Elevator body and hydraulic closing system

When the elevator is open, the drill pipe can be placed in the elevator. When the elevator is closed, the elevator sends a hydraulically signal. The body takes the load through the bushing system and transfer it to the elevator links.

Bushing SystemExchangeable bushings allow to run the elevator for different tubular and sizes, see chapter „Size Components“.

Opening and Closing Mechanics

Body and latch of the elevator are actuated by hydraulic cylinders. The cylinders are installed in the hydraulic areas of the elevator in a protected way.

Closing signal unit

When the bodies are completely closed and latched, the closing signal in the elevator is actuated.

Couplings

Screw couplings male and female with connecting thread NPT – 3/8“ inner thread. All hydraulic connections have a bushing and a plug.

Safety equipment

Closing signalWhen the latch is completely closed, line “C” triggers a hydraulic pressure signal of 110 to 120 bar as a feedback signal, indicating elevator closed.

Improper / Unsafe Use

The VES-HCL350 Elevator must only be used for the designated purpose. When using the VES-HCL350 Elevator, the load of 350 sh tons must never be exceeded.

Identification

The identification area clearly identifies the Elevator area (manufacturer, type, material, part number, serial number, date of manufacture). It is important to keep this information ready for the purpose of service and repair work.

Functioning

The HCL-350 elevator is designed in 2 halves of about the same weight for proper balance and easier opening and closing. Itis equipped with a latch and a latch lock combination. When the elevator is open, the pipe will be placed in the bushings. The HCL-350 elevatorhas exchangeable bushings, which allows the elevator to run with different types of pipes and pipe didameters.

1. Elevator is tilted to the pipe.2. Elevator will close on close command.3. Once the elevator is closed, latched and locked, the

driller will get a feedback signal stating this.4. Now the driller can pick up the pipe.5. Opening the elevator works vice versa

Installation of the hydraulics

Ensure that the controls are designed in such a way that, after a hydraulic or electric power black out, the actual situation of the valves doe not change. No movement in any part of the tool is allowed after the power, either electric or hydraulic or both, comes up again. The tool and load should always remain in a safe state.

Ensure that there are valves installed which allow the tool to be insolated between the hydraulic power rig lines and the tool. This is to prevent to have to shut down all rig power lines or HPU’s in case of maintenance, emergency or otherwise.

NOTE: The elevator is filled with hydraulic oil at delivery. Ensure it is filled when installing the elevator.

NOTE: Ensure to purge the air from the elevator before commencing work by opening and closing the elevator 10 x.

Safety

• Make sure that ALL hydraulic lines are isolated (disconnected) before any work is carried out on the elevator.

• It is recommended to have the elevator operated by the driller. • The elevator is activated with a remote control valve, which may be actuated by hand or foot

depending on the type of valve and/or HMI-interface. • The driller (and or the floor man) must coordinate operation of the elevator and slips/spider so

one tool is engaged around the tubular before the other is disengaged. Thus, one or both tools continuously suspend the tubular during all stages of pipe handling operations.

Operation Running in

1. The elevator is lowered around the tooljoint and the command “close elevator” is given.2. A signal is given to the driller when the VES-HCL elevator is closed. 3. The pipe is made up.4. The driller lifts the elevator in order to pick up the load. 5. The slips/spider is commanded to “open”, simultaneously, the driller picks up the elevator while

the driller raises the spider/slips.6. The driller lowers the string into the hole.7. The driller sets the spider/slips. 8. Open the elevator and pick up a new section of pipe.

Operation Tripping out

1. The elevator is lowered around the tooljoint and the command “close elevator” is given.2. Observe the elevator is closed when the “elevator closed indication signal” is visible.3. Raise the spider/slips. 4. Pull out the string.5. Close the spider/slips6. Release the stringweight from the elevator by lowering it slightly7. Now running out the stand or joint. 8. When the pipe is running out, pick up the stand and set it back.9. Open the elevator and guide pipe out.10. Lower elevator and pick up the string at rigfloor.

Bushing wear/bore code check

Wear of Equipment

Normal wear of bushings, bore and elevator ears caused by usage will eventually reduce the load capacity of elevators. The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects can indicate severe deterioration and even failures. Prompt attention is required either to remove the elevator from service immediately or to undertake appropriate repair.A wear condition in its early stages is common. Frequently, it results in a tool joint sticking to the elevator.Elevators showing hammer marks around the top of the bore should be closely examined to determine whether it is the elevator, the tool joint or both are faulty. To indentify the conditions of the 18° Elevator taper gauges are available for all B+V Elevators (P/N 600018). A set of gauges consists of an 18° gauge (GOOD) and a 15° gauge (BAD).

How to check the bushing the correct way

1. Fit the gauge to the inner bore of the bushing or the bore.2. Push the gauge against the bushing and start to move the gauge downwards

until the chamfer touched the 18° shoulder or to the bore.3. Check the result as follows:

Check of results

1. Using the GOOD gauge: If the gauge sits directly on the bushing without showing any clearance between gauge and bushing, the bushing is OK.

2. If the gauge shows space between the gauge and the bushing, you have to check with the second gauge.

3. Using the BAD 15° gauge: If the gauge shows any clearance between gauge and bushing, the bushing is OK.

4. If the gauge sits directly on the bushing without showing any space between gauge and bushing, take the elevator out of service.

WARNING: If the tApeR Is less thAN 15° tAke the elevAtoR out of seRvIce oR exchANGe the bushING.If the tApeR Is betWeeN 18° ANd 15°, Reduce the elevAtoRs loAd cApAcIty to 90%. NeveR use the elevAtoR WIthout A bushING.
