This competition was a double-elimination race; each race consisted of a 150 foot city block dash. Period five's team, which consisted of Aaron Bruns, Autumn Ellis, Macy Henkle, McKenna Johnson, Brooke May, Chance Mosier, Jaxson Bruns, Hannah Eichenauer, Kara Heck, Lauren Henderson, Conner Lyons, Haylee Stukey, and Loren Stukey, was awarded the bronze toilet seat along with a cash prize of $100 for their third runner-up finish. Once the money has been received, fifth period plans to enjoy a party of their choice. When Mrs. Profit saw the advertisement for the Outhouse Races, she felt that having her Geometry classes participate would be a great project that promoted S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) principles. Mrs. Profit plans to continue hands-on S.T.E.M. activities throughout the year with other projects as well. Parkway junior Conner Lyons stated “this project made Geometry so much more real; using math to actually build something made it interesting.”

Freshman English Essay of the MonthKelsey Nichols

Last month, we highlighted a student essay that required usingnon-fiction information to create a fiction story. This month,we are looking at an essay that had to be created using a listof ten words that are extremely complicated, odd, and rare. For each word provided, students had to use four types ofcontext clues to help readers understand what the word means. The types of clues used included definition/re-statement, usingexamples/synonyms, opposites/antonyms, and detaileddescriptions. Mrs. Rolfes chose Kelsey Nichols’ essay tohighlight this month because Kelsey was able to make herstory humorous, realistic, and easy to follow. This task wasdifficult and required a lot of thought, but Kelsey did a greatjob of keeping her story grounded and she met all of therequirements. Kelsey's context clues made sense and helpedexplain the words and their definitions.

Here is a sample from Kelsey's essay:"Usually Jonie wakes up by herself when shesmells breakfast cooking. Jonie ismacrosmatic, she can smell the breakfast fromall the way upstairs." (detailed description)
