2 Maintenance Manual 2.1 Foreword

The „Inspection and Maintenance Procedure“described is based on API - recommended practice and Blohm + Voss Oil Tools experience of elevators.

This recommended practice outlines a procedure for methods of inspection and maintenance of elevators to help prevent injury to personnel and irreparable damage to equipment.

2.2 General

Covered in this manual are methods to be employed for the inspection and maintenance of the equipment covered on an item-by-item basis.

2.3 Manufacturer For complete information contact:

2.4 Deterioration of Equipment

Normal wear in course of use will eventually reduce the capability of the elevators. The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects can indicate several deterioration, even impending failure, and prompt attention is required either to remove the elevator from service immediately or to undertake appropriate repair as required.

2.4.1 18 degrees Shoulder Elevators

18 degrees shoulder elevators in heavy use will wear under the repeated loads of the drilling operation. The shoulders gradually become offer less supporting area. If this peening of the elevator load - bearing surface is allowed to continue unchecked long enough, the bore will be reduced by the gradual flow of metal until the elevator is difficult to close and lock around pipe. Worn or damaged shoulder surfaces of elevators are easily corrected by properly machining these surfaces.

2.5 Inspection 2.5.1 Frequency of Inspection 2.5.1.1 Routine - Daily Field Inspection

Field inspection of the elevators in an operating condition should be made by the crew or the supervisor on a regular daily basis.

2.5.1.2 Semi - Annual Field Inspection

A thorough on-the job shutdown inspection should be made on a periodic basis, typically at 6 month intervals, or as special circumstances may require.

2.5.1.3 Critical Load Inspection

Critical loads may be experienced, for example, severe loads, impact loads, etc. If in the judgement of the supervisor a critical load has occurred, or may occur, an on-the-job-shutdown inspection equivalent to the semi-annual field inspection should be carried out. If critical loads are anticipated, the inspection should be conducted prior to and after the occurrence of such loading. If critical loads are unexpectedly encountered, the inspection should be conducted immediately after such an occurrence.

2.5.1.4 Dismantling Inspection

When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantling of the elevator should be made and an inspection in a suitable equipped facility should be carried out.

2.5.2 Methods of Inspection 2.5.2.1 Routine Daily Field Inspection Procedure

Elevators should be inspected on a regular daily basis for cracks, elongations, and other signs of wear, corrosion, or overloading. If any elevator found to show cracks, excessive wear etc., the elevator should be removed from service.

All elevators should be examined to determine if the latch and the latchlock mechanism are functioning properly. Hinge pins, latch lug surfaces and swivel suspension contact surfaces should be checked. It should be ensured that all safety devices are installed (including the securing rings).

2.5.3 Semi - Annual Field Inspection The periodic or critical load inspection in the field should be conducted by the crew with the supervisor.

2.5.3.1 Cleaning

For the periodic or critical load inspection, all foreign matter should be removed from the surface to be inspected.

2.5.3.2 Dismantling and inspection

Dismantling of the elevator is required if a detailed inspection is necessary. 18 degrees Shoulder Elevators:

Inspect the uniformity and depth of wear. Uneven wear or worn recesses of 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) or more requires refacing of surface. Hinge Pins and springs should be carefully inspected visually for excess wear and obvious weakness.

2.5.4 Dismantling Inspection

Generally the elevators inspection should be carried out immediately when

the equipment is returned to the base, warehouse etc. and is to be carried out prior to its being sent on the next job. The elevator (including Latch, Hinge and Latch Pin and Swivel Suspension)

should be dismantled and inspected in a suitable equipped facility for excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformations. Corrections should be made in accordance with recommendations, which

can be obtained from Blohm + Voss Oil Tools.

2.5.4.1 Cleaning

Before inspection, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease oil, scale,

etc. should be removed from the areas to be inspected by a suitable method.

2.5.4.2 Measuring of Wear

Hinge pins, latch pins and socket holes are not normally measured for wear

in the field. When it becomes apparent that the hinge or latch pins are loosing the

elevator should be dismantled for general engineering check up.

2.6 Maintenance of Repair

2.6.1 Preventive Maintenance A regular preventative maintenance program should be established for all

elevators. Written maintenance should be given to the crew or maintenance

personnel. Care should be taken that instruction plates, and warning labels are not missing, damaged or illegible.

2.6.2 Proper Repair If repairs are not performed by Blohm + Voss Oil Tools, such repairs should be made in accordance with methods or procedure approved by Blohm + Voss Oil Tools. Minor cracks or defects, which may be removed without reducing safety or operation of the elevator, can be removed by grinding. Following the repair, the part should again be inspected by an appropriate method to insure that the defect has been completely removed. Welding is not recommended without consulting Blohm + Voss Oil Tools.

2.6.3 Beyond Repair If the elevator is defective beyond repair, it should be destroyed

immediately.
