TRADITIONAL DRESS UP DAYCBC Pre-School is proudly South African! We recently celebrated all our different cultures by encouraging the children to dress up in their traditional dress. What a wonderful mixture of different colours and materials were seen. We had clothes from the Zulu, Sesotho, Xhosa, Indian and

Tsonga’s to name but a few.A lot of beads were on display as well as skin hats and shoes. The children were very excited and thoroughly enjoyed parading their finery! At the end of this lovely day they put coins which they had collected on the South African flag.

For most teens, selfies are a harmless bit of adolescent fun, no more dangerous than other passing fads. Actual damage by selfie is rare, but it does happen. As a parent, you need to be aware of these risks and become equipped to discuss them with your teen.

SELFIES AND SELF-ESTEEMOne risk factor for selfies is that the act and obsession with taking them can lead teens to the development of poor self-esteem.

There has been some speculation about whether self-portraits help or hurt self-esteem. Out of the few studies that have been conducted on the matter, the verdict on the effects of selfies on teen self-esteem is somewhat conflicting.

A body image survey conducted by the

TODAY Show found that 65% of teen girls feel that selfies boost their self-confidence. 40% of them agreed that social media helps them put their best face forward. However, 53% of respondents alleged that photos of themselves that are posted by others can make them feel bad.

Earlier this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t leave the house for six months because he was

THE SELFIE CULTURE: SHOULD WE BE WORRIED?

You can hardly go onto Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site without being inundated with selfies. A recent study found that a 91% of teens have reportedly posted

a photo of themselves online. With this kind of statistic, odds are that your teen has already taken and posted at least one of these instant self-portraits.

By Steven Wodawww.uknowkids.com

posted or merely sent to one person.College admissions officers and

scholarship foundations now often include a search on social media for prospective students. Many employers have started looking up a job applicant’s online presence and factoring that information into their hiring decisions. That car-surfing stunt a teen photographed in his first year of college may be years in the past. But to an employer, what does that say about the job applicant’s judgment and self-control? He doesn’t know how long ago that picture was taken or how much your teen has changed in the intervening time; he only knows what the photo tells him.

SELFIE SAFETY TIPS: 1. Teach teens early on that selfies, social media posts, and the feedback they receive on social media should not be tied to their self-worth.2. Ensure that your teens are using proper privacy settings throughout their social media accounts.3. Instruct your kids to be careful about the personal settings and items that are featured in selfies.4. Only post selfies that you would be comfortable sharing with the world.

devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures. Eventually, he attempted suicide by overdose.

The chances are pretty good that your teen is not as ill as this young man was, but, while rare, the case demonstrates how poor self-esteem can be exacerbated by the selfie trend. The danger is very real and

is something that should be on every parent’s radar.

SELFIES AND YOUR ONLINE REPUTATIONAs with all online and social media activities, posting selfies can have a negative effect on your child’s online reputation. Both the quantity and subject

matter of photos that are shared with friends on Facebook can impact the level of support and intimacy within their relationships.

Additionally, the permanence of anything that is posted online, like selfies, can haunt a teen years after they’re taken. Although there are a few ways kids can make the social networks they use more protected, there is never a guarantee that something won’t go viral once it is

GREY COLLEGE SECONDARY(t) 051 444 1513 (e) [email protected]

GREY COLLEGE / FNB MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015The Grey College FNB Music Festival will take place on 28 and 29 August 2015 at the Sand du Plessis Theatre. As always, this annual event promises to be a highlight on the Bloemfontein social and cultural calendar. On 27 August, various old-age homes will attend the final dress rehearsal, an afternoon of entertainment, that many would not have had the opportunity to otherwise experience. This festival, which was initiated by former headmaster Dr Michau Heyns is the only event ofits kind in South Africa. The festival was previously known as the Grey College Choir Festival, and was hosted in the school’s Centenary Hall. It was later moved to the Civic Theatre to accommodate the growing number of supporters. In 2005, on the occasion of the school’s 150th anniversary, the Choir Festival

changed its colours. The name changed to the Grey College Music Festival, with the sole purpose of showcasing and enriching the wide variety of the Grey boys’ music talent and to give the Grey boys the opportunity to perform with top artists such as Steve Hofmeyr, Laurika Rauch, DNA Strings, Theuns Jordaan, Nianell, Anna Davel, Drie van die Bestes, Dozi, Karen Zoid, Andre de Villiers, Lize Beekman, Jennifer Jones, Charl du Plessis, Brandon October, Coenie de Villiers, Bianca le Grange, Romanz, Jak de Priester, Caroline-Grace Haasbroek, Valiant Swart, Nadine, Corneil Müller & Klopjag. This year the boys will be joined on stage by talented artists Andriëtte, Elvis Blue, and local singing sensation, Ann Mahlohla. Mrs Celesté Venter, organiser of the event says, “We are thrilled with the artist line-up we were able to

secure this year and rehearsals are going extremely well. We are going to celebrate ten years of ‘Grey’t’ music this year at the Music Festival since the first original Music Festival in 2005 with the 150th birthday celebrations of the school.” based on a longstanding and ongoing relationship between Grey College and the North-West University, is the ideal opportunity to help develop the cultural talents of the youth.” First National Bank has been partnering with Grey College for the last eleven years to present this special event. FNB is the oldest bank in South Africa, and can be traced back to the Eastern Province Bank formed in Grahamstown in 1838. Today, FNB trades as a division of FirstRand Bank Limited. George van Staden, FNB Regional Manager in the Free State said: “By supporting an event of this nature we

would like to demonstrate our commitment to youth development and the arts. If we are not investing in our youth, we are not investing in the potential of our country. We need to give these boys every opportunity to excel and realize their potential. Enduring, rewarding relationships like the one with Grey College are at the heart of what will make us a great bank and a force for good in the greater world.” Tickets for the Music Festival will be available from the Grey College Secondary School office from 4 - 7 August 2015, and tickets for the Saturday afternoon show (public) will be available at the Pacofs offices (051-447 7772).
