Block Technique Using SmartBone

Clinical case by Dr. Giorgio Carusi

Patient: female, 55 years old, good initial health conditionSurgical anatomic site: 45-46Pre-surgical clinical situation: bone atrophy Surgical procedure: thickness transverse recovery

SURGERYDue to its high fixation tenacity, the block is fixed with

two osteosynthesis screws to obtain a perfect primary stability

FOLLOW-UP 2 MONTHSGood osteointegration is clearly noticeable

X-RAY ANALYSIS 4 MONTHS

From the imagistic point of view, SmartBone® addition seems to be well integrated with a good structure and

density; the bone density around lower mini-screws has an average of 500 HU

The histological analysis of the biopsies (after 4 months from SmartBone® graft) evidences an intense new formation of bone around the SmartBone® matrix (bone with empty gaps) and several lines of new bone growth, thus highlighting a good osteoconduction of the biomaterial. SmartBone® is progressively substituted by new young bone. Inside the new bone matrix, the purple lines (growth-lines) indicate a good osteoinduction. This phenomenon is also evidenced by osteoblasts presence on the outer surface of the newly formed bone where young woven bone is present. The pictures clearly show osteocytes within the gaps and a hint of bone lamellae, therefore the bone is quite mature.

FOLLOW-UP 1 YEARA very good bone quality around the implants

ensures a perfect stability

FOLLOW-UP 2 YEARSThere is not noticeable resorption in vertical

dimension and also the horizontal aspect of the bone density looks normal;

a good osteointegration is achieved

FOLLOW-UP 3 YEARSThe implants are surrounded by

excellent bone quality
