Thoughts from Father Bob,
THE MIDDLE OF THE BRIDGE: The days of Advent are spread out like a bridge span taking us from a previ-ous year into a new time. With the Fourth Sunday of Advent we have neared the end of our preparation and are pointed toward our particular goal. We have re-hearsed the promises of the Old Testament and are awaiting news of their fulfillment the birth of a savior. Like a good mother the Church knows how difficult waiting can be and so we celebrate this time with a spe-cial interval along the way. We are invited to rejoice, our savior is near. Liturgically we go from the somber purples and violets to a more cheerful pink or rose color and back to purple. Our senses are teased with anticipa-tion that the Lord is near. This year as we labor under the covid-19 crisis it may be more difficult to anticipate a time of joy. We cannot move about freely and carry on the hustle and bustle so prevalent in these weeks and days before Christmas. So much of what we could do openly has to be restrained and we spend our days in solitude and prayer. So much like our Blessed Mother who contemplated the birth of her son in the quest recesses of Nazareth biding her time before making the journey to Bethlehem we look for opportunities to rejoice. No doubt there were many things to prepare for her journey. As always, God pro-vides his angels to assist us along the way. We trust that in these days of danger God will send the angels in charge of health to watch over and protect you from harm and guide you to the celebration of His coming at Christmas. May the days ahead continue to build the excitement and the anticipation. May our prayers and good deeds lead us to a joyful celebration that the Lord is near. In spite of the bleakness of our time we echo the refrain, “Rejoice, again I say rejoice, the Lord is near!”

Every year at this time, I enjoy watching the beloved movie: “Miracle on 34th Street.” not only because is conjures up memories of
how much the joy and celebration of Christmas has changed but also because it reminds me that some of the ways people think about the Christmas season really nev-er change. The three lines that stick with me are: from the following characters in the movie: Fred Gailey: Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to. Don't you see? It's not just Kris that's on trial, it's everything he stands for. It's kindness and joy and love and all the other intangibles. Bryan Bedford: Your Honor, a lot of people believe in Mr. Kringle. Includ-ing millions of children. If you rule against him, you won't destroy anyone's belief but you will destroy the man they believe in. Mr. Kringle is not concerned for himself, if he was he wouldn't be here. He is in this regrettable position because he is willing to sacrifice himself for children. To create in their minds a world far better than the one we've made for them. If this is, as Mr. Collins suggests, a masquer-ade then Mr. Kringle is eager to forfeit his freedom to pre-serve that masquerade. To subject himself to prosecution to protect the children's right to believe. If this court finds that Mr. Kringle is not who he says he is, that there is no Santa, I ask the court to judge which is worse: A lie that draws a smile or a truth that draws a tear. Kris Kringle: Oh, but there is. I'm not just a whimsical figure who wears a charming suit and affects a jolly demeanor. You know, I I'm a symbol. I'm a symbol of the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the ma-jor part of our lives. If you can't believe, if you can't accept anything on faith, then you're doomed for a life dominated by doubt. As I find myself a priest and pastor in the midst of Christmas during a pandemic crisis, having to cancel masses and celebrations and setting tight restrictions in our buildings, I find myself somewhat saddened that I will not be able to see so many of you this Christmas and know that many of you will not be able to spend time with family and friends. One evening as I was standing at the Christmas window at St. Alberts, a young boy arrives with his mother. Looking into the window he asked me Why Santa was not there. I simply smiled and replied,” this window is a story about the baby Jesus and the ani-mals like the little squirrel giving Him their gifts. The lit-tle boy looked at me and said: but doesn't Santa help Jesus deliver presents to people? I admit I couldn't respond and quickly making sure I said the right thing as his mother gave me the “warning eye.” Of course, I told him he was right and that Jesus uses Santa to help bring His love to others with the presents he delivers and that is why it is so important to thank Jesus for everything we get from Santa at Christmas. This year is difficult for so many and So many are on the verge of losing hope. But we can all learn from the simplicity of a child's faith, hope. I have witnessed so
many parishioners acting as Santa’s to one another this year and it continues to warm my heart, encourage my hope and strengthen my faith. The greatest gift this parish family has shared with me this year is the gift of witness-ing your love for the Lord by the way you love one anoth-er. Thank You and God Bless You!
I was asked by a parishioner of a former parish to share
this wonderful poem with you. If you have young children or grandchildren, and you speak with them over the phone or online, consider sharing this with them this Christmas.
"Daddy", the child said, her eyes full of tears,
"Will you talk to me and quiet my fears? Those bad boys at school are spreading a lie And saying that reindeer can't possibly fly!"
"There's no Santa Claus, they say with a grin, There's not one now and there never has been!
How can one man take all of those toys To thousands and thousands of good girls and boys?"
"But I told them, Daddy, that they were not right, And that I would come home and find out tonight.
Mama said wait until you come home, So please tell me now that I was not wrong."
Her Daddy looked at her questioning face And puffed his pipe while his frantic mind raced.
He had put this off as long as he could, He had to think fast and it better be good!
Whispering a prayer, he began with a smile, "Well climb on my lap, dear, let's talk a while. "Remember at church how we learned to pray,
Asking God to take care of us every day?" "And you know how we say Grace before each meal,
To this same God whom we know to be real? Though we never see Him, we know He is there Watching His children with such loving care."
"God started Christmas a long time ago When He gave us His Son to love and to know.
A spirit of giving came with that birth, And God's generosity filled the whole earth."
"Man had to name this spirit of giving Just as he names all things that are living.
The name Santa Claus came to someone's mind, As good a name as any to find."
"There is, you can see, and I think it's quite clear, Truly a Santa who visits each year.
A spirit, like God, whom we never see, He enters the hearts of your mother and me." "Each year at Christmas for one special night, We become him and make everything right.
But the real spirit of Christmas is in you and in me, And I hope you are old enough now to see That as we believe and continue to give,
Our friend Santa Claus will continue to live!" ~ Author Unknown

We arrive this week at another Christmas. As you think of Christmas or read the Christmas story this year take care not to clean it up too much. We often move Christmas into today’s world and sanitize it far too much. If we imag-
ine Jesus was born in a freshly swept County Fair stable, we miss the whole point. It was wretched; it was filthy. There was sweat and pain. The cries of Mary reached to the stars for help. The earth was hard and cold. The smell of the birth was mixed with the wretched smells of the animals and acrid straw. The trembling hands of a carpenter, shaking in fear, grasped God’s Son, slippery and wet—the baby’s limbs waiving helplessly as if falling through space—his face grimacing as he grasped the cold air, and his cry pierced the night. It was truly a leap down—as if the Son of God rose from his splendor, standing on the rim of the uni-verse, and dove headlong, speeding through the stars, over the Milky Way, to earth. There he plunged into a huddle of animals. Nothing could be lower. Joseph wiped him clean, as best he could by the firelight. Mary wrapped him in swaddling clothes. She counted each of his little fingers and gently laid him in a feeding trough. The Son of God was born into the world, not as a prince but as a pauper. We must never forget this is where Christianity began. It began with a sense of need. A true sense of grace. Christ comes to the needy. He comes to bring Good News and great joy to all the people. Merry Christmas.

Hope for a New Year! As 2020 begins to wrap up, what are some of the things that come to mind when reviewing the past 12 months? For most of us we would mention the affects the pandem-ic has had on our lives or how life has changed over the past several months due to restrictions and social distanc-ing guidelines. Some of us may mention some of the things they were able to start due to the quarantine or even a major milestone in their life. For me, I think of hope. Hope for many different reasons. Hope that life may begin to look better for my friends and family, hope that society begins to work together to spread love to one another, hope that things I have prayed for come to be, but most importantly hope that I may share Jesus with everyone I meet in this New Year. I pray that I may be open to God’s will in the new year, and I pray the same for all of you too. Merry Christmas and have a Happy and Blessed New Year!

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that You are Present in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things and I desire You in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. As though You were already there, I em-
brace You and unite myself wholly to You; permit not that I should ever
be separated from You. Amen.
