Introduction

Record Group 166 is comprised of photographs and illustrations used in the publication of various Tennessee Blue Books, from the year 1966 to 1996. These illustrations are of State and Federal officials representing Tennessee, and of various historical subjects in Tennessee’s history.

These materials were transferred to the State Library and Archives from the Division of Publications, Secretary of State’s Office, State of Tennessee in 1996.

The completed collection occupies approximately 1.5 cubic feet of shelf space.

Scope and Content Note

Record Group 166, Blue Book Illustrations contains numerous photographs and drawings used in the publication of several Tennessee Blue Books, beginning with the year 1966 during the Buford Ellington Administration. The Tennessee Blue Book is the official handbook of Tennessee government, and is published every two years by the Secretary of State of Tennessee.

The subjects of these photographs include cabinet officers for gubernatorial administrations, members of Congress representing Tennessee, notable Tennesseans and historic sites.

Many of the illustrations in this collection were used in the Bicentennial Edition of the Tennessee Blue Book, published in 1996.

Those interested in the biography of the state officials represented in this collection should consult the Blue Book corresponding with that subject’s administration. Several gubernatorial administrations represented in Record Group 166 had several individuals occupying the same Commissioner position, therefore reliance on the Blue Book for information is essential to avoid confusion. This is especially true of the administration of Gov. Lamar Alexander.

Historical subjects found in this record group include the "Hermitage," "Polk Place," the Alvin C. York Grist Mill, the Chickamauga/Chattanooga Military Battlefields, the Hunt/Phelan House in Memphis, “Graceland,” Beale Street, the Fontaine House in Memphis, Christ Church located at Rugby, Tenn., the Great Smoky Mountains and many others.

Researchers using this collection should also refer to Record Group 238, Tennessee Blue Book - Bicentennial Edition, History of Tennessee Slides for more illustrations used in the publication of the Tennessee Blue Book.
