but this year is celebrated on Monday, January 9th. So, it ap-
pears that as Advent was a little longer with four full weeks,
the Christmas season is a bit shorter with this feast moved up
a bit. At any rate, what we celebrate, that our God is with us,
Emmanuel, is not a seasonal thing, but it is the essence of
who we are because of our own Baptism. So, keep the spirit
of Emmanuel alive in your hearts and in your homes, and live
always as a holy family of God where Jesus dwells, grows
stronger, and is shared generously with all others.
Beginning next Sunday we will resume our regular schedule
for Eucharistic Adoration. On Friday mornings we have ado-
ration after the 7 am Mass concluding with the Chaplet for
Divine Mercy and Benediction at 10:30 am. On Sunday eve-
nings we have adoration following the 5 pm Mass and con-
cluding with Night Prayer and Benediction at 7:45 pm. These
are wonderful opportunities to deepen your awareness of
Christ’s presence among us and to offer thanks and praise to a
God who is always with us. Spending time with the Lord can
make such a huge difference in your life. Come when you can
and for as long or little time as you can. The Lord is waiting.
To be honest, we will be taking a look at whether our people
are taking advantage of these times to evaluate whether we
should continue this. I hope you will give us reason to contin-
ue this great payer opportunity by making adoration a part of
your prayer life. It is all a matter of planning and priority.
Throughout this new year there will be many opportunities
for spiritual growth that we offer as a parish. To name just a
few coming up in the next few months, I want you to be
aware of a few series that I believe will be very worthwhile.
One is on four Monday evenings beginning January 23rd, enti-
tled Catholicism in our Culture, utilizing the work of some of
the most famous songwriters of our time. During Lent we will
have a special Retreat Day on March 18th to help us Walk
with Mary in Faith. There will be another four week Mon-
day evening series in Lent beginning on March 6th focused on
Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John. And of course
throughout the entire Lent we will be deepening our prayer
life with Pray40Days that Fr. Michael will guide us through,
but that we will be doing each day on our own. When we
wonder what 2017 will be like spiritually, all I can say is that
it depends so much on the choices each of us make to grow in
holiness.
Get this new year off to a great start. By all means read and
put into practice Mattherw Kelly’s Resisting Happiness, and
be a person of joy for others. May the Lord bless you and guide you in the ways of peace.
In God’s love,
HAPPY 2017!!! I pray that this new year will be filled
with peace and happiness, growth in faith and holiness, and
opportunities that bring about a deeper experience of the
goodness and love of our God. Literally God only knows what
lies ahead in this calendar year, so allow God to take control
of your life and continue to guide you on the course God has
chosen for you. I pray that all the surprises and times of un-
known be very pleasant and positive, and that whatever chal-
lenges may come, and they will undoubtedly arise, that they
will bring you to a deeper trust and dependence on God and
may ultimately be a source of great blessing. New beginnings
are always great opportunities to start fresh with renewed
intentions and goals that can lead you to a more meaningful
and productive life. I encourage you to set goals for yourself
that are small, practical, attainable, and accountable, and that
ultimately lead you to live more fully the meaning of Being
CHRIST ~ Every Day ~ Everywhere.
It is no accident that the Church has chosen to have us begin
this new year by celebrating the feast of the Solemnity of
Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In the Gospel this week-
end we find Mary at the manger “reflecting in her heart about
all that was happening”. No doubt, as wonderful as it was to
give birth to Jesus, there was so much that needed great prayer
and reflection to process and to find meaning. Nothing in our
lives could ever come near to the magnitude of what Mary
experienced, but all of us have times in our lives when life
gets complicated, challenging and difficult to understand. We
need to reflect and ponder, much like Mary did. God’s plan
and actions are almost always best viewed through the lens of
the rear view mirror. I fear that our lives are often so busy,
that there may not be much time just to be still and reflect. Not
only would that be unfortunate, but it could be dangerous.
Without reflection we run the risk of making hasty and ill
thought out decisions or reactions that could lead us off track.
Let Mary be a source of inspiration and example of what it
means to let God be in control, and to genuinely live the
words, “Let it be done unto me according to your Word”.
Because New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year some of
the traditional post-Christmas Sunday feasts are celebrated on
weekdays. For instance, the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary and Joseph, usually the Sunday between Christmas
and New Year, was celebrated this past Friday, December
30th. Whether you were aware of this or not, my hope is that
all you do throughout this Christmas season will continue to
strengthen the bonds of love and unity in your family, and that
Christ will be the center of your own holy family. Next Sun-
day, January 8th, we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany of the
Lord. Jesus came to “Be the Light” for all peoples, and
calls us to share that same light with everyone, especially with
those who may feel excluded for any reason. As the Magi
brought gifts to the newborn Savior, may we bring gifts of love, service and faithfulness. The Christmas season officially
concludes with the celebration of the feast of the Baptism of
the Lord, usually celebrated the Sunday after Epiphany,

Confirmation Candidates: The holiday season is a very special time when many family and friends gather to cel-ebrate and share the magic of the season. Be sure to take some time over the holidays
to consider choosing your sponsor. All sponsors need to obtain a Sponsor Certificate from their parish, so if you are choosing a sponsor who is usually away at college or someone you will see over the holi-days, now is the time to ask! Sponsor certificates can be turned in at the parish office.
Sponsors must be 16 years of age, have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and if married, they need to have been married in the Catholic Church.
Our next Confirmation session takes place on Sunday,
January 8th . All Sponsor Certificates are due at this meeting along with any outstanding paperwork and fees. We will begin with 5 PM Mass and head over to the MPR for our session from 6-7:45 PM. Liturgy Corner
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary. Many older parishioners may remember this day as celebrating the Octave of Christmas or the Circum-cision of the Lord. The Second Vatican Council stated: "Clearly from earliest times the Blessed Virgin is honoured under the title of Mother of God." At an early stage the Church in Rome celebrated on 1 January a feast that it called the anniversary (Natale) of the Mother of God (Calendarium Romanum, p. 84). This celebration became overshadowed by the feasts of the Annunciation
and the Assumption which were adopted from Constantinople in the 7th Century. As a result, January 1 was simply celebrated as the Octave, or Eighth Day of Christmas, at which time Jesus was circumcised and given his name ac-cording to Jewish tradition, and remained this way for hundreds of years. Vatican II restored January 1 to its origins, by proclaiming that beginning with the 1969 liturgical year, we again celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. In his Apostolic Letter, Marialis Cultus, Pope Paul VI explained: "This celebration, placed on January 1 ...is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salvation. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the "holy Mother...through whom we were found worthy to receive the Author of life." It is likewise a fitting occasion for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels (cf. Lk. 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace." Happy New Year!

St. Gabriel Conference
2016 Report to Parishioners “Whatsoever you did to the least of My brothers and sisters, you did it to Me.” (Matt:26:45)
Our 2016 Activity Report
During the past year (October 2015 through September 2016), our SVdP volunteers fielded hundreds of calls for assistance. We made 251 personal visits and 69 other contacts, which provided help to 568 people.
All of the contributions made by St. Gabriel parishioners were used to help the needy in our area. Our operating expenses were less than 1 % to cover postage, office supplies, and other items.
Our volunteers devoted almost 4,500 hours of service and traveled more than 5,200 miles in service to the needy in 2016.
In addition to the above, our conference conducted a School Supply drive, a Blanket Sunday collection, and the annual Share–A–Christmas campaign. The School Supply drive, in cooperation with many other area churches and businesses, provided supplies to over 2000 needy children. The Blanket Sunday collection, in conjunction with St. Mary’s (Painesville), provided
blankets and bedding to almost 200 people. Share-A-Christmas helped approximately 150 families (700 individuals) in our area.
We can only help when we have the means to do so. Your contributions help us help others. Without a generous be-quest from a non-parishioner, we would have run out of funds and had to turn away almost 76 families we helped this year. Remember, as Jesus said, “what you did for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me”.
Thank you for all your support.
How do we help?
Money entrusted to us is used to help the needy with rent, utilities, food, medicine and other essentials. We coordi-nate with other agencies to assist our clients with these and additional needs such as clothing or furniture. We work closely with our Food Pantry, the Lake/Geauga Furniture Bank, and other parish ministries.
We respond to most requests for help by conducting a home visit by two of our volunteers. Discussions are always confidential, and include an overview of needs, current financial situation and sources of help.
Typical people served in 2016 include families facing eviction or utility disconnection; homeless; parents who have lost their jobs; single mothers struggling to make ends meet; and victims of domestic violence.
Our thanks to YOU!
Through your generous contributions, YOU make possible the charitable works of the Society and share in the bless-ings of doing Christ’s work. “Being Christ • Every Day • Everywhere.”
May God bless YOU for your continued generosity. YOU help us to help others.

Music Notes …
On this Feast of the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God we call to mind Mary's role in sal-vation history. She was open to God's plan; she trusted. On this octave of Christmas as we continue to recall Jesus' coming into the world, we also keep in mind his return in glory. "O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie." From "O Little Town of Bethlehem."

Music & Memory …Statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association reveal that over 5 million Americans are living each day with the memory loss of Alzheimer’s disease. There are over 15 million caregivers for those individuals. Help for caregiv-ers is coming from a somewhat surprising source, music. Research has shown that our memories associated with music are cataloged in our brain differently than other memories making music the key to retrieving the memo-ries. The trick to finding success utilizing music to rea-waken people’s memories is to find songs that were meaningful to the person’s life and past. You can help those with memory loss reconnect with their memories and music by donating your old iPods with chargers (any type but shuffles are preferred), CDs or iTunes gift cards. Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice and Breckenridge Village are providing this innovative Music & Memory program and are collaborating with St Gabriel to sponsor an iPod donation drive this January. Items can be donated at the parish office. Please clear the iPod of all music/
videos/pictures prior to donating. Here’s to our health! Pam Lewis, Parish Nurse
Please pray for the ill and hospitalized members of our Parish, their families and caregivers. Pray for an end to abortion
and for the respect of all life.
