Blast off to Base Ten Exploration!

Unit Summary
In first grade our students need the basics of base ten with place value, adding and subtracting. We wanted our children to experience where base ten would really be used in the real world as well has teaching them teamwork, problem solving creating a product and community service.
Unit Summary Continued• Add and subtract models using snack or Halloween candy• Relate to businesses students are familiar with (McDonald’s, etc.)• Discovery Education video – On the Assembly Line• Bean Factory Assembly Line Activity – Have students participate in
an assembly line to create 10 beans on a popsicle stick. Students will assume roles of different jobs and the bean sticks will be used for modeling and classroom activities.
• Operation Christmas Child boxes – assemble in small groups, then decorate and fill them
• Making models of addition and subtraction problems – use pictures and objects to create number sentences.
• Show a number in different ways• Calendar
Gauging Students Needs
We are planning a pretest which will assist us in seeing what are students already know about base ten, adding and subtracting.
Throughout the project we will be taking written notes and giving weekly tests in order to assist students with their learning and regroup students. It will also help us divide the students up when it comes time for the real world projects.

Finally we will grade the students on their projects using notes on each child.
We will also be giving a finally written assessment.
