MATCH UP: In the fi rst week of PSAC crossover games, Bloomsburg faces

the Eagles of Clarion University. Th e two teams have not met since the 2007,

when the Huskies evened the all-time series at 4-4-1 with a 52-10 victory.

Bloomsburg-Clarion is one of the oldest matchups in the PSAC, with the fi rst

contest hitting the fi eld in 1934. Th at game ended in a 0-0 tie, thanks to, in

part, strong rains and an exceptionally muddy fi eld.

THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is

in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. With the Huskies,

he has a 144-50-1 (.741) record and has the most wins in school history. For

his career, Hale is 184-63-1 and his winning percentage of .744 is ranked

among the top 20 active coaches in Division II. Hale has led BU to six playoff

appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC

East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine

times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the

2000 season.

Currently in his fi fth year as Clarion’s head coach, Jay Foster (Plymouth State

‘85) has a 12-33 record with the Golden Eagles. After winning only four games

in his fi rst three seasons, Foster turned things around in 2009, posting a 8-3

record on the year, Clarion’s fi rst winning record since 2002.

Th e Clarion off ense returns 8 starters and 15 lettermen from a unit that averaged

343.7 yards and 28.6 points per game. Nine starters and 21 lettermen return for a

Clarion defense that was the key to Clarion’s team success in 2009, limiting opponents

to 302.9 yards/game and 21.7 pts/game.

Sophomore Eric Coxon will start at quarterback for the Golden Eagles, having

played in four games in 2008 and completed 2 of 8 passes for 10 yards. Coxon looks to

replace Tyler Huether who passed for 2,242 yards and 10 td’s, and also ran for 8 td’s.

Senior all-purpose back Alfonso Hoggard is ready to handle the pigskin in a variety

of ways in 2010. Th e PSAC-West “Off ensive Player of the Year”, Hoggard is ready for

his fi nal campaign after leading the PSAC in rushing (1,046 yards – 104.6 p/g), rush-

ing td’s (17), overall td’s (19), points scored (118) and all-purpose yards (1,798) last

year. Also expecting to see plenty of time in the backfi eld are John Fuhrer and Jerico

Weiztel. Fuhrer ran for 200 yards and 2 td’s a year ago, while Weiztel transferred to

Clarion from Florida where he played baseball the last two seasons.

Th e Golden Eagles have an outstanding receiving corps returning in 2010 led by

All-Region performer Jacques Robinson, a fi rst team PSAC-West choice in 2009, who

was #2 in the PSAC last year in receptions with 70 catches for 819 yards and 5 td’s.

Returner Craig Bunney caught 34 passes for 459 yards last year, while starter Matt

Ward grabbed 27 aerials for 310 yards and 1 td.

Clarion’s “O” line will return four linemen with starting experience and a host of

talented players. Two-year starting guard Vince Bazzone has moved to center and

will be leading the “O” line. He will be joined up front by three-year starter Danielson

Gilbert and two-year letterwinner and part-time starter Gerald Hudson at guard, with

two-year starter Elijah Morres at tackle. Quality depth abounds in letterwinners Eli

Rupert and Bob Beidl, and a host of red-shirt freshmen.

Up front the Eagles feature All PSAC-West lineman Ben Maund and returning

starters Barrington Morrison, John Hackel, David Dunn and Kory Kusick.

Senior linebacker Joe Fox is a three year starter and an All PSAC-West choice in

2009, who was third on the team last year with 62 tackles, plus had 9 tfl ’s and 3 sacks.

In three seasons he has collected 156 hits, 25 tfl ’s and 5 sacks.

Senior strong safety Nick Sipes will anchor an athletic and tough secondary for

the Golden Eagles. Sipes was voted an HM FB Gazette All-American and fi rst team

PSAC-West choice after leading the Golden Eagles with 112 tackles plus 12 tfl ’s and 6

sacks in 2009.

Senior placekicker Robert Mamula, who connected on 12 of 16 fi eld goals and

25 of 28 PAT’s, returns to lead the special teams. He also hit on 8 of 12 fi eld goals in

2008 and in three seasons has booted 26 of 43 fi eld goal tries. He has also made 61 of

68 PAT’s and has 139 kicking points at Clarion.

Nathan Conway returns as the Eagle punter in 2010. Last year he averaged 37.9

yards per punt, booted 9 inside the 20 and had a long punt of 54 yards.

CLARION—Jamar Brittingham rushed for a

game-high 132 yards and scored three touch-

downs and backup fullback Stefan Adams

rushed for a career-high 111 yards and two

scores to lead the Bloomsburg to a 52-10 win

over Clarion.

Th e 52 points scored by the Huskies, who

snapped a two-game losing streak, were the

most for the team since getting 63 against Lock

Haven in 2005.

After a scoreless fi rst period, the Hus-

kies got on the board fi rst when Jon Koenig

connected on a 25-yard fi eld goal capping an

80-yard drive. Clarion tied the game at 3-3 on

the ensuing series when Robert Mamula hit a

37-yard fi eld goal. Brittingham then scored on

consecutive possessions for the Huskies going

in from three yards and one yard out to give the

Huskies a 17-3 halftime lead.

Brittingham reached the endzone for the

third time in the game on the Huskies second

possession of the half when he scored from four

yards out for a 24-3 advantage. Clarion cut the

defi cit to 24-10 when Tyler Huether hit Pierre

Odom with a 29-yard scoring pass with 6:53 left

in the third.

Th e Huskies then mounted a 54-yard drive

with quarterback Dan Latorre capping the

drive with a one-yard run for a 31-10 lead. Th e

Huskies started to put the game out of reach

when Adams, the backup fullback with tailback

speed, ran 59-yards, a career-long, for a touch-

down late in the third period. In the fourth

period, Latorre added a 13-yard touchdown run

and Adams capped the day for Bloomsburg with

a seven-yard scoring run.

Adams fi nished with 111 yards on just

seven carries as the Huskies totaled 551 yards of

total off ense. Defensively, the Huskies inter-

cepted four Clarion passes, including two by

linebacker Michael Varanavage.

HUSKIES IN THE PLAYOFFS: BU has made the NCAA Division II playoff s in

three of the past fi ve seasons and seven times overall. Th e Huskies claim a 7-7 overall

playoff record, including a 5-2 mark games played at Redman Stadium.

Th e Huskies also reached the NCAA playoff s after the 1985, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2005,

2006 and 2008 seasons. In 2000, Bloomsburg went 12-3 and advanced to the NCAA

championship game, eventually losing to Delta State in the title contest. Th e team

reached the fi nals after rallying from a 19-point defi cit against UC-Davis in the

national semi-fi nals to post a 58-48 win.

DECADES OF SUCCESS: After starting the decade 0-2, the 2000s brought

Bloomsburg consistent success, as the team posted a 92-26 (.780) record over 10

years. Th e 1990s were not as generous to the Huskies, who still compiled a 62-45-1

(.579) ledger in that span.

WHAT’S THE RUSH? In his fi rst collegiate start, Franklyn Quiteh rushed 35 times

for 140 net yards. Th e last Husky to rush for 35 attempts was Jamar Brittingham,

who performed the feat twice in 2005, fi rst against IUP (Sep. 24) and later versus

Kutztown (Oct. 8). Th at same year, Brittingham set the Bloomsburg single-season

record for rushing yards (2,260), averaging 188.3 yards per game.

A GOOD OMEN: Th e last time the Huskies lost a season opener was in 2006. Th at

year, Bloomsburg recovered to win 12 straight and advance to the NCAA national

semifi nals.

WHO’S NEXT? PHILADELPHIA? For the second game in a row, the Huskies will

face off against Eagles. With any luck, they will fare better against the Midas-touched

“Golden” variety of Clarion.

MIND YOUR Q’s: Across all NCAA divisions, Franklyn Quiteh and Mike

Quintans are the only starting and backup pair of running-backs on any team’s depth

chart whose last names begin with “Q.”

UNLUCKY BOUNCE: Last week, Ashland’s blocked punt recovery in the BU

endzone marked the fi rst time in over a decade that the Huskies allowed a touchdown

to score on their own punt. Th e last time a punt was returned on a Bloomsburg punt

was on November 6, 1999, when Mansfi eld’s Levi Green returned a batted ball from

55 yards.

ASHLAND, OH—Quarterback Taylor Housewright threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ashland Uni-

versity to a 24-14 win over Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Th e Huskies opened the game’s scoring in the fi rst period on its fi rst possession of the season. After the Bloomsburg

defense forced a three and out for the Eagles on the game’s opening drive, the Huskies took over at the Ashland 40 yard line

and moved 25 yards in seven plays. On the drive quarterback Pat Carey (Loyalsock, Loyalsock Twp.) completed his fi rst colle-

giate pass for 18 yards to Matt Marchioni (Wilmington, DE, Brandywine)to keep the drive alive. When the drive stalled, Dan

Fisher (Harrisburg, Central Dauphin)connected on a 32-yard fi eld goal try for a 3-0 lead.

Ashland tied the score on its next possession moving to the Huskies 17-yard line before settling for a 34-yard fi eld

goal from Gregg Berkshire.

Th e Eagles took the lead for good in the game in the second quater with the help of its special teams. After pinning

the Huskies deep in their own territory, Ashland blocked Bloomsburg’s punt from inside the fi ve yard line with Anthony Ca-

passo recovering the end zone for a touchdown giving the home team a 10-3 lead.

Bloomsburg got three points back late in the second period after marching from its own 32 yard line to the Ashland

21 yard line before settling for a 38-yard fi eld goal from Fisher.

Ashland extended its lead to 17-6 with the help of a big play from Housewright. After the Eagles were pinned back

inside its fi ve-yard line following a Huskies punt, Housewright hit Joe Horn with a 96-yard touchdown pass to put the Huskies

in a deep hole.

Th e Huskies cut into the Ashland lead in the fourth period putting together a 13-play, 90-yard drive. Freshmen tail-

back Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pocono Mountain West) carried seven times for 40 yards on the drive, including the fi nal

fi ve yards for the score. Quiteh then added a two-point running conversion to make it a 17-14 game with 3:33 to go.

On Ashland’s fi rst play on the ensuing drive, Housewright ran 53 yards on the fi rst play putting the ball at the Huskies

14 yard line and eff ectively ending any chance for a Bloomsburg comeback. Housewright capped off the day later in the drive

hitting Mike Knueven with a fi ve-yard scoring pass.

Housewright fi nished 16-26 for 248 yards and no interceptions, while also rushing four times for 65 yards. For

Bloomsburg, Quiteh carried 35 times for 140 yards and one score, while Pat Carey was 14-28 with two interceptions for 150

yards. Defensively Mike Varanavage (Philadelphia, Archbishop Ryan) made 10 tackles to lead the Huskies.

Bloomsburg’s four-game losing streak is the longest of Danny Hale’s

career. Th e previous long had been three his fi rst season with the

Huskies in 1993. Th e longest in his fi ve years at West Chester was only

two, during his fi rst season there in 1984. Put in perspective, having

one losing streak of this length is standard for Bloomsburg head foot-

ball coaches. Coach Hale’s eight predecessors dating back to Walter

Blair (1957-1963) all had at least one losing streak of four games.

Th e Huskies have won ten straight home openers dating back to a 47-

37 loss to New Haven in 1999. Danny Hale’s record in home openers

at Bloomsburg is 13-4.

Th e Huskies all-time record in 36 seasons at Redman Stadium is 119-

65-4, with Danny Hale’s record in 17 years 75-19-1.

THE HUSKY OFFENSE: Junior Pat Carey, a transfer from D-I FCS

institution Lafayette College, replaces four-year starter Dan Latorre under

center. Carey threw for 150 yards in his collegiate debut, connecting on 14 of

28 attempts.

Th ough Franklyn Quiteh started the season No. 4 on the depth chart, he

shown like an experienced starter at Ashland, taking the ball 35 times in his

college debut. Matt Cox came out of the backfi eld to make a single 8-yard

reception in the opener. Mike Quintans backs up the tailbacks.

Senior tight end Ben Weaber demonstrated skilled hands at Ashland,

collecting a team-high four passes for 36 yards. Classmate Cory Stiger led

the receivers and brought down three balls of his own to pick up 41 yards,

while Tyler Guise, who missed last season with an injury, caught two for 17

yards. Matt Marchioni and Kyle Jackson each caught a pair to round out

Th e off ensive line features a number of returning starters this season. Daryl Kurtz at tackle and Pat Casey at guard picked up

where they left off last year. Chris Steck served as center for the Huskies, while the starting line at Ashland was rounded out by

Kenny Orlando, who moved over from the defensive line, and Brandon Allen who returned after sitting out last season.

BLOOMSBURG DEFENSE: Th e Huskies return four linesmen who fi lled starting roles last season, including Marcus

Zimmerman, Todd Givler, John Pettine and Dave Huot. Clarence Robinson fi lled Pettine’s starting spot to open the 2010

campaign, but expect Hale to utilize all his linesmen this year. Joining that group in the rotation will be Ryan Olaf, who moves

from linebacker to the line, Dave Onorato, Shaun Moore, Marc Francola and Mike Schlauch. Also, look for contributions from

Chris Kennedy and Josh Chromiak, who returns from injury.

LB’s Mike Varanavage and Th omas McFarland, combined to make over 160 tackles a year ago and made 13 in the season

opener. In the middle, Jarrett Pidgeon had six stops in his starting role for the Huskies. Th e Huskies also have added depth at the

position with Ryan Feldman, Sean Clift, Jeff Owsley and Pat Michael.

All-PSAC East selection Oscar Rivera returns as DB, while the Huskies also feature seniors Alex Landis and Dan Oliver and

junior Vince Browning as starters. Rivera and Landis were both starters last season and combined to make over 100 tackles

last season, while Browning and Oliver combined for 75 tackles as back-ups. Joining the group will be Justin Rivera, Dan

Haverstock, Mark Scattene and Terrell Oglesby.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Jared Shannon and Dan Fisher

continue to battle for responsibility of the kickoff s and

fi eld goal duties for the Huskies. Drew Snyder and

Fisher are competing for the punting duties, though

Fisher handled them exclusively at Ashdown. Specialist

Ian Murray will do the long-snapping for special

teams. Tyler Guise is the starting punt returner,

though he was unable to break free in three attempts at

Ashland. Wallace Jamison collected 70 yards in three

kick returns, and will likely continue in this role as the

season progresses.

HEAD COACH DANNY HALE

Danny Hale, one of the winningest coaches in all of Division II, will begin his 18th season at the helm of the

Huskies in 2010. Hale also spent fi ve years as head coach at West Chester University.

Prior to West Chester, Hale was an off ensive line and defensive coordinator at Colgate from 1981 to 1983. Prior

to Colgate, Hale was the off ensive line coach at Bucknell from 1975-80 and was defensive coordinator/lineback-

er coach at Vermont in 1974.

Hale is a graduate of West Chester, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Health and Physical Educa-

tion in 1968 and 1973. He was an all-conference pick at West Chester and earned the team’s most valuable

player in the 1967 State Championship game, while also lettering three times for the track and fi eld team. He is

a member of the West Chester Football Hall of Fame and the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Hale is one of the winningest active coaches in Division II and looks to climb the ranks even further this season...
