My dear parishioners, During the summer, I have had an oppor-tunity to see a few movies and I watched some other programming. In a few instances, I found myself offended not just by the use of foul lan-guage, but use of blasphemous language. In one movie I saw recently, a character described some-thing while making a derogatory comment about the Blessed Virgin Mary. I usually do not call out during a movie, but in this instance, I said loudly “That was really not necessary.” I was reminded why I prefer not to watch television and some other forms of media. The constant calling out of the name of Jesus, not in prayer or praise, but as a curse continues to both-er me. We have lost the sense of the sacred in many ways. During the conferences that I attend-ed this summer, one of the aspects of our faith that I was reminded of is the Holy Name. God’s name is meant to kept sacred, it is the Second Commandment. For the Israelites, the name of God was so sacred, they never spoke it nor did they write it down, but used different words to describe God. After the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon and the Temple was recon-structed, the name of God was only spoken once a year by the high priest on Yom Kippur. When he did so, the entire people would prostrate them-selves on the ground upon hearing the Holy Name. I ask that we make a concerted effort not to abuse the Holy Name. When we say “God” or “Jesus” let us only do so when we speaking lov-ingly of him or in prayer. Another old tradition to honor the Holy Name of Jesus is to bow our heads each time we hear the name of Jesus spoken. This comes from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians 2:10 “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” Another way to help one another is to re-mind our brothers and sisters of the sacredness of God’s name. El decir el nombre de Jesús constantemente, no en oración o alabanza, pero con carácter profano continua molestándome. Hemos perdido el sentido de lo sagrado en muchas formas. Durante las confe-rencias a las que asistí este verano, uno de los aspec-tos de nuestra fe que se me recordó fue el Santo Nombre. El nombre de Dios debe mantenerse sagra-do, es el Segundo Mandamiento.
