The significance of this cluster-design non-inferiority trial is its potential to inform service delivery programs on clinical outcomes, program feasibility, cost, and acceptability of two different community models of PPH care using misoprostol.

On March 3rd 2014 the target of 3000 delivery-enrolments was achieved. Data analysis is in progress and to be disseminated in the month of September.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT Facilities)Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has impacted on every sphere of

library activity especially in the form of the library collection development strategies, library infrastructure and consortia.

ICT presents an opportunity to provide value-added information services and access to a wide variety of digital based information resources to their clients.

The Central Library established air conditioned digital library with the following ICT facilities:

• 40 work stations in the mezzanine section (left wing).• 20 MBPS lease line Internet Connection • Wi-Fi • Video conferencing • Institutional repository

Video Conferencing SolutionVideo conferencing is two-way interactive communication delivered using telephone or Internet

technologies that allows people at different location to come together for a meeting. The video conference can be as simple as a conversation between two people in private offices (point-to-point) or involve several sites (multi-point) with more than one person in large rooms at different sites.

Student writes… The Lighter Side of My experience as a ‘Surgery PG’

Welcomed by the vast dry fields, the dusty evening wind and the dirty yet cute families of pigs and pigletsI arrived at Bijapur almost two years ago. Speaking from my heart I should place on record that I was quite skeptical about my life that was going to be for the next three years. If you have met me, you will surely understand my love for saturated fatty urban fast food, and here I was in a town bereft of pizza huts, dominoes and star buck coffee days. What was I to do? “What would my day be like, I wondered, what would my future be, I wondered!!!” (Maria – The Sound of Music)

However it did not take too long to settle, a large campus with a good and clean hostel, a roommate who had a fridge and a printer, a sneak door into

the hospital right opposite the PG hostel (which is closed at present), a well-structured department, friendly seniors and fellow postgraduates and more importantly the people and patients I met all and ensured that I blended well.

As the days passed by, the coffee days and caffepasscuci’s got replaced with a huge spectrum of dhabhas ranging from the mild pure vegetarian Rajasthan dhabha to the occasionally life threatening Delhi bellies caused by the famous baapi dhabha. (There was lots of studying too, the above statement almost looks like the definition of acute pancreatitis!!!!!)My dreams of losing weight were nowhere near fulfillment. Though I shed a few kilos initially, the elaborate multi cuisine post ward dressing breakfasts or post OT lunches in the doctors room with the ward sisters and brothers made sure that my mother’s well nourishing efforts did not go to vain. The ‘shenga’ holiges and the ‘sajjekadubus’ did all the magic.

The best part of this journey was my tryst with the patients. They brought smile on my face and I hoped that I would make them smile too. Coming from a different talkative background with a slightly different language, I graduated from greeting my patients with “have you had an itch today “[ to“have you had breakfast today ]“. ‘thindi’ for the south kannadiga is breakfast, Little did I know that it meant ‘ to itch’ in Bijapuri Kannada! and to add to this confusion a friend of mine almost convinced me that it meant ‘ perianal itch’ what could be worse for a lady with a concussion head injury than to have her doctor ask her if she had a perianal itch every morning!!!!!!!! She would often smile at us and I recollect someone having mentioned on her case sheet “ patient is smiling”. Our patients laughed heartily when every surgeon in the unit, right from the chief of the unit to the little intern was so concerned if they had moved their bowels and farted well. “ sandaaz” at the right time and the right place and from the right patient brings immense joy to the surgeon and the team much to the amusement of the patient himself. Immaterial of how much I got scolded in class or rounds, talking to the patients and understanding their suffering made everything else seem far too insignificant. Their innocence, simplicity, poverty, self-esteem. The list is endless, each aspect teaching us lessons of life. I have had patients hold my hand and touch their eyes if I was doing a dressing on their feet, patients offering sweets after they recovered, patient relatives falling at our feet hoping we could miraculously cure their diseased. Patients who thought that insertion of the Ryle’s tube and Foleys catheter itself was the operation. Patients who exchanged ‘banni leaves’ during dasara with blessings that it turns to gold (bangara). Patients who would recognize my voice on the OT table even with their eyes closed. These anecdotes are endless and will always remain the best part of my journey as a surgery PG. More gossip in my next writing. I declare no conflict of interest. Dr Bharat S.
