October 2018

Head Teacher’s October’s Message:

I hope that everyone enjoyed a pleasant September weekend break.

Our school has gone from strength to strength during the month of September and we are continuing to build on our previous successes.

‘Maths Week Scotland’ was a particular highlight and every class participated in fun, motivating activities to raise the profile and enjoyment of Maths and Numeracy in our school. ‘Engagement’ was Renfrewshire’s theme this year and all classes were fully engaged in Maths challenges, games and problem solving throughout the week. Primary 4 were our ‘Sumdog’ winners and as a school, we answered an incredible 9009 questions with a eighty five percent accuracy rate!

We also celebrated ‘European Day of Languages’ on the 26th September and it was a delight to hear the children learning new vocabulary, engaging in conversations, playing Spanish games and the sound of ‘Baby Shark’ and Disney’s ‘Let it Go’ in multiple languages filled the corridors throughout the day!

This month’s core value is: Team work and we will be working closely as a school to provide the children with opportunities to shine as valued members of a team both in class and throughout the school. Every child is valued and plays an important in our school family and we hope to ‘catch’ our children embracing this school value through their actions, words and deeds.

Now that the weather has turned colder, I would ask that the children come to school prepared with an outdoor jacket and after the October week the outdoor lunchtime benches will not be in use for the children to enjoy their lunch al fresco.

We would like to wish all of our families a lovely October break and we look forward to the Autumn season.

Best Wishes,

Claire Mackenzie ( Head Teacher)

Thank you!Sister Mary Frances was delighted to join the staff for a special tea and presentation in honour of her Jubilee celebrations. She would also like to extend her gratitude to our families and wider school community for their thoughts, prayers and kind words.

I received a lovely message from Father Joe Burke who was delighted to join us for his presentation. The children did a wonderful job during the Mass and Father Joe was very grateful for his gifts and the £140.00 Silverburn gift voucher that was presented on behalf of the School, Parent Council and from private donations. I’m sure he will spend his voucher wisely! Sacraments:

Following adverse weather conditions and an ‘Amber Alert’ warning from the Met Office, the Sacramental meeting with Father Paul was cancelled for the parents of children in Primaries 4, 6 and 7.

The rescheduled date will be: Tuesday 9 th October 2018 at 6.30pm in St. Fillan’s Church Hall. We look forward to seeing you then.

Day, Date and Time EventTuesday 9th October 2018 – 6.30pm in St. Fillan’s ChurchHall.

Primary 4, 6 and 7 Parents are invited to attend a Meeting regarding arrangements for the Sacraments which will be hosted by Father Paul.

Church Visits and October Devotions:

Sister Mary Frances has begun her timetable of events where she will welcome classes for visits to the Church and October Devotions to Our Lady at the Grotto.

If the children have a set of Rosary beads that they can keep in their tray during the month of October, then that would be ideal.

Primary 7 Vocations Mass:

Please note that there will be no First Friday Mass this month as the Primary 7 children have been invited to attend the annual Vocations Mass which will take place in St. Mirin’s Cathedral on Friday 5 th October 2018.

This is a Diocesan event with many schools participating, so I would ask that the children wear full school uniforms with shirts and ties as they will be representing

our school as Ambassadors. Due to timings, it would also be helpful if the children were able to bring a packed lunch on this date. Children who are entitled to a free school meal will be given the opportunity to order a packed lunch should they wish to do so.

School Vision, Values and Aims:

As stated above, this month’s core value focus is: Team Work and I look forward to reporting our achievements in November’s Newsletter in ‘catching’ our children going ‘Above and Beyond’ the St. Fillan Standard.

In September, we focussed on: Responsibility and we were thrilled to highlight the achievement of Darcy in Primary 7 who took on the responsibility for organising a ‘Crafty Kids’ Art stall to raise money for rescue horses. She enlisted the help of Aidan, Grace and Annie to support her with this and they managed to raise around £60.00 for this worthwhile cause.

Another lovely example was in our Primary 7 class when Harrison, Kyle and Ross helped another child over the finishing line during the ‘Fun Run’ at Gryffe High School. This was a proud moment for us all!

There are many more examples, but it has been wonderful to see the children so keen to work with us in going beyond the high expectations that we already expect from every child in terms of attitude, behaviour, motivation and the willingness to help each other and make a difference.

Safeguarding and Child Protection Update (HIGIOS4 2.1):

Promoting Positive Relationships: Everyday Heroes:

The children have embraced the ‘Superhero’ theme around the new ‘Everyday Hero’ award system and I am sure you will have enjoyed seeing the weekly photographs on our closed Facebook page.

Head Teacher’s Awards:

Before we close for the October break, I will host our termly ‘Head Teacher’s Awards’ Assembly. These awards are special rewards and children are identified for a number of reasons by staff members. Be Brave Unleash Creativity Demonstrate Excellence Show/Radiate Enthusiasm

It is important to note that not every child will receive a reward over the period of a school session, although the expectation is that every child will be recognised in some form during their duration with us in St. Fillan’s. Our children understand this and they really are a resilient bunch and are always eager to congratulate a fellow peer for their efforts which is lovely to witness!

Golden Ticket Tea Party:

Congratulations to the winners of September’s ‘Golden Ticket Tea Party.

It is always a pleasure to share a hot chocolate and to hear the children’s stories and latest news.

Visible Consistency/ Visible Kindness:

During September, staff have been working hard to promote the message of ‘Visible Consistency, Visible Kindness’ around our school.

Everyone has enjoyed the daily ‘Meet and Greet’ which happens across the school every morning. No child can escape from being welcomed with open arms in St. Fillan’s!

Each class now has their own ‘Recognition Board’ which is another great way of highlighting children who consistently go above the St. Fillan’s Standard. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) are able to see those children at a glance and praise them for their efforts.

Anti-Bullying:

The SLT engaged in training around ‘Bullying’ and we are now in a position to begin the period of consultation with our parents and carers.

I would love to hear your thoughts and views around this important issue and I will host a ‘Coffee, Cake and Chat’ session on: Tuesday 9 th October at 1.45pm to which you are cordially invited.

If you are unable to attend, then perhaps a Grandparent would be able to represent you at this event?

We will extend this consultation to the wider parent body during our first ‘Parent/Teacher Conference’ on Thursday 11 th October 2018. Be Brave Unleash Creativity Demonstrate Excellence Show/Radiate Enthusiasm

Mobile Phones:

We have a duty of care to protect every child in our school and I would like to remind everyone that mobile phones are not permitted to be viewed/used within the school grounds both prior to the school day beginning and after until the children are through the school gates. Parents will be contacted if children are unable to abide by school rules and policy.

The children are aware of this policy and are reminded daily by Class Teachers and during weekly Assemblies. The children understand that this is for their own safety and the safety of others. It also prevents children being wrongly blamed for inappropriate use of their mobile phone.

Online Safety:

Each class during the month of October will engage in a range of activities which look at dangers of inappropriate mobile phone use and online /social media safety.

As a staff we feel that raising awareness of potential dangers will help to keep everyone safe, healthy and happy during the school day and beyond and you will appreciate that it is necessary for the school to work in partnership with parents and families to do this effectively.

Media Permissions:

Please ensure that the new ‘Media Permissions’ letter has been signed and returned to the school as quickly as possible. Delays in return will prevent us from posting certain Twitter feeds which relates to ‘My School App.’

Ensuring Equality, Inclusion and Health and Wellbeing (HIGIOS4 3.1): PATHS:

As we move forward with our PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Programme in Year 2, our PATHS Co-ordinator, Kristy has made her first visit to classes to team teach learning experiences with Class Teachers.

PATHS is an important part of our School Improvement Plan and Kristy is keen to work with our parents to promote the learning that is taking place across the school. She has organised a Parental Workshop for Wednesday 3rd

October at 6.30pm to share the key principles behind the PATHS Programme. This will be an informal event and it would be lovely to see as many of you there to support the work of the school.

Active Schools:

Our clubs are now up and running and the children have been keen and enthusiastic to take part.

‘I am Me’ Workshops:

Following the successful input last school session, I have invited the ‘I Am Me ’ charity to work with every class on Monday 1st October 2018.

‘I am Me’ provide innovative and engaging sessions which aims to educate young people and the wider community about disabilit ies, bullying, exclusion and hate crime.

StrathGryffe Tennis Taster:

The Strathgryffe Tennis Club have been keen to work with some classes to promote the clubs that they have on offer.

The children in Primary 3 and Primary 4 will enjoy two taster sessions on Tuesday 25 th September and Tuesday 2 nd October. It would be ideal if the children in these year groups were able to come to school prepared with appropriate shoes and clothing. Assemblies:

Assemblies are a great opportunity for us to join together as a whole school community to pray together, share ideas and suggestions, learn from each other and to showcase our learning and achievements.

In October, the following themes will be explored:Value – Team WorkGeneral Themes: House Identity, ‘Above and Beyond,’ Recognition Boards. Fair vs Equal. Religious Themes: Hymn Practice. Gospel Values in relation to our core values through Bible stories and passages. The History of the Rosary.

Since taking up post last session, it has been brought to my attention that many of our children find it challenging to distinguish between fairness and equity. I understand that this can be a challenging concept to grapple with and Be Brave Unleash Creativity Demonstrate Excellence Show/Radiate Enthusiasm

Mrs McPherson and I will spend some time at Assembly looking at the issues around fairness and helping the children to understand that equity is when we ensure that everyone receives what they need/when they need it in order to be successful.

It would be really helpful and we would be grateful if this message could be reinforced at home. The following visual aids will be used at Assembly:

Parent Council Update:

Leadership and Management (HIGIOS4):Leadership of Learning & Leadership of Change 1.2 and 1.3:

Monitoring Calendar:

The SLT work hard to ensure that our children benefit from the the highest standards of learning and teaching.

In September, we monitored: Health and Wellbeing in relation to the GIRFEC (Getting it Right for Every Child) Agenda and the Learning Environment.

In October, our focus will be: Homework, Learning Visits to every class with a focus on Health and Wellbeing and Forecasting Planners.

Learning Provision (HIGIOS4):Family Learning and Partnerships – 2.5 and 2.7:Communication with Parents/Parental Engagement:

Code of Contact with School:

A gentle reminder again this month that whilst we understand that there will be times when parents/carers are keen to speak to either the Principal Teacher or Head Teacher throughout the school day, there may be times when you will be asked to make an appointment to do so. You will also be asked the nature of your concern and where possible, Class Teacher’s are often better placed to deal with your enquiry/concern.

We operate an ‘open doors’ policy but there are times when we are class committed or have other diary commitments and are unable to meet with you without a prior appointment being made.

We thank you in advance for your continued support and understanding with this matter.

Parental Workshops:

Based on Parental feedback we collected last school session, we were keen to offer a range of parental events to highlight important areas in our ‘Health and Well being Improvement Agenda.’

Unfortunately, parental attendance at our ‘Resilience Community Screening’ and Health and Well being (Growth Mindset) workshop was disappointing with only three parents in attendance at each event.

We are happy to take your views on board about how we can move forward with this.

This is an opportunity for you to meet individually with your child’s Class Teacher, discuss your child’s targets and ascertain their progress so far this session.

Appointments will be sent out to you and we would be grateful if you were able to contact the School Office if the appointment does not suit as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide creche facilities on the evening and would ask that if children need to attend that they behave respectfully and responsibly at the event.

Termly Learning in a Nutshell Newsletters:

Before the close of this term, you will have received your Termly ‘Learning in a Nutshell’ Newsletter.

Following consultation with staff and parents, this new format will replace the ‘Termly Newsletter’ which was previously issued at the beginning of a term.

We hope that this format will enable you to engage in a conversation with your child around their learning, the progress they have made and what they view their next steps for success to be.

Learning Provision (HIGIOS 4):Transition Programme:

St. Benedict’s are offering potential Primary 7 parents/families the opportunity to visit their school for an open evening on: Wednesday 3 rd October at 7.00pm. This really is a great opportunity to have a tour of the school and to see the wonderful facilities that our Cluster High School has to offer.

Nursery/Pre -5 Transition:

We were delighted to welcome twenty Nursery children to our school last week as part of our ‘Transition Tasters.’ The children joined Mrs Kaney from Abbey Nursery and Gryffe Manor and they enjoyed taking part in some STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities.

We look forward to welcoming the children over the next few months to promote our school and show everyone what we have to offer.

Fairtrade:

A huge thanks to Mrs J McKay, Mrs Kelly and the Fairtrade Committee for organising our first Fairtrade Coffee morning.

It is always great to offer families and people in the community the chance to come into our school for a cuppa and a blether!

The event was very successful and the Committee raised £110.00 for Fairtrade and an additional £40.00 raised for our Fairtrade School account. This enables the Committee to restock the Tuck Shop.

Marvellous Music!:

The children will benefit from NYCOS ‘Going for Bronze’ Music tuition over the course of October and we welcome Joy Dunlop, our resident Gaelic singing Teacher who is delighted to work with Primaries 2/1, 3/2 and 4 to deliver Gaelic Singing Workshops.

Mrs Anne Hey will work alongside Mrs Steele and the children in Primary 5 as part of a ‘Wartime’ Choir initiative that Houston Primary is also involved in.

Educational Excursions:

Educational excursions are important in helping the children to reinforce key concepts that they have covered in their learning and I am keen for all classes to take part in an excursion out with the Pantomime and possible ‘End of Year’ Summer Trip.

If you are findings the cost of a school trip to be an issue, then please contact me directly at the school and I will be able to offer assistance.

Primary 2/1 will be visiting Lunderston Bay on Monday 1 st October 2018 to explore rock pools and Primary 6 will visit the Tall Ship on Friday 12 th October 2018 as part of their topic on Titanic. Primaries 4 and 5 will visit the National Museum on Thursday 8 th November 2018.

Please note that further details will be provided by your child’s Class Teacher in the form of a letter prior to their excursion.

Successes and Achievements – Raising Attainment and Achievement – 3.2:

Christmas Light Competition Winner! Mark Arthur and his team would like to thank everyone who took part in the annual ‘Christmas Light Competition.’ The judging team were very impressed by the high quality submissions but there could only be one winner.

We are delighted to announce that Darcy in Primary 7 was the lucky winner and her Christmas parcel design will be displayed in lights on Saturday 1 st December 2018 at the official switch on event.

Muy bien Darcy!

Family Acrostic Poem Competition:

The House and Vice Captains have looked through all of their submissions and have selected a few poems as prize winners and it was a difficult decision to make!

We will announce the winners at the End of Term Assembly.

Growth Mindset /Resilience Award:

We made it into the local papers last week when we were presented with a beautiful trophy from a family whose five children used to attend St. Fillan’s many years ago.

The family have many happy memories of the time their children spent in our school and were keen for us to recognise the achievements of individual children who encounter barriers to their learning or who overcome challenges in their life. Yet another example of ‘Above and Beyond!’

The children would like to recognise/nominate their peers to win this award on a termly basis and Mrs McPherson has organised for a nomination box to be placed in the Central Area.

The donated trophy is too large and fragile to send home, but we will purchase smaller trophies that individual children can keep and of course, they will have their photograph taken with the actual trophy! I wonder who will win this term….!
