Sunday, October 6, 2019 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reconciliation: Wednesday – 11:30 a.m.-Noon Saturday – 10:30-11:30 a.m.

If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will be able to tell the mulberry bush to be uprooted and be planted in the sea, and it will oblige. I have to be honest, every time I hear this quote from the Gospel of Luke, my scientific background says, “No, it can’t.” In general, we are very pessimistic. If an idea or a concept doesn’t fit my world view, I write

it off as not being doable. But with this example of the mulberry bush, we have vegetation growing under the sea. In other words, faith has no limits. As long as we continue to live in faith, building the Reign of God becomes a natural event. But this growth is not instantaneous. It takes time and a whole lot of work. If all we work for is maintaining the status quo, then all we’ll end up with is the same thing that we already have. Christ is calling us to take a step further, to be like a servant who takes the initiative and imagination of God’s word and puts it into action. So if we want the Reign of God to become manifest in our Church, in our relationships, and in ourselves, we must take steps and go further by our actions of forgiveness, generosity, and possibility.
