CD Review ...............

DR. DUPREES LOVE SHOPStevie DuPree and the Delta FlyersSoulbilly Music GroupHouston blues singer and songwriter Stevie Dupree and hisband, the Delta Flyers deliver 12 original tracks of Texas, Saturdaynight roadhouse blues on Dr. Duprees Love Shop. The Delta Flyers, consisting of Travis Stephenson on electric, acoustic and slide guitar, Quentin Q Calva on bass, and SteveBundrick on drums, provide a solid foundation, spiced up withsome great guest appearances. Derek OBrien drops in to openup the CD with a rousing slide guitar performance on the firsttrack, Broke Up. Ms. Marcia Ball graces us with her signaturepiano styling on First Dance, a jumping dance tune with stand-out sax. On the title track, guest vocalists Alice Stewart and LisaTingle take turns with Stevie. Nick Connolly steps in on keyboardsto keep up the Texas blues vibe. Youve heard the legendary saxophone of Kaz Kazanoffaccompanying Bobby Parker, Pinetop Perkins, Phillip Walker,W.C .Clark, Kim Wilson, Smokin Joe Kubek, Ronnie Earl and theBroadcasters, Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, Marcia Ball,Angela Strehli and a long list of other blues greats, on countlessalbums. On this CD, he not only plays the tenor sax on most ofthe tracks, teaming up with John Mills (baritone sax) and AlGomez (trumpet) as the Texas Horns, but he produces the album, embellishes it with his fine harmonica on several songs, andjoins in on vocal harmonies. Overall, Dr. Duprees Love Shop has a lot to offer. Some of theother memorable tunes are the amusing and well-produced HardAct to Follow, St. Pauls Bottoms, and My Angel of Mercy, starring DuPrees vocals, great keyboards, and just the rightamount of guitar. ~ DM

Rick Holstrom with NathanJames at New Village Arts

in Carlsbad January 13Guitarist/singer/songwriter Rick Holstrom makes a rare San Diego County appearance with his band January 13 from 7 pm-11 pm at New Village Arts in Carlsbad, an intimate theater with a well-stocked bar. Holmstrom has been a mainstay in the Southern California blues scene for many years, having played with James Harman and Rod Piazza among many others. For the last severalyears, he has been a member of the legendary Mavis Staples' band, traveling the world over. Hehas released several CDs as a leader, the most recent being Cruel Sunrise, a two-disc set oforiginals and stunning interpretations of instrumental classics. Kicking off the show is San Diego's own Nathan James & the Rhythm Scratchers, whoreleased What You Make of It on the Delta Groove label earlier this year. Ticket information is atwww.newvillagearts.org.

Say it Aint So!Anthology &

4th & B Close!Anthology has sadly closed its doors! The

Little Italy venue is the second in a month in San Diego to shut down after theowners of downtowns long-running concertvenue, 4th and B recently lost their lease. Just over the past three years the state-of-the-artAnthology has featured acts ranging through allgenres of music, including the late Hubert Sumlin, the iconic Bettye Lavette, Candye Kane,Parliament-Funkadelic, Leo Kottke, Los Lobos,Meshell Ndegeocello, Bela Fleck, Booker T. Jones,Albert Lee, John Popper, Joan Osborne, the JazzCrusaders and dozens of others. Im grateful I witnessed several great shows

there, most recently, Mark Hummels terrific Little Walter Tribute where they also recorded live for Blind Pig Records... It will be abittersweet memoir. The photo above lt-rt: Charlie Baty, Mark Hummel, James Harman, Billy Boy Arnold, Sugar Ray Norcia and CharlieMusselwhite. Its a great loss to the San Diego music community to hear that Anthology is closing, especially after hearing last month about 4th& B, SoundDiego managing editor Eric Page said. Anthology was a unique venue to San Diego, showcasing jazz and blues artiststhat may in some cases now have a hard time finding a venue to perform at in San Diego.
