l by the water

l in the water

l on the water

We’ve also identified activitiesthat you can do yourself, wherethere are organised groups tojoin, and where special support is offered. We’ve alsohighlighted some ideas forvolunteering if you’d like to give back to nature and thecommunity.

The West of England covers fourunitary authorities - so we’ve alsocolour-coded where the activitiesare to make it easier to see:

Many of the organisations listed are also available on the online platform Well Aware(www.wellaware.org.uk).

Picture yourself by a calm river ona warm day. Perhaps you’rewatching a kingfisher dartaround, or a heron stoicallyhunting. Perhaps you want tojump in yourself. Does this simpleimage bring you some joy?

Being outdoors by water is wellcelebrated in the arts for itsbeauty, reflection andconnection. But this isn’t justnostalgic – scientific researchshows how beneficial theoutdoor water environment is forour health and wellbeing too.

Spending just half an hour ingreen spaces can reduce theprevalence of depression andhigh blood pressure1.

Blue spaces such as lakes, oceans and rivers offerimportant therapeutic benefitsincluding tranquility, contemplation and spiritualconnection2.

Active exercise in these blueenvironments is hugely beneficialto our health and wellbeing3.

Open water swimming (brrr!)can reduce depression andchronic pain related to surgery4.

Aquatic exercise can reducebehavioural and psychologicalsymptoms of dementia (BPSD)and improve psychological wellbeing in those living withmoderate to severe dementia5.

Volunteering in nature hasimportant wellbeing benefitstoo – including social integrationand support, which is soimportant in today’s societywhere people are increasinglysocially isolated and sufferingfrom loneliness6.

We invite you to discover someof these benefits for yourself –whether you want to jump rightin or quietly be!

I first learned to sail during mycareer at sea with the MerchantNavy. I am now retired and haveParkinsons disease, which limitsmy mobility, and I am no longerquick enough to duck under theboom of the sail boat. I heardabout All Aboard Sailing in July2017. They have speciallydesigned boats where the boomgoes over the top of your head– great for those with reducedmobility. I joined All Aboard inAugust 2017 and sailed nearlyevery week through the winterto July 2018.

My favourite aspect of sailing isbeing on the water and gettinglost in the moment – it is a realstress release and has that feelgood factor. I also became moreactive walking to and from theclub. My advice to others is toget out there and do it!

6

Caroline’s StoryI suffered from depression andheard about open waterswimming at Henleaze Lake. Iswam throughout the summerand enjoyed it very much. Myfavourite aspects were touchingthe earth and being in the openas well as the quiet solitude of thelake. The staff were also very kindand even lent me a swimmingcostume when I forgot mine.

It was very therapeutic beingbarefoot and in touch with theearth and the peacefulness ofthe still water. It was also nice tobe able to swim at my own pace, which you can’t do when you’rein lanes at a swimming pool.

A lot of people would prefer tostay in at home – but I would sayyou regret the things you don’tdo, not the things you do!
