INT. – OFFICE FLOOR IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN BUILDING

Employees are walking briskly around the halls of a busycorporate office.

JOHN SMITH, a tall, slender, handsome man in his latetwenties and dressed in a shirt and tie, is carrying a filefolder while walking down a hallway. He stops at an officedoorway.

INT. – THE BOSS‟S OFFICE

An older GENTLEMAN in his early fifties is sitting behindhis desk in a well-decorated office. He stops staring athis computer when he notices John enter.

JOHN SMITHSir, I‟m about done with theRadke presentation, just haveto add a few final things.

BOSSThat‟s great to hear my man. Goodwork. It‟s not due until the middleof next week, so let‟s take a look

at it Monday afternoon.

JOHNSounds good. That gives meplenty of time to double checkthe flow and data.

BOSS(smiles)

Hey John, it‟s a Friday in thesummer. It‟s nice and sunny out,

too nice to be stuck in theoffice. You‟ve worked hard this week, why don‟t you take theafternoon off, start the weekendearly.

JOHNAre you sure sir?




BOSSYeah, come on, get outta here,I‟ve got everything under control.

JOHNThanks a lot. I‟m gonna go home,pick up my girl and start ourgetaway weekend a little early.

BOSSHey, so how is Amy doing thesedays? Jeez I haven‟t seen her inmonths, not since the Christmasparty. Ahhh, that young ladylooked so elegant in her holidayparty dress.

JOHNShe‟s doing good, doing greatactually.

BOSSThat‟s good to hear. How lon ghave you guys been dating for?

JOHNThree and a half, almost fouryears now.

BOSSThat‟s a long time, what the hellare you waiting for? She ismarriage material if I‟ve everseen marriage material. That isan all-American, take home tomom, girl next door type of girl.

JOHNThank you sir. But seriously I do

realize how great she is, but, Idon‟t know, I just want to makesure she‟s the right one.

BOSSYou‟ve been dating her for fouryears!?!? Living with her for,what, over a year now? How muchmore time do you need to figurethis out? Shit or get off the pot!




JOHNI know, I know.

BOSSLook John, I‟ve met this girl ona few occasions. She‟s a great,great girl. You‟re not going todo any better than her, believeme. I mean, have you seenyourself? I‟m just kidding. John walks away from the office.

INT. - JOHN‟S OFFICE

John is sitting behind his desk, staring at his computerscreen. His desk is immaculate, all the papers areproperly filed in folders and office supplies are organizedin their specific place.

A picture of the happy couple, John and Amy in front of aChristmas tree, sits next to the computer screen.

John is surfing through TIFFANY.COM, looking for anengagement ring.

JOHN(speaking quietly

to himself)OK, let‟s see, Tiffany‟s, Tiffany‟s,Tiffany‟s. Man, I don‟t knowthe first thing about jewelry,engagement rings.

(pause)Hmm, I could get a Tiffany settingring…let‟s see what the hell oneof those is…

(reading the website)The world‟s most celebrated

engagement ring, the Tiffanysetting lifts the diamond up intothe light for brilliance, dispersion,and scintillation so spectacular itcan be seen across a crowded room.

(thinking to himselffor a moment)

What the hell is scintillation?Oh well, let me see what elsethe y have…hmmm, I guess I couldsee what the deal is with the

Lucida ring.

The phone rings. John looks at the phone number on hiscaller ID and, recognizing the number, picks up the phone.

JOHNHey Mom. How‟s it going?

(pauses to listen)Yep, I‟m doing good. Yeah, so I‟m

JOHN (cont‟d) leaving work in a few minutesactually, so we‟ll be up there ina few hours. You guys going to comeout and meet us for drinks tomorrownight?

(pauses to listen)Excellent, then we‟re doing Sundaybrunch before we head back tothe city, right?

(pauses to listen)Sounds like a plan. Have a nicenight and we‟ll see you tomorrow.

(pauses to listen)I know, she‟s excited to see youtoo. You know she already considersyou like a mother-in-law.

(pauses to listen)No, seriously, she does.

(pauses to listen)OK, love you; tell dad I say hiand I‟l l see you tomorrow. Bye

John hangs up the phone and goes back to looking at hiscomputer.

JOHN(to himself)

OK, so where was I again? Ohyes, checking out some engagementrings, like this Lucida one.

John reads the description to himself and reads a few wordsout loud on occasion.

JOHNPatented…Diamond…Incomparable beauty…Remarkable. Well thatsounds pretty good. Let me take

a look at one more, maybe thisEtoile design could work.

(reading the website)Tiffany‟s exclusive Etoile designis the quintessential expressionof graceful modernity. Etoile?Scintillation? Lucida? I don‟tknow what half these words onthis website mean.




John takes his hand off the mouse, sits back in his chairand exhales as he weighs his options for a moment.

JOHNScrew it, maybe I should justtake her to the friggin‟ store and have her pick it. That wayI can‟t screw it up. Yeah that‟swhat I‟ll do…I‟ll propose to herthis weekend on the Vineyard andwe‟ll go ring shopping next week.Maybe we can even elope on ourtrip to Vegas in the Fall toavoid the long, arduous task ofplanning a wedding with ourfamilies…well, that‟s probablyjust too much wishful thinking.I can‟t be that lucky .

John‟s office phone rings and he picks it up. On the otherend of the line is CINDY , Amy‟s best friend in New York.

Cindy is a very cute girl in her mid-twenties with long,beautiful blonde hair.

JOHNHey Cindy.

CINDYHey John, so to what do I owe thepleasure of your earlier voicemail?What‟s up?

JOHNWhat are you doing right now?Are you on your summer Friday?

CINDYIn fact I am. I just got in

from my rooftop, I was layingout in the sun for a few hours.

JOHNSo you‟re not doing anything now?

CINDYNah, not really.




JOHNGood, come out and meet me.

Cindy laughs because she doesn‟t think he‟s serious .

CINDYNow?

JOHNYeah, now.

CINDYWhy?

JOHN(hesistantly)

Well, ummm, because I..I..

CINDYSpit it out John.

JOHNI need a female‟s opinion. Anopinion that relates to her bestfriend and, umm, a specific typeof jewelry.

CINDY

Oh my god, are you doing what Ithink you‟re doing?

JOHNYes, yes I am. I‟m going tofinally do it.

A big smile covers Cindy‟s face as tears form in her eyes.

CINDYOh my god, that is so awesome.

This is great! This is so great!

JOHNI know, it‟s exciting isn‟t it?

CINDYI don‟t think I can breath! I‟mso happy for you guys!




JOHNWait, wait, hold on, stop crying.Please stop crying. Geez, if Ididn‟t know it I‟d think that you‟rethe one being proposed to, not Amy.

CINDYI‟m just so happy for Amy, forthe both of you. This is goingto be a great wedding, I alreadycan‟t wait.

JOHNSo meet me out in front ofTiffany‟s in 15 minutes. I wantto go ring shopping and I‟d loveto get some advice and opinionsfrom Amy‟s best friend in thecity. Also, I think I coulduse some moral support too, thiscould be a pretty daunting task.

CINDYDaunting?

JOHNYeah, we‟ve checked out ringsbefore just for the hell of it

and well, you know how Amy is,she liked everything she triedon…EVERYTHING. So, I need you togive me some guidance in the ringdepartment, you generally knowwhat she likes and dislikes.

CINDYI‟d love to go ring shopping withyou, of course.

JOHNGreat, be there in 15 minutesthough, I wanna do this quick soI can still get home early andsurprise Amy.

CINDYOK, OK, I‟m leaving now.




A few seconds after John hangs up the phone, his officephone rings again. He looks at the caller ID andcontemplates whether or not he should pick it up.

JOHNToo bad, Mr. “Whoever You Are.”I‟m off the clock and gettingthe hell outta here now.

John shuts down his computer then stands up, kisses hisfingers, presses them against the photo of him and Amy onhis desk and walks out the office.

EXT. – SIDEWALK OF A BUSY UPPER EAST SIDE STREET – DAY

John walks up the street, weaving around several otherpedestrians and stops outside a deli. He studies thevarious kinds of roses displayed along the outside wall.

JOHNI‟ll take a dozen of the yellowones.

The DELI WORKER hands him the dozen roses as John takes outhis wallet and pays. Then he grabs the roses and continueswalking up the street.

INT. – JOHN AND AMY‟S APARTMENT

John walks into his apartment and immediately puts his keyson a table by the door.

The apartment is a typical one-bedroom NYC dwelling; asmall kitchen and even smaller dining area leads to aliving room with the basics: a furniture set from JenniferConvertibles, an entertainment system complete with a flatscreen plasma TV and a desk off to the side of the roomthat represents a hastily created office area.

A hallway leads from the living room to the bathroom andbedroom. John walks down this hallway toward

THE BEDROOM

AMY, a very attractive woman with curly shoulder-lengthAuburn hair in her mid-to-late twenties, is having sex withPETER, a dark haired, skinny guy the same age as Amy, onthe couple‟s bed.




Peter is on his knees behind her, kissing her neck, whileAmy is straight up on her knees with her back to him.

Their hands are all over each other and they both take sometime to caress Amy‟s breasts.

AMY(moaning in ecstasy)

Oh my god, you‟re so good. I‟ve,I‟ve never been touched likethis before.

Both Amy and Peter are so deeply involved in each otherthey don‟t notice John approachin g the doorway.

John drops the roses in complete shock.

JOHNWhat the fuck?!?!

Amy stops abruptly and immediately jumps off the bed onceshe notices John.

As a naked Amy runs past John to get into the bathroom, hepicks up the roses and slugs her over the head with them.The roses drop to the floor in several pieces.

Once Amy is out of the room, John turns to Peter, who has

put on his t-shirt and is struggling to put his pants on.

JOHNAnd who the hell are you?!?!

PETER(stuttering)

I‟m, I‟m, I‟m annnn oooooldfriend.

JOHN

You seem to be a little morethan an old friend!

John approaches Peter, clenches his fist and knocks him outwith one quick punch to the face.

Next, John leans down and grabs him by the neck.

JOHNCome on, get outta my bedroom!




John drags his limp body out of his bedroom and to

THE LIVING ROOM

John drags Peter into the middle of the living room anddrops him, face first, onto the floor.

JOHN(yelling)

Amy…Amy, get out here now!

Amy, wearing a fluffy, red robe, comes out of the bathroomcrying; holding a Kleenex.

JOHNWhat the fuck is going on aroundhere?!?!?! I come home early tosee this?

AMY(crying)

You weren‟t supposed to be homefor another three hours.

JOHNWhat does that have to do withanything? You‟re not supposedto be fucking another guy. I

can‟t believe you‟d do this…Ican‟t believe you‟d throw awayfour years of our lives likethis. I CAN‟T FUCKIN‟ BELIEVEYOU‟D DO THIS!

John flips out and pounds and punches the wall. Then hewalks over to a coffee table, grabs a porcelain figurineand throws it against the wall, breaking it into a severaltiny pieces.

Next he grabs a dinner plate and wine glass off of anothertable and smashes it on the floor.

Finally, in one last burst of anger, he marches over to hisdesk and clears it off with one fell swoop of his arm. Thecomputer, a clock and a lamp all go crashing to the ground.

AMY(screaming)

Noooo, stop breaking our stuff!




JOHNMy stuff, it‟s my stuff now! You‟ve lost all right s andprivileges to our stuff!

John walks over to another coffee table and picks up aframed picture of Amy and himself arm-in-arm in CentralPark on a winter day. They are standing in front ofWollman Rink with the NYC skyline behind them.

After looking at the picture for a moment, John smashes itdown on the coffee table.

The glass frame breaks into many little pieces and thepicture falls to the ground.

AMYThat‟s my favorite picture of us.

John steps on the picture.

JOHNIt was your favorite picture of us.

AMYOne of our first pictures togetherwhen we started dating. We wereso cute.

JOHNApparently that‟s all in thedistant past now.

John sits down on the couch and runs his fingers throughhis hair as he contemplates his next move.

AMYLook, I love you but things havechanged between us.

JOHN(calmly)

Like what? What has changed?

AMY(struggling to talk)

You kkknnooww, things…certainthings.




Peter groans and gets on his hands and knees attempting toget away.

JOHN(interrupts)

Excuse me for a moment.

John stands up, yanks the audio receiver off of hisentertainment center and bashes Peter over the head withit.

He picks it up again, stands over Peter‟s limp body andwails on his head repeatedly with the receiver.

JOHNI‟m going to bash your fuckin‟head in! You hear me dickhead!I‟m going to bash your motherfuckinghead in!!

PETERNo…please, stop. It hurts.

JOHNGod damn, you whine like alittle bitch. I can‟t believemy girlfriend is cheating on mewith such a pussy! This is

embarrassing.

Amy screams and jumps on John, punching him in the back.

AMY(screams)

Noooooo!!!!

John continues slamming the receiver on Peter a few moretimes while Amy is on his back.

JOHNI‟m going to fuck you up prick!

John pushes Amy off him then slaps her across the face.This stuns her momentarily, but she jumps on his backagain.

JOHNGet off me bitch!




John bends over, puts his hand on the back of Amy‟s neck and flips her over his back.

Amy falls awkwardly onto the coffee table then rolls to theground and clutches her back.

John kicks and punches Peter. Peter is covered in bloodwhich also manages to get all over John‟s hands and face .

After John finishes his assault, he kneels down, gets closeto Peter‟s face and stares at him.

JOHNWhat are you now bitch? Youaren‟t a stud anymore are you?ARE YOU?!?!? What happened tothe asshole who was fucking mygirlfriend a few minutes ago?What happened to Mr. Cool Guywho was using my condoms andcologne? You ain‟t no man now.You‟re nothing! You‟re a pieceof shit!

Amy is laying on the ground watching John‟s actions. Sheis helpless to stop anything since she can hardly move.

AMY

(crying)Jesus John, h e‟s barely breathing.Let him go. Let him go please.Jesus, I‟m sorry, I‟m so sorry.

John grabs Peter‟s hair and bangs his head into the floorrepeatedly.

JOHNFucking douchebag.

Peter begins sobbing.

JOHNThat‟s right asshole, cry , crylik e a bitch…cry like a littlefucking bitch.

John lets go of Peter‟s head and looks over at Amy.




JOHNYou‟re sorry for what? You‟resorry you got caught, right?You‟re sorry that I found out;that‟s all, right ?

AMYI‟m sorry for everything.

JOHN(thinking)

OK.

John stands up and walks over Amy. Amy is looking down atthe floor sobbing uncontrollably.

John turns back around to Peter and, in one quick motion,violently stomps his foot down on the side of his neck. Hefollows that up with three more vicious stomps to his head.

JOHNUnfortunately for him, I don‟tbelieve you for one second.I know you; you‟re just sorryyou got caught. You deceitfulbitch.

Peter spits up blood and lets out one final whimper as John

calmly walks into the bathroom.

Amy crawls over to Peter and immediately checks his pulse.

AMY(yells)

You killed him! You bastard!

Amy holds Peter‟s bloody head in her chest as she rocksmethodically back and forth in shock.

John comes out of the bathroom, coolly cleaning off Peter‟sblood from his hands and face with a white towel. Withevery scrub more blood appears on the once pristine towel.

JOHN(calmly)

He‟s dead?

AMYYes.




JOHNGood.

AMYYou heartless bastard.

JOHNOh, I‟m the bastard? I wasn‟tthe one who was just gettingnailed from behind by thisfuckin‟ jerkoff.

AMYYou didn‟t have to kill him.

JOHNWhat did you expect me to do?

AMYYou could‟ve acted like a human being.

John grabs Amy by the wrist, forces her to stand up to getaway from Peter and pushes her onto the couch.

JOHNCome on, get up…get away from him.

John takes a seat back on the other couch and looks at Amy.There are a few seconds of silence while John stares at

her.

JOHNSo I guess the question now is… what should I do with you?

AMYPlease don‟t do anything to me.Please don‟t. I‟m so sorry. I

AMY (cont‟d) wish I could go back in time andchange everything. Please don‟thurt me.

JOHNDon‟t worry, I‟m not going tohurt you. I love you. How odd isthat? I come home to find mygirlfriend fucking some random dudeand, after I regain my composure,one of my first reactions is to saythat I still love you. Pretty screwedup isn‟t it. I feel like a schmuckjust saying that to you.

AMYWell I still love you too. Ilove you very much. You‟re not a schmuck.

John stands up and walks over to the window, as he looksout of it tears form in the corner of his eyes.

JOHNWhy did you do it Amy? Just tellme why did you do it? I gave youanything you wanted. We had

everything going for us too, wewere the envy of our friends andfamilies.

AMYI don‟t want to talk about it.

JOHNThat‟s not an acceptable answer.

AMY

(yells)I DON‟T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!

JOHNOK, fine. You don‟t want totalk about it, b ut mark my words… at some point today, you willtalk about it.

John stands over Peter‟s dead body and stares down at him.




JOHNSo who was this limp dick loseranyway?

AMYYou don‟t remember him?

JOHNNo, should I?

AMYProbably…you‟ve met him before.

JOHN(thinking)

Hmm, I don‟t think I rememberhim.

FLASHBACK

INT. – NEW YORK CITY BAR

A lively scene at a typical Midtown NYC after work happyhour - young male and female professionals dressed inshirts and ties and skirts mingle with each other by thepacked bar area.

John is in the middle of telling a story to a few of hisCO-WORKERS, all of who are in their early twenties anddressed more casually than most of the other bar patrons.

JOHN…So I say to my prick client,“yeah I‟ll get it to you; fivemonths from now! ”...I‟m so fedup with his shit.




John‟s co -workers all laugh.

MALE CO-WORKER #1Damn, so what did he say?

JOHNI thought he was gonna shit.After the shock wore off he toldme,

(does an impressionof his client)

“you‟re going to do it and you‟regoing to have it to me first thingtomorrow morning or it‟ll be yourass!” Fuck him!

MALE CO-WORKER #2So what are you going to do?

Amy enters the bar with her hometown childhood friend,Peter, who is in town for a long weekend.

The two approach John and the rest of Amy‟s co-workers;John is the first to notice her entrance.

JOHNHey everybody, it‟s Amy!

AMYHey guys, what‟s going on?

JOHNNothing buttercup.

AMYGuys, I‟d like to introduce youall to a friend of mine from backhome in Alabama, Pete. Pete, thisis John and the rest of the gangI work with.

JOHN(shakes Peter‟s hand)

Hey Pete, how‟s it going?

PETERGood, good.

JOHNYou enjoying yourself in New Yorkso far?

PETERYeah, it‟s a great time; it‟s alot different from where I comefrom though.

JOHN

I can imagine.

AMY(interrupts)

So we‟re all here right?

Jonh looks around and surveys the scene.




JOHNLooks like it; this should be thewhole crew for tonight at least.

AMYOK, shall we grab a table then?

JOHNWe shall.

AMYLead the way, Smitty.

John leads the convoy of co-workers away from the bar andover to the dining room area.

Peter follows with Amy behind him. Amy puts a hand onPeter‟s back and allows him to guide her to their table.

FLASHBACK ENDS

INT. – JOHN AND AMY ‟S APARTMENT, IN THE LIVING ROOM

Amy looks down l ovingly at Peter‟s limp body.

AMYThat‟s Peter.

JOHNWait…that sorry motherfucker isPeter?

AMYYes, it‟s Peter.

After having taken a seat on the couch, John stands backup, walks over to Peter and stares down at him.

With his foot, he moves Peter‟s face so that it is looking

up at him, which allows John to get a better look at him.

JOHNWow, he‟s pretty different fromthe last time I saw him. Stilllooks like a douchebag though.

John does a once over of Peter‟s body from head to toe.




JOHNLooks like he grew a few inchesin the past couple years. What,did he do? Go through pubertywhen he was 25 or something?I can‟t believe I actually sh ookhands with this asshole.

(shaking his head)I should‟ve known.

AMYShould‟ve known what?

JOHNI should‟ve known this, I should‟veseen this coming. I mean afterall you are Amy Underwood…

John paces around the living room.

AMYWha t‟s that supposed to mean?

John gets up into Amy‟s face.

John backs away from Amy‟s face.

JOHNReally? What about Jimmy Daniels?What about Jeff Stern? How aboutSteve McNamara? Or Michael Sheen?Wait, what am I talking about? Ialmost forgot about Chris „what‟shis name,‟ the guy you nailed inthe bathroom at that office party.How could I forget about a guyyou nailed in a dirty, dive barbathroom with all your co-workersaround? The look on everyone‟sface when they saw you drag himinto the bathroom one minute, thencome out ten minutes later with yourmake-up smeared and your shirt onbackwards. John takes a seat back on the couch.
