Morning Keynote

Reach Every Student in Every Class, Every Day: The Flipped Classroom

Implementing the flipped class provides teachers with more face-to-face time with students, allows for true differentiation, compels students to take responsibility for their own learning, and enables students to master rigorous course concepts. Join flipped classroom pioneer Jon Bergmann as he walks through his transformation from a twenty year lecturer to a flipped class pioneer. Jon will demonstrate how the flipped class can transform today’s educational climate and increase student learning outcomes.

Session 1

Effective Teaching with a Digital Curriculum

Using a digital curriculum for primary instruction rather than delivering direct instruction to the whole group changes the role of the teacher and the structure of lesson plans. Because students engage with course material directly, teachers have time to facilitate and individualize instruction, to utilize reporting tools to identify areas of student weakness, and to develop instructional interventions including small group and individual direct instruction. This session describes the changing role of the teacher and prepares educators with strategies for teaching in a blended learning classroom. Participants will receive sample lesson plans, a National Standards for Quality Online Teaching Self-Assessment Rubric, and an Apex Learning Teacher Competencies Rubric.

Moving from Intervention to Prevention

In this session, we will look at best practices for recovering credits for students that have fallen behind and strategies for preventing student failure in the first place. Antelope Valley has moved the focus from intervening with students that failed to preventing their failure with just-in-time remediation. Students are given tools for unit and content recovery, so that teachers can intervene the same day that a student begins to struggle. This is the chance for our teachers to deliver differentiated instruction, using data on a real-time basis. This model has had a profound positive impact on our student outcomes.

Session 2

Ensure NCAA Eligibility and Academic Integrity

Blended learning enables new classroom models that offer a higher degree of individualization to meet the needs of each student. Districts serving student-athletes who wish to attend an NCAA Division I or II college or university must ensure non-traditional courses for original credit and credit recovery meet NCAA guidelines. In this session, participants will discuss NCAA eligibility requirements, Apex Learning NCAA Best Practices, and the NCAA non-traditional coursework questionnaire. Participants will also discuss strategies and best practices for maintaining academic integrity in digital curriculum programs.

Flipped-Mastery Classroom In a flipped-mastery classroom, students work at a flexible pace and are expected to master key learning objectives. This innovative model creates an individualized learning experience for each student within the traditional classroom setting. While this instructional model may seem daunting at first, there are many tips and tricks Jon Bergmann has learned over the years to make flipping your classroom possible. Jon will share the key components of the flipped-mastery classroom and how to move towards a student-centric mastery classroom.

Session 3

Enhance Classroom Instruction with Tutorials Whether the goal is to enhance instruction, provide targeted intervention, or ensure that every student meets the expectations of the Common Core State Standards, Apex Learning Tutorials allow teachers to address a range of student academic needs. Learn how Tutorials provide an innovative structure — Learn It, Try It, Review It, Test It — to build knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and deepen understanding.

Blending Learning for Academic SuccessWorking with students, parents and teachers to provide the best academic experience that leads to a depth of understanding content, Temecula Advantage Virtual School provides students with constant communication and support via an open lab concept.
