Described as a "breath of fresh air on the world jazz stage," Liz Tobias comes to us directly from the Sydney Opera where she is performing for the Ella Fitzgerald 100th birthday celebration as part of this Ella Tribute International Tour. In a moving celebration of Australian music established and emerging artists unite to pay homage to the icons of home grown jazz. Hear a range of genres within the jazz echelon from swing to fusion to contemporary. Expect repertoire from artists including Allan Browne, Georgia Lee, Don Burrows, Kerrie Biddell, Vince Jones, Alan Lee and more, re-interpreted for big band jazz orchestra.

Music Director - Andrew Murray Award winning bandleader, educator and composer Andrew Murray returns to Stonnington Jazz to arrange and direct The Australian Jazz Legacy show with his band ATM15.

Special guests

Sandy Evans – Tenor and Soprano Saxophone Saxophonist, composer, multi-award winner (including ARIA, AIR, APRA and Bell Awards), PhD Graduate and Order of Australia Medallist, Sandy has cemented her place as an icon of Australian contemporary and improvised music.

Bob Sedergreen – Piano Highly respected elder of the Australian music community Bob’s inimitable piano playing is part of modern jazz folklore. Having appeared in concert with all time greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Milt Jackson, Bob has shaped the next generation of Australian artists leading the Stonnington Youth Jazz Initiative and working as a jazz educator.

Kristin Berardi – Vocals Brisbane-based vocalist and composer returns to Stonnington Jazz for one appearance only. Her extraordinary vocal talents have seen her receive multiple ARIA, Bell and APRA awards, win the Shure International Jazz Vocal competition and the National Jazz Prize.

Nat Grant – Vibraphone PhD graduate, percussionist and freelance artist Nat Grant has worked as a performer and composer across the puppetry, theatre, film, animation and dance mediums.

Thando – Vocals As one of Melbourne’s most exciting new artists, Thando’s incredible voice and stage presence has seen her tread the boards in stage productions including Dream Girls and The Color Purple.

Olivia Chindamo – Vocals 2016 Bell Award “Young Jazz Artist of the Year” winner and recipient of James Morrison’s Generation In Jazz Scholarship, Olivia represents the new guard of Australian jazz vocals.

Theo Carbo – Guitar Winner of the Pat Gorrigan Scholarship, Theo recorded his debut jazz album at age 13 at the James Morrison studios Sydney in 2014.

For one special evening, two of Australia’s most exciting Ethiopian jazz ensembles transport you on an international jazz journey. Dance all night to hypnotic African influenced grooves. The Black Jesus Experience performs an irresistibly danceable blend of traditional Ethiopian song with 21

st century grooves, hip-hop and funk. The eight-piece

ensemble have toured internationally, including appearances at Glastonbury Festival and collaborated with the father of Ethio-Jazz, Mulata Astatke, for their recent album Cradle of Humanity. Papa Chango deliver subterranean trance-like movements of afro-funk mashed up with psychedelic guitar lines and scatterings of broken brass. Featuring their newest member Nat Grant on vibraphone and percussion, the band let their Ethio-jazz influences take hold on their new album Lost Moon of Bellaris that explores the darkness of space and the lightness of life.

NYLIPIDGI: MONASH ART ENSEMBLE Album Launch

The ancestor creates his land again, makes spears, hunts, weaves, dissolves into the wind and leaves us in the form of a plover.

The Monash Art Ensemble – a project of Monash University’s Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music – join forces with the Young Wagilak Group of South East Arnhem Land to premiere a new multi-movement suite by Paul Grabowsky titled Nyilipidgi (ABC Records).

Blending the musical heritage of Australia’s first people with contemporary composition and improvisation, this collaboration celebrates the reconciliatory power of music and features master musicians Daniel Ngukurr Boy Wilfred and David Yipinni Wildred.
