THE POWER OF WE
Dear Parents,
Another month of the 2019-20 school year has come and gone! The feeling of summer has quickly faded and the crisp fall mornings are now upon us. Football Friday nights are wrapping up, the sounds of basketballs are
starting to echo throughout the gym, and we concluded our 44th Annual Booster Bar Sale with new sales record!
Our BLMS Fall Sport Teams had many ups and downs this past season, but we all know that we learn more from the times where we are most challenged and going against the wind, than we do when things are easy and with the wind at our backs! It is our job as adults to be there for them, to lift them up, and to persevere through tough times. The challenges we face through athletics often equip us with a skill set that will help us in life. We hope our young Raiders are able to take these experiences and apply them in the future to make them more resilient.
Our 44th Annual Booster Bar Sale was a huge success due to your cooperation. Each year we continue to sell more and more chocolate to our communi-ties. It always amazes me how motivated our students are to distribute these candy bars throughout our communities!
November is also a month where we pay tribute to our Nation’s Veterans. These heroic men and women deserve our recognition for their service to our country and to the very freedoms we are fortunate to have every day. Please take time to thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service.
In closing, all of us here at BLMS would like to thank you all so much for the con-tinued support. Benjamin Logan Middle School is ranked as a “Top Ten” middle school in the state, because we have such supportive parents and guardians throughout our district. We are one of the best, because you are the BEST! Sincerely,
Scott Frederick

The seventh grade ELA classes started off
the year soaring! Literally! While reading
the novel, Freak the Mighty, students spread
their wings as engineers crafting rubber
band ornithopter. In small groups, students refined their
collaboration and problem solving skills and created flying
ornithopter. With friendly competition, three teams came
away champions (pictures included).
THE POWER OF WE
All About the 7th Grade:
We’re on the Web:
English Language Arts
Science
Along with the ornithopter, Freak
the Mighty introduced students to
the world of Max and Kevin who
quickly captured the hearts of the
7th graders. Kevin used his world
of imagination to overcome his
battle with Morquio Syndrome.
This led into a short research
project and creating infographics
illustrating the facts, symptoms,
and treatments of Morquio Syn-
drome. As the students’ passion
continues to grow, we are begin-
ning a Penny Drive for the MPS Socie-
ty which supports patients and families
with Morquio Syndrome and related
illnesses.
A collaboration with the Madriver Theatre Works, Zoot Theatre Company, and the 7th grade students will a new level of
excitement and engagement to wrap up the month of October! Keep an eye out for more updates!

In seventh grade science we are currently
working on our water unit. Students are
building on their knowledge of the water
cycle and learning about the properties
of water and its structure. We will also
discuss surface water, groundwater, ocean currents and how
we as humans impact water. After completion of the water
unit the students will learn about the Earth’s atmosphere,
weather and climate. Water is one of our greatest resources
and there are many interesting documentaries on Netflix,
Amazon Prime and YouTube that students and their families
could watch to learn more about this life giving resource.
THE POWER OF WE
Social Studies
Math
In Social Studies, we continue our trip through world history. Currently, we find ourselves in
the time of the Roman Empire. Students learned about the Roman Republic, how it was a mod-
el for US government, and how it ended (thanks Caesar). We learned that war elephants sound
awesome, but ultimately, African elephants don’t do well crossing
mountains. We also read from Shakespeare’s The Life and Death of
Julius Caesar, and are now learning about Augustus and the beginning of Roman Peace
(oxymoron???). Along with the history, we will also be discussing Roman achievements, and the
importance of those contributions today.
On a side note, please remind your student to bring home materials nightly to review content covered in class for 5-10
minutes. This will increase understanding of what is covered. Please remember you can contact me by phone (937-599-2386
Ext. 3212), by email ([email protected]), or in person if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.
Mrs. Davis, the STEM teacher, recently joined 7th-grade math class to incorporate a very unique enrichment activity for students where they were working in small groups to create Light-up Planetariums, working Etchasketches, Glowing Pendulums, and stained glass mosaics. Students were given a Tinker box that had all of the parts and blueprints needed to build their specific items. Students had to follow the direc-tions on the blueprint to build their Planetariums, Etchasketches, Glowing Pendulums, or stained glass mosaics. The engagement the students had in this project was impressive. To
watch the amount of perseverance and problem solving that was needed to see the model through to completion by the students is what makes STEM lessons so awesome. Mrs. Davis provided such a unique opportunity for our students to show their ability to think at a higher level as well as show their amazing creativity. The final products are currently displayed in the STREAM center. These projects were difficult, engaging, and fun.
In mathematics class we have been
solving real world problems involv-
ing positive and negative rational
numbers. We have entered the
world of algebra as we are learning
how to simplify expressions and
equations with mixed signs. We will
be completing some in class projects to aide in stu-
dent growth.
THE POWER OF WE
7th Grade Career Day
Benjamin Logan Middle School’s 7th grade class recently participated in a Career Day event spon-sored by the Midwest Regional ESC and the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Our students gained hands-on exposure to many occupations that are well-known, but also to other, possibly unfa-miliar career choices.
Students had the opportunity to talk with representatives from 40 different professions from Logan County including: law enforcement, technology, agriculture, engineering, various medical fields, hu-man resources, funeral director, and many more occupations. The students also completed a “scavenger hunt” assignment that gave them a chance to interact with the presenters, ask questions about the occupations, and ask about specific job requirements.
Through this career exploration activity, our students gained much information to consider when
choosing a career and reaching their personal career goals. This program is just one opportunity our
BLMS students have as we continue to explore career opportunities.
