardem. Bond’s loyalty to M is also tested along the way.

Daniel Craig is once again brilliant as a more modern day Bond. A lot more screen time is also given to Judi Dench which is excellent to see as she is such a talented actress. Bardem is also brilliant as the antagonist in this film. Critics around the world have claimed that Skyfall is the best Bond film yet. With Bond appearing to be a more experienced and more damaged hero. If you are a fan of James Bond you will certainly enjoy Skyfall, especially as it is respectful of tradition, more so than the last two films in the series (Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale). Two characters (Q and Eve Moneypenny) who have been absent in the last two films make an appearance in Skyfall.

The theme song to Skyfall was written and performed by the hugely successful Adele. The song “Skyfall” also won Best Original Song at this year’s Golden Globes award ceremony. Skyfall is available to rent or buy now and is rated 12.

The popularity of RTÉ’s The Voice of Ireland is increasing as a record 742,700 people tuned in to watch the programme which featured the first round of Battles. The Blind Auditions have already been aired on RTÉ One. During the Blind Auditions singers are judged on their vocal talent alone. The coaches have their backs to the singer, and if they like what they hear, they spin their chair around indicating that they would like to be their coach. This year’s coaches are Kian Egan, Bressie, Sharon Corr and Jamelia.

The Voice of Ireland airs every Sunday evening at 6:30pm on RTÉ One and it is certainly becoming great Sunday night viewing. One of the most vocal and opinionated coaches, Kian Egan is providing great entertainment as he ruffles a few feathers amongst the other coaches. The live shows begin on Sunday 17th of March, so if you haven’t watched any of The Voice so far, you have plenty of time to catch up on all of singers and of course the drama going on between the coaches.

Fifty-bed HSE nursing home lies idle

A 50 bed HSE community nursing home in Inchicore lies empty while patients wait. Sinn Féin’s Aengus Ó Snodaigh demands that this vacant nursing home is opened. The nursing home was built as part of the planned St. Michael’s Regeneration Project; the home was built two years ago and cost a whopping €12 million to build. The nursing home is fitted with state of the art facilities but has yet to be opened to the awaiting patients.

“I am demanding that Minister O’Reilly open the facility immediately, relieve the pressure on St James’ Hospital and live up to the commitment that half the beds in the new facility will be for local patients” Ó Snodaigh spoke out.

With the closure Brú Caoimhghín which had fifty beds and the St. Michael’s nursing home failing to open the pressure has fallen on the near by St. James hospital who now find it difficult to discharge elderly

patients due to the lack of nursing home beds in the vicinity. Minister O’Reilly must notice the need for a nursing home in the St. Michael’s area as the nursing home was built there due to the aging local community.

There is also financial sense to opening St. Michael’s Nursing Home it would relieve the pressure on St. James hospital, allowing them to place patients quicker preventing the patients from getting stuck on trolleys in

the A&E. Ó Snodaigh urges the Government to reject the proposal that the home will be run on a half public half private bases. Ó Snodaigh went on to say, “I call on the Minister to reject the proposal to run this hospital on a public-private partnership. The privatisation of the public health system needs to end. If the HSE cannot run the facility, why not grant it, with the required operating costs, to St James’s Hospital?”

MEDIA mogul Rupert Murdoch has said he is “considering” getting rid of the controversial Page 3 from The Sun newspaper, following an online campaign where a petition was signed by 65,000 people.

Murdoch made the

comment on Twitter after being bombarded with tweets from the No More Page 3 campaign, whose followers are appealing for the daily topless photos of young women to be removed from The Sun.

No More Page 3 is a campaigning group that is calling on the Sun editor

Dominic Mohan to “drop the bare breasts” from his newspaper.

Through twitter, the group are encouraging its followers to tweet Murdoch their thoughts on why Page 3, which they believe is offensive to women and not suitable for a family newspaper, should be removed.

Political blogger Guido Fawkes has launched his own campaign #SavePage3 in opposition to the #nomorepage3 campaign hoping it would help show support for the much loved daily format.

Murdoch struck up conversation with tweeters who claimed that Page 3 was so last

century, saying “Page 3 so last century? You may be right, don’t know but considering.” The No More Page 3 campaign said they were “really pleased that Rupert Murdoch might be think about dropping page 3 – It’s down to everyone who signed the petition and supported us”.

Ford Kuga: A Smarter

SUV• Class-leading driving ability• Innovation inside and out• Class-leading fuel economy• Engineered for outstanding safetyTHE all-new Ford Kuga, which arrives in Ireland this month, is set to shatter the myth that an SUV can’t be green, high-tech, capable and exceptional all at once.

The new Kuga is the centrepiece of Ford’s strategy to expand in the fast-growing European SUV market and offers a surprising array of features and technologies, including:

· Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, including exclusive Curve Control

· Segment first hands-free tailgate that operates with a gentle kicking motion

· Class-leading fuel efficiency· Ford SYNC with Emergency Assist. Ford plans to leverage its global leadership

in SUVs to deliver a comprehensive lineup of smarter vehicles to Europe. New Kuga will be followed by the modern and innovative EcoSport, Ford’s entry into the small SUV segment, and the Edge – a larger, more premium crossover that is a success in North America and other markets.

“Kuga has proved a popular vehicle with Irish motorists and indeed, right across Europe,” said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland. “The new Kuga retains the charisma of the previous model and adds remarkable new technologies, features and capability.”

The smart AWD system pre-emptively reassesses conditions 20 times faster than it takes to blink an eye, readjusting the AWD power split to give the driver the best blend of handling and traction.

The primary goal of the AWD system at low speeds is traction; at speeds above 30 km/h the AWD system is tuned to improve driving feel, handling and responses. A unique cluster display shows drivers the torque demand of each wheel at any moment.

Ford Curve Control acts as a safeguard for drivers who have entered a bend with too much speed. The system mitigates against severe understeer by aggressive braking and can, if the driver is still pushing their foot down on the accelerator, also reduce engine torque.

Stylish new Kuga offers space for more luggage than the current car and a luggage compartment that can be accessed more easily.

Ford’s hands-free tailgate can be opened or closed simply by a kicking motion beneath the rear bumper to either open or close the powered tailgate; and new Kuga offers 46-litres more luggage compartment-space than the current model, while the rear seats fold flat in one movement.

New Kuga will deliver class-leading fuel economy through significantly improved fuel efficiency. Diesel engine fuel consumption has been improved by 10 per cent. In Ireland, New Kuga is available with a 2.0-litre TDCi Duratorq diesel engine.

New Kuga was awarded a maximum five-star rating by Euro NCAP after achieving an overall protection score of 88 per cent, the highest-ever for a mid-sized SUV.

The independent vehicle safety organisation awarded new Kuga an Advanced reward for Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance. Upon detecting airbag deployment or activation of the emergency fuel shut-off within the car, Emergency Assistance uses the on-board GPS locator and Bluetooth-paired device to set up an emergency call and provide GPS co-ordinates, in the local language.

“This is the most technology we have ever offered with a Ford car in Europe” said Eddie Murphy. “This helps new Kuga become a better car right across the board – and delivers a smarter SUV”.

In Ireland Kuga will be offered in two series: Zetec and Titanium.

The specification list for Kuga Zetec is as follows: 17” 5x2 spoke alloy wheels; front fog lights; heated windshield; cruise control, daytime running lights; body colour mirrors, door handles and rear spoiler; twin exhausts; driver’s knee airbag; Thatcham alarm; fold flat rear seats; trip computer; and leather steering wheel with remote audio controls.

The additional specification for the Kuga Titanium includes: 17” 9x2 spoke alloy wheels; automatic headlights and wipers; front scuff plates; dual zone air conditioning; driver’s lumbar support; partial leather seats; Sony radio/CD; Ford SYNC connectivity; and premium centre console with sliding armrest.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14

The Masters HistoricEdition to Feature

FANS will be able to step back in time with Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14: The Masters Historic Edition. For the first time ever, users will experience Augusta National Golf Club as it was when the course played host to the very first Masters Tournament — what was known in 1934 as the Inaugural Augusta National Invitation Tournament.

The development of this exclusive feature was researched with meticulous detail in an effort to re-create the original 1931 design of world-renowned golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie and legendary golfer Bobby Jones.

“From the very beginning, our relationship with the Masters Tournament has been built around our ability to bring a unique and authentic experience to a new and younger demographic of potential golfers,” Mike

Taramykin, Vice President of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR said. “From unprecedented access to the Augusta National archives, to in-depth discussions with golf historians — and even our own internal research into the sport in the 1930s — The Masters Historic Edition is the next step in bringing gamers an exciting and distinctive glimpse into the game of golf.”

Game play will place players in a 1934 environment, which takes into account everything from the clothing to the equipment. On the golf course, users will discover a new way to enjoy the timeless layout, and as it would have played when the first Tournament field competed in the Club’s inaugural invitational. This includes everything from the golf course’s nines being reversed to its original green contours and speeds.

In addition to this unique feature, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14: The Masters Historic Edition will also include: • A complete copy of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14• A walk through of the original 1934 layout of Augusta National • The present-day Augusta National Golf Club course • Augusta National’s world-class Tournament Practice Facility • Augusta National’s Par 3 course • Green Jacket ceremony • Augusta, the Song, as heard during the Masters Tournament television broadcast

In total, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14: The Masters Historic Edition will include all 20 courses available in the standard edition and the four additional championship courses: Royal County Down, Royal Melbourne, Sheshan and TPC Blue Monster at Doral.

Feature: ITTFM Charity gig inaid of ARC CANCER Support

THE roof was firmly rocked off the Cuckoo’s Nest in Tallaght on Friday 8th February, where 6 bands took to the stage as part of a fundraising gig in aid of Arc cancer society.

The gig was organised by ITT 99.1fm.

Graham Lewis, one of the organisers, told Bizblitz that they chose Arc because “cancer affects most families in Ireland, and it’s a non-government funded charity”.

ARC is a haven, founded in 1994, offering professional

personal support to people affected by cancer and those who care for them. The support is holistic and complements primary medical treatment with education and psychological support and care. Services in ARC Houses are free of charge so donations are greatly appreciated.

Over 80 people came to the gig and showed their support for this worthy cause. Everyone had a fantastic night. And with the help of them and the acts Resoul, Cathal Flaherty, The Aluskas

(who donated all album sales on the night), Shane Ó Fearghail from Caruso, Madra and The Stoles more than €650 was raised for Arc.

ITT 99.1fm would like to thank the Cuckoo’s Nest and bands for giving their support and services free of charge.

If you would like to donate or even organise your own fundraising event you can contact Arc through their website at www.arccancersupport.ie.

Mill CentreJobs at Risk

WITH unemployment still a problem in Ireland you’d think that there would have been some sort of legislation put into place to protect longstanding businesses from being wiped out. But it would appear that this is not the case as longstanding businesses in the Mill Shopping Centre in Clondalkin struggle to pay their high rents while new tenants such as Specsavers and Boots are granted ‘Sweetheart’ deals. These deals put businesses like McNally’s Opticians in danger of having to cut valuable jobs.

Current tenants have pleaded with the agents to secure them a lower rent that better reflects the drop in sales since the economic downturn but so far their pleas have been rejected.

To make matters worse McNally’s Opticians is forced to compete with Specsavers who have been given an unfair advantage over them with their nine months rent free period and lower rent, they are in a better position to offer customers better deals which could spell disaster for the community businesses.

Unfortunately these days, business for all shops has taken a hit but for the tenants at the Mill Centre times are getting harder as the agents working on behalf of the owners seem only too glad to sell them out to bigger and more established businesses. Eoin Ó Broin speaks out “If this kind of practice continues jobs will be lost at the Mill Centre. Given Clondalkin’s already high level of unemployment every possible attempt must be made to prevent further job losses.”

Ó Broin has asked people to petition

the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton to clarify weather or not if these deals are legal. Ó Broin stated “I have written to the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation asking him to clarify if such deals are in breach of European competition law and if so asking him to take action to ensure that all traders at the Mill Centre are treated fairly.”

While current tenants at the Mill Centre continue to pay rents that were assigned during the boom, their sales still dropping and now their being

forced to compete with businesses that have been given an easy ride by the owners. Job losses seem inevitable at this stage and unfortunately for the people who will find themselves out of work because of these ridiculous ‘Sweetheart’ deals will find it quite difficult to find work and will more than likely end up signing on for jobseekers. It’s clear that it would only benefit the government to put into place some sort of measures to secure these people their jobs and keep them off the ever growing dole line.

S.E.OSearch Engine Optimisation is the science of in-creasing traffic to your website by discovering what potential clients are searching for. There is much advice to be found online as to the best way to approach this task but the simple fact re-mains that without the help of a professional company that has the in-depth knowledge, ex-perience and resources with which to implement a coordinated plan, it is very difficult to succeed.

Our SEO experts have an excellent track re-cord in consistently achieving top-ten rank-ings across all the major search engines, tar-geting the keywords and phrases, that people interested in the services our clients offer are most likely to use when searching online.

Mobile CompatibilityMobile web design is a concept that can now be used on Smart phones, tablets, and previewed on modern HTML5 compatible browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome, and even on in-compatible browsers, such as Internet Explorer 8. It means your web site will look good on all screen sizes, including tablets and smart phones.

If your website is not compatible with mobile phones, you are missing out, on a large per-centage of potential visitors. Mobile phone web searches are the largest growth area on the in-ternet.
