Meanwhile I was helping Robert with practice cutting tenons for his small table us- ing the beast with a very blunt blade. The club had recently bought a set of ring and open-ended spanners that came in a foam case so I simply rearranged a panel saw and then screwed the foam case on to the inside of our tool cupboard. This means that the spanners are visible, easily accessible and it obvious where they go and when they are missing. The big BONUS is that we can see where they should GO BACK to! . Presidents Report

The last few meetings have seen some more interesting activi-ties for our Club, requests for display Jewellery boxes and comple-tion of the croquet mallets from an earlier display at the Mid Moun-tains Expo at Lawson.

Tuesday Our Tuesday meeting had a demonstration of box joints by Phil Tonks using a homemade jig. Phil also showed the commercial jigs (see photo) and the advantages and disad-vantages of each. After Phil’s initial demonstration using our triton router table we (led by Safety officer Ray) suggested a few changes to increase user safety. This included limiting the travel of the jig and placing covers just after the router bit to reduce bit exposure during operation. I then made my own set of box joints using this setup and it worked very smoothly with all joints fitting tightly. Robert also made his box (see photo, next page) including cutting the groove for the base to slide into using the supplied Gifkins router bit. Meanwhile others worked on the croquet mallets, which are or very near comple-tion. Actually, I think they may have been delivered already.

Saturday

This meeting had Phil Tonks outside putting four square faces on the shaft on the croquet mallet handles. However, he had a small hiccup and severely splintered the shaft. Craig Hubbard suggested a few simple modifications to the jig and it worked well. Craig was also taking a prospective member through some basic wood turning on our lathe. Jan was finishing the faces on the croquet mallets using some UHMW material (ultra high molecular weight.), bread board material gluing it on with poly glue, which I am lead to believe is satisfactory for this environment. Meanwhile I was helping Robert with practice cutting tenons for his small table us-ing the beast with a very blunt blade. The club had recently bought a set of ring and open-ended spanners that came in a foam case so I simply rearranged a panel saw and then screwed the foam case on to the inside of our tool cupboard. Tuesday The October meeting will look at making box joints using a number of the September Tuesday workshop will feature Doug Cox once again showing us how to”(wait for this) make pinned mortise and Tenon joints on curved timber.

Saturday

As per Tuesday night. We have made a sample display box for a lady, Carole Hampshire, who lives in the upper

mountains, but she has been very busy and has not had time to view the sample. As I am away till late October and

then away again on the 27th October, President Phil has the box and I have advised her who to get in touch with, and

to make arrangements to come and have a look.

AGM TUESDAY 20TH, It’s the AGM. Please make sure you read the agenda and attend. We will have a tool sale after the AGM and election of the new Club executive. A copy of last years AGM minutes are included in this newsletter.

Also, a lucky door prize for a lucky attendee at the AGM is on offer, so please come along, we do not bite!!

After the Annual general meeting, a tool sale will be held, where all members are invited to bring along some tools which they no longer require. (Club will take a percentage). Everyone has tools which are useful, but have not been used for a number of years, so, this is an opportunity to pass them on to a more needy person. In the event of a poor turnout, (now surprise me and all come along), we will use the time to familiarise ourselves with the new Bandsaw. Also, I am told, (as I will not be there), that a supper will be served.

BBQ Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 29th October. Members will be required to help out on the day, from 0730ish to 1600 hrs This is an excellent way for fund raising, so please put it on your Calendar now! Also on the BBQ note, we initially had a BBQ for master’s in Mulgoa rd Penrith. This BBQ has been cancelled by Master’s

THE FINE CUT

September-SPECIAL EDITION - BREAKING NEWS

G’day all, Just letting all of you who couldn’t attend last night’s AGM know that there were two important decisions made which effect everyone; 1.It was resolved by majority decision, that after the Xmas break the Club will meet on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, with the Tuesday night Meetings being abandoned. This decision was made as Tuesday night attendances were not good, with some Members advising it was too cold to come out in the Winter months, and/or not wanting to drive at night any more. Because it is such a dramatic change from the normal, this change will be trialled for an initial six months, and a Special Meeting will be held to continue this change or not. This will commence on Saturday 14 January 2017 – hours 9.00 AM to 3.00 PM. 2. As the GGA have recently increased our Rent it was resolved that our Attendance fees at a Saturday Workshop Meeting should be increased from the current $6.00 to $8.00. This too will commence on Saturday 14 January 2017.

Please see one of the newly re-elected Committee for more information on these matters.

3. Disappointingly, there were no new Members elected onto the Executive, General Committee or the Support team this year, so following is a list of those elected; President: Philip Knight Vice President: Philip Tonks Secretary: Ray Barrett Treasurer: Ian Griffiths General Committee #1: Daniel Clift NOTE: there are two more positions available for General

Committee Members. Non Committee positions (the Support team) are as follows; Projects & Demonstrations: Douglas Cox Publicity Officer: Ray Barrett Safety Officer: Ray Barrett Newsletter Editor: Daniel Clift First Aid Officer: Daniel Clift Equipment Officer: Philip Knight Catering Officer: Philip Tonks Librarian: Ray Barrett And that’s it for today, so see you on Saturday next. Regards, Ian G. Temporary (hopefully very much so) Editor.
