Welcome to BETH 2019!

We are very happy to have you at BETH 2019 and hope that it is an inspiring and rewarding experience for you.

The main goal of BETH is to spur blockchain education at universities and to make Switzerland one of the leading hubs in the Blockchain and IoT space. We want you to become the blockchain engineers of the future!

We have tried to assemble an excellent program for you, with speakers who are experts in their fields, hands-on education, and opportunities to code, build, and demo your ideas. But another important aspect of this week is your peers. Get to know each other! Who knows what you might be able to learn from each other now, and what opportunities might arise down the road.

Last but not least, thank you to our parters, sponsors, and friends for enabling this community to grow and making it possible for students from all around the world to participate.

We look forward to hearing what innovative ideas you come up with over the course of the week. We welcome you to Zurich and wish you an enriching, inspiring, and stimulating week!

The BETH 2019organization team

“The challenges we are facing in areas like energy, agriculture and urban life are enormous. We need open-minded and curious people like you to help humanity reach the next level. We are offering you a week full of education, inspiring talks and hands-on project work on blockchain and IoT technol-ogies. Make the best of it!”

Messages from our partners

Blockchain and energy is a promising pair. However, the degree and way in which Blockchain could revolutionize the energy system is not clear yet. SwissEn-ergy is the Federal Council’s program for promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy with voluntary measures. We want to explore which contribution the Blockchain technology can make in this area. As part of the Swiss government, we want to support the development of the technology in our country. BETH offers you the opportunity to create sustainable solutions for the energy system. Let’s innovate!www.energieschweiz.ch

From our roots in agriculture inspections, Peterson Control Union is operating since 1920 as a service-company in the field of logistics, quality, certifications and risk management.

Today we are focusing our efforts in developing services around the sustain-ability & traceability of the industry’s supply chains connected to the food, feed, forestry, biomass, bioenergy, social compliance and textiles markets. With ‘boots on the ground’ in more than 70 countries, we are uniquely placed to manage todays challenges within a modern marketplace.www.petersoncontrolunion.com/

Our world faces existential threats, from financial crises to resource shortages. Use of fossil fuels and raw materials has more than tripled in the last 40 years. To manage contested resources and support people, powerful global informa-tion systems have been built, based on Big Data and AI. At the same time, misuse of Information and Communication Technol-ogies is exploding.

FuturICT 2.0 aims for disruptive innovation by addressing the problems at their root: lack of sustainability. It pursues the vision of a sustainable circular economy based on a multi-dimensional, multi-layered economic system. The combination of IoT with Blockchain Technology and Complexity Science creates entirely new opportunities to address our challenges. For this reason, FuturICT 2.0 explores the potentials of complementary growth principles such as co-creation, co-evolu-tion, collective intelligence, self-organi-zation, and self-regulation.

We aim to address global challenges like resource shortages, climate change, and energy and food supply by building a digital financial system that supports us in achieving the sustainable development goals collectively.

FuturICT 2.0 is an EU FLAG ERA project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation SNF.www.futurict2.eu

Messages from our non-profits & friends

Our mission is to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. From our experience as the world’s leading indepen-dent conservation body, we know that the well-being of people, wildlife and the en-vironment are closely linked. We’re striving to safeguard the natural world, helping people live more sustain-ably and take action against climate change. We spend a lot of time working with communities, with politicians and with businesses to find solutions so people and nature can thrive.www.wwf.org

KISS aims to become the 4th money-free pillar of the Swiss for old age provision system by addressing a wide range of social chal-lenges faced by elderly in a context of rising social se-curity and health care costs.

KISS is a cross-generation neighborhood assistance cooperative working mostly with volunteers. The cooperative maintains a time-bank scheme by which KISS members can earn “KISS hours” for providing assistance to each other. Members can later draw from these collected hours when they need assistance themselves. KISS has 1200 members in all of Switzer-land.www.kiss-zeit.ch

myclimate is a partner for effective climate protection both locally and globally. Together with partners from the economic sector as well as individuals, we want to shape the future of the world through consultation, educ- ation and climate protection projects. myclimate pursues this as a market-oriented and customer-focussed non-profit organisation.

“There is tremendous potential in revolution-ary technologies like the Blockchain, especially for a more sustainable econ-omy and society. We are convinced that events like BIOTS will not only create new possible applications, but will also continue to drive them forward,” says Kai Landwehr, Marketing Manager at myclimate.www.myclimate.org
