The largest issuer of credit cards to U.S. small businesses has launched Chase Ink Business Preferred, which provides three

reward points for every dollar spent on the first $150,000 annually in combined purchases on travel (airfare, hotels, car rentals, taxis, and trains), on shipping, on advertising with search engines and social media sites, and on internet, cable, and phone services. Chase Ink Business Preferred cardholders will earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 in the first three months. If they redeem those points for travel using

the Chase Ultimate Rewards loyalty program, they receive the equivalent of $1,000 in value because points are worth 25% more. Points can also be redeemed for cash back and prepaid cards. The card has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year for applications made at any of the 5,300 Chase branches.

Small business credit card spending has grown by double digits the last three years, and Chase hopes to continue that pattern. Chase Ink Business Preferred’s reward categories were designed to provide an incentive to move spending to the card. In particular, travel, shipping, and digital advertising rewards were selected after research identified them as being important to owners of small businesses.

Chase has four other small business credit cards — Chase Ink Business Cash and co-branded products with Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Marriott Hotels. It aligns Chase Commerce Solutions (merchant acquiring) with business banking divisions to generate growth from the four million small businesses that use one or more Chase products. One new product is Chase Business Quick Capital, which involves a partnership with OnDeck, an online-only lender to small businesses. Chase uses OnDeck’s

technology but underwrites and maintains all loans.Jeff Hofmann is General Manager at

minimum monthly payments on all charges owed over many months, while another with

$5,000 in balances was paying off $5,000 in full every month. Credit card issuers waste time and money sending the same new card offer to both people.

Credit bureau and analytics firm Experian has launched Extended Trade, a new product within its Credit3D suite of credit risk management tools. Credit3D broke the existing model of static credit score risk management by providing lenders with two additional information fields per trade line that are supplied with trended data. Extended

Trade expands additional fields to 18 trade-level features. This new historic and trend data provides issuers with a much

more comprehensive understanding of a specific individual’s consumer spending and

payback behavior, their current estimated interest rates, potential profitability, and the number of months remaining on all of their loans including card, student, and mortgage. It can provide insights on credit prospects for more precise targeting of new card accounts. Issuers could learn that a low interest rate offer they were considering isn’t a better deal versus the prospect’s existing card account. It could target a revolving balance consolidation offer to

some and a stronger rewards component to others.

Experian is the first credit bureau to offer a product like Extended Trade, which leverages 24 months of historical balance, credit limit, scheduled payment, actual payment, and payment date information. Experian provides credit files on 220 million adults living in the U.S. Extended Trade is available only in the U.S.

100 Deloitte employees were issued contactless smart cards with prepaid balances for use at

three charities that sold cupcakes as a fundraiser. The test lasted 45 minutes. All cardholder card balances were updated in real time on the blockchain ledger. The charities immediately received funds from the sale, something that was possible because the buyers were using prepaid accounts. This blockchain test did not incorporate a credit card payment, which is pulled from a line of credit, not pushed from a prepaid account.

Deloitte’s open-source Smart Identity blockchain, which was built to provide identification security and full compliance with AML and KYC regulations,

talked with the blockchain-based processing service provided by distributed ledger technology company

SETL Payments, which then settled all payments into Metro’s legacy Temenos core banking platform. Cardholders created

identity records on the Deloitte blockchain, which tracks consumers and provides them with the means to prove who they are. It then posted their certified

details to the SETL ledger. Cardholder credentials were then available to facilitate purchases at the fundraiser.

SETL, Deloitte, and Metro state that the test went beyond a proof of concept. SETL’s blockchain has speed, capacity, security, the ability to handle payments in any local currency, and can settle directly into any existing general ledger technology. There is no need for an intervening cryptocurrency

step. By running chains in parallel, SETL says it is engineered to process 1.4 billion or more

transactions a second.SETL’s technology functions

similarly to the SIM card technology used by mobile network operators (MNOs)

partnership with System Innovators (SI), a system integrator to local and state governments. SI provides a back-office service that reconciles all payments received as well as a front-end software interface that supports payments handled at lockboxes, online, and over the counter (including cash).

The partners have dozens of government agencies as customers in common. They will offer an integrated payment processing system that combines SI’s cashiering and revenue management software with Elavon’s EMV chip card processing, point-to-point encryption, and tokenization services. Elavon’s security suite greatly reduces the scope of PCI compliance for government agencies, which typically view the adoption of added security measures more favorably than commercial businesses. In addition,

government agencies operate under stricter standards than commercial businesses when it comes to fully reconciling all funds received as payments. Elavon’s partnership with System Innovators will link payment data to all related information about the payment, from acceptance to back-office reconciliation. Citi Pay is a stand-alone app. It is not embedded in the Citi mobile banking app. After Citi customers download the app from Google Play, their credit and debit cards can be enrolled with a few clicks. Cardholders will be able to view their available line of credit or deposit account balance within the app before and after a purchase. Access to the Citi Pay app is by the same username and password

Citi already supports Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay in the U.S., where it will launch Citi Pay in 2017. Those apps also require a download and an enrollment process. Citi Pay

mobile wallet customers in the U.S. will automatically be enrolled in Masterpass, Mastercard’s digital checkout and mobile wallet service. Currently, Masterpass offers digital checkout services at 300,000 merchants in 33 countries.

offer a proprietary mobile payment app after Chase, Capital One, and Wells Fargo. Citi Pay, Capital One

Wallet, and Wells Fargo Wallet are NFC-based. Chase Pay is QR code-based. Capital One and Bank of America, which does not offer a proprietary mobile wallet, also enable mobile payments through Masterpass. Citi, Chase, Capital One, and Bank of America will also promote person-to-person mobile payments through the recently launched Zelle service from clearXchange.

Europe. Post-merger integration of operations and human resources have been completed, and the migration of Payleven merchants to the SumUp

platform is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. At that time, SumUp’s platform will support 1.1 million merchants in 15 countries, mostly in Europe but also in the U.S., Brazil, and Chile.

SumUp signs contracts directly with merchants. It also provides software development kits for iOS and Android devices that let third parties connect with its end-to-end, EMV-compliant payment platform. An open API provided to partners provides payment processing services to their online merchants on a white-label basis.

Those partners include banks (UBS, Unicredit), resellers (Apple, Staples), corporations (Tupperware), and taxi apps (Hailo and MyTaxi). In addition, some acquirers refer micromerchants to SumUp, which refers larger merchants to them in return.

Revenues are approaching $100 million for the expanded SumUp, which has been cash-flow positive since August of this year. The company does its own underwriting of merchant prospects.

SumUp recently launched a fully integrated wooden cash register (shown here), which holds an Apple iPad and a card acceptance terminal manufactured for

SumUp, which can pop out if the merchant needs to take it to a table for a payment. When in the box, card payments are dipped into a slot on the top. Contactless payments are tapped against an NFC reader mounted on the side. For signatures, the iPad pivots in the box to face the cardholder.

SumUp owns an e-money license in Europe, which allows for direct settlement into Visa and Mastercard. Sponsor banks handle that role in Brazil, Chile, and the U.S. Combined investment in SumUp and Payleven, which is in excess of $120 million, includes funding from BBVA, Holtzbrinck, and American Express.

pasted in by an automated bot or script as part of a criminal attack. NuData’s platform captures keystroke cadence as well as hundreds of other behavioral biometrics, device and location analytics including the way users interact with an application, the angle at which they hold their device, and its settings. In combination,

these analytics create a passive biometric identification that can be retained to create a historical profile of the user, which can then be deployed to authenticate in real time that person on subsequent online sessions.

Its passive biometric security allows consumers to be identified doing things they have to do to perform online sessions and

card-not-present transactions. There are no interruptive actions. By comparison, physical biometrics involving fingerprints, iris, voice, selfies, etc. all have

at least a little friction tied at least to enrollment and perhaps also to

execution. Friction increases when a second biometric must be used because of a problem with the first or when a single biometric fails and the transaction reverts to username and password.

Early Warning will use NuData’s technology to help secure person-to-person and other transactions. Other customers include 2 of the 5 largest U.S.

banks and 2 of the 10 largest U.K. banks. These customers use NuData to identify valid devices and their users and to stop automated attacks on online sessions by bots and scripts. Large ecommerce merchants and their acquirers have used NuData since 2008 to identify valid buyers versus criminals intent on fraud. Expansion of that work to pass NuData’s signals to issuers to be used in the cardholder authorization request is possible but would involve cooperation of the card networks.Ryan Wilk is Director of Customer
