Tree of Lights
The Butterfly Tree of Lights event, com-memorating loved ones that are no longer with us, is this Friday, December 9 at 6:30 pm at 5 valley locations: Frater Landing (Invermere), Edgewater Hall, Fairmont Lion’s Den, Canal Flats Village Office and Meet on Higher Ground in Radium. There will be music, gentle and loving words spoken and a lighting of the com-memorative trees in white lights. The trees shall remain lit throughout the holiday sea-son. Refreshments will be served following the event. Call 250-688-1143 for more in-formation.
Knocked Down
“I think I have a pretty good head on my shoulders,” said the egotist. “You do have a good point there,” I replied.
Filled with Laughter
Laughter is so good for you. It generates endorphins that improve your mood, mask pain and strengthen social bonds. It also improves brain deductive powers. This Saturday, December 10 brings ‘Yukyuks On Tour’ to the Horsethief Creek
Pub in Radium. Comedian Keith Sarnoski and emcee Dion Arnold will have your sides in stitches with their witty entertain-ment. They are both very funny. These comedy shows have been selling out at the Horsethief so get your tickets early. Tickets are $15 in advance or will be $18 at the door. It will be an incredible eve-ning and you leave full of laughter and thought. There will be a shuttle service available. Come on out and laugh yourself to a much happier week.

This time of year we start to hear a lot about the meaning of Christmas and Jesus Christ. That brings with it lots of negative comments about religion. Many folks will always strive to find the bad in everything. The thing to remember about the Bible and Christianity is that everything changes with the coming of Christ. It changes from obe-dience, fear, faith, violence and more to one central theme. Love. As with almost all religions, it is all about caring for people and loving them and do-ing what is right for others. Of course no one is ever perfect at anything so there is always lots of errors, questionable behav-ior and extremism. But the key to it all is having your heart in the right place. Whether you believe in Christ as the Son of God or not, he was a real person who did a lot of good things for the people he met. We can all learn just from that. Be good. Be kind. Be helpful. Be forgiving. Be hon-est. Be the person who changes the world by changing the days of everyone you meet. A simple little sentence can make a huge difference.
Tough Job
The shoe salesman was having a tough time with a very difficult lady customer. Finally he asked, “Do you mind if I take a short break? Your feet are killing me.”

Watson’s
Waddle
It is definitely a pretty hairy situa-tion. My summer coat is leaving me, hundreds of hairs at a time, while the winter coat grows in. Most dogs shed but I would say that I pretty much molt. I lose hair in clumps. The best part of all that is the extra atten-tion I get. Rob has some nice brushes around here and we hang out on the deck for some good rakings. We could fill a shopping bag with my hair nearly every single day. Another great part is the hair all over the house and the vehicles. It really makes me feel comfortable and familiar. I love the fact that any visitors take a little piece of me home with them. And Rob’s clothes. He has definitely given up on any effort of trying to keep his clothes free of dog hair and slobber. I think he wears it as more of a badge of pride now. Badges of pride. I am really looking forward to the coming spring when I can replace this winter coat. Shedding is so much more worthwhile when it is lots of good long, thick hair.
What Year Was It?
Drought in Canada produced the ‘Dust Bowls’, Amelia Earhart became the first female to sole across the Atlantic, Johnny Cash was born, Jack Benny debuted on the radio and the Zippo lighter and Mars Bars were invented? What year was it? See page 10.

Doctor, Doctor
“I have a problem,” says the patient. I keep humming ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home.” “It sounds like you have the Tom Jones syndrome,” says the doctor. “Is that common?” “It’s not unusual.”
The Thrifty Reporter
HoHoHo! There may not be much snow on the ground but just take a walk down Main Street to see the bustle of people and the cheer of Christmas decorations. Walk into a store to hear the Christmas music. Yes it is the season. Did you know that the Invermere Thrift Store is a great place to shop for many Christmas items! There is wrapping paper, ribbon and cards; linens and Christmas dishes; Christmas decorations and bells; plus much more. With such great prices this store definitely helps the Christmas budget stretch a little further. Special Notices: Store closed December 18 through to January 11, 2017. Donations not accepted December 23 to January 2, 2017.
Cheers to the Arts
The Station Pub promotion to raise money for the audio-visual and other arts compo-nents of the new multi-use community hall is still happening. So far 3,596 pints and 194 jugs have been purchased ($1/pint and $3/jug are being donated to the hall) for a total of $4,178 to be contributed. Rockies Hockey
The Rockies will be back in town to host the Creston Valley Thunder Cats on Tues-day, December 13. Game time is 7:30 pm. Creston is in first overall in the KIJHL and are slated to host the Cyclone Taylor Cup, the Western Canadian Junior B Champion-ship tournament. The Rockies are fourth in their division and will likely face Creston in the first round of the playoffs. They have played some good hockey against Creston so this will be a good game to attend. Come out and have some fun watching good, hard-working, live junior hockey right here in our community.

Week or Two Off
The Valley Peak runs every week through-out the year except for one or two around Christmas and New Year. It is a pretty steady adventure and I really appreciate all the folks who help me out. This year I will do an issue the week be-fore Christmas and probably just take a single week off, starting back up again the first week of January. Make sure you get your New Year’s Eve info to me well be-fore Christmas. I think I will try to take a week off for fishing in early May as my other week of holidays this year. This small business owner-operator stuff is pretty demanding.

Happy Trails
Happy trails are safe travels home through the holiday season. If you are planning on partying, please preplan a safe, sober trip home. Blazin’ Trailz Shuttle Service can take care of groups of any size, throughout the Co-lumbia Valley. Give them a call at 250-341-8970.
Riddliculous Answer
(From page 2) No time at all. The field is already dug up. Sorry. Lol.
Christmas Candlelight Service
You are invited to celebrate ‘Love’s Pure Light’ at the Christmas Candlelight Service at the historic Brisco Church on Sunday, December 18 at 7 pm. The service will be led by special guests Pastor Murray and Cheryl Wittke. Bring a holiday treat to share. Everyone is invited to attend.
Forget It
The couple was nearing the airport at the start of their ‘off the grid’ holiday. “I sure wish I brought my laptop,” says the husband. “Why is that, honey?” “Because our plane tickets are on top of it.”
Be Careful Out There
With the colder weather, the roads defi-nitely become pretty slippery. Every year I get that same reminder to change my driv-ing habits; the corner right by my house is pure ice. It is funny how we almost forget about win-ter driving. And then it hits us. Anyway, please leave a bit earlier and take your time travelling. Expect winter conditions and it is up to you to get there safely.
Quick Rant
Last Friday was National Food Bank Day and CBC Radio did a huge fundraiser with lots of guests talking about how busy their local food banks are. The Columbia Valley is no different. A lot of folks were offering up potential solutions to the growing need. The com-mon thread was the fact that executives from B.C. Hydro, Ferries, and other Gov-ernment agencies, make salaries in the millions while the people they ‘serve’ be-come poorer. The millions that would be saved by eliminating just a few top titles would feed a lot of people for a long time.

SNOW REMOVAL
District of Invermere’s Traffic Bylaw requires all
property owners to remove snow, ice or rubbish from the
sidewalk and footpaths on a road right of way adjacent to
the property within 24 hours of the accumulation.
To be a Good Neighbour,
Here’s How You Can Help:
Clear snow and ice from sidewalks as soon as
possible after a snowfall to ensure that they are
safe for all residents. Lend a hand to those who
may not be physically able to shovel.
Do not park on the street during a snowstorm or while
snow clearing operations are underway.
Parked cars can make plowing difficult.
Keep children safe - don’t let them play in snow piles, or
build snow forts in the snow banks at the side of the road.
Snow plows have no place to push the snow except to the
curb or shoulder of the road. Sometimes this happens just
after you have finished shoveling. We appreciate this can
be frustrating; however, we ask your cooperation in
clearing this snow without placing it on the roadway.
If you hire a private contractor to clear your
driveway, make sure the contractor does not push
snow into the traveled portion of the roadway,
or fill in sidewalks.
Pile snow on the right side of your driveway
(when facing the road).
Remove snow from around fire hydrants on or near
your property to enable quick access by emergency
personnel if the need arises.
Do not place your garbage cans on top of snow banks.
If possible place them on your driveway near the
edge of the road.
The District thanks you for your co-operation!

Christmas Bureau
It is going to be a very busy season for the Christmas Bureau. If you are able and willing to contribute in any way, please do so. You can make a huge difference. Email [email protected].
Shop Locally
I know that it is a drum that I beat regularly but Please Shop Local. I do realize that we can save some money by going elsewhere sometimes but that can be a bit short-sighted. That money is pretty much gone from the valley. Most money spent in a small business here will end up being spent at another business, and another business, and so on. It drives our local economy and sup-ports the businesses that support all the fundraisers and initiatives in our area.
The Year It Was
(From page 4) In 1932, the Dow Jones reached its lowest ever, the parking meter was invented, houses cost $6,510, annual income averaged at $1,650, a car cost $610, bread was 7¢/loaf, gas was 10¢/gallon and Canadian unemployment reached 27%
Fed the Town
A huge thank you to Copper Point Golf Course and all their partners and sponsors for the ‘Feed the Town’ event last Sunday. As always, the turkey and ham dinner was fantastic and lots of cash and food were raised for the Food Bank. A special shout out to Peter and The Bak-ery for the use of their huge oven to get all the turkeys done. Also great work by the organizers, the volunteers and the staff. All your efforts are much appreciated.
Old One
Why don’t dinosaurs drive? Because whenever he gets in a vehicle, the tyrannosaurus rex.

Good Book Buy
I made it to the ‘Twas the Book Sale Be-fore Christmas’ event at the Legion last weekend. I am constantly on the lookout for reference, riddle and joke books for The Valley Peak. I got lucky. I found a great kids’ joke book that actually had lots of funny stuff. So be prepared for some cheesy but entertaining jokes in the next few issues.
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 shows Watson and myself visiting with Santa. He has been in and out of the valley a bit lately. This was at Hopkin’s Harvest last Saturday.
Sweet Voices
The Valley Voices performances last week-end were incredible. Attendees scrambled to secure seats both evenings. The song choices and singing were magnificent and the kids’ choir from Eileen Madson did a wonderful job. Watch for a spring performance from the Valley Voices. Music and singing are good for the soul.
Clubs Cancelled
With the Christmas holidays happening, make sure you check with organizers re-garding weekly or monthly events. Some groups take a break during this time. An example would be ‘Soup and a Bun’ in Edgewater. There will be no luncheon in December but they will be back in January.
Really?
Daisy the cow and Dolly the sheep were in the pasture. “I’m pregnant,” says Daisy. “I was artifi-cially fertilized.” “I don’t believe you,” says Dolly. “It’s true. No bull!”
Distracted Walking
Some of the cities in Canada are having a huge issue with pedestrians stepping into traffic while on their cell phones. The num-ber of accidents, including several fatali-ties, has increased by more than 40%. Toronto has 7 incidents every day. They are considering legislation to ban the use of any technology while crossing the street. Interestingly, more than half of all dis-tracted walking injuries happen in the home. Keep your heads up folks.
Great Story
’Tis the season when the message at Church becomes mostly the Christmas Story. If you want to hear some good news find some joy, stop in at the Lake Winder-mere Alliance Church (right behind Sobeys) on any Sunday morning at 10:30 am. Everyone is welcome.
Sweetly Spoiled
I am very lucky in so many ways. One is the fresh apple juice that I get from my sister, Darlene and her hubby, Jimmy. They have the apples left in their orchard pressed at the end of the season. Pure apple juice. Nice. I am looking forward to seeing them this Christmas. Mom will be in the Okanagan so it will be a good chance to see most of the family. It has been a few years since I went there for Christmas.
Long Term Care
‘My mom’s been in this hospital for nearly three years,” said William. “Wow,” she must be really sick.” “No, she is a doctor.”
