TY STEPHENSA Philadelphia native, Ty Stephens be-gan his journey in the entertainment business performing in school pro-ductions at Overbrook High School (the same school as famed alum Will Smith), and studying theatre/dance with the Philadelphia Youth Theatre. He went on to Temple University’s re-nowned Tyler School of Art, only to quit during his sophomore year to pursue dance full time (moving to New York to join Rod Rodgers Dance Company and study at the Alvin Ailey School).
After two years on the concert dance scene, he began to perform in musical theatre, ultimately landing two Broad-way Shows with the original casts (So-phisticated Ladies and Marilyn, An American Fable). While on Broadway, Ty began performing in local piano bars and nightclubs, finally deciding to focus on his vocal career and, subse-quently, his songwriting.
REBEL TUMBAORebel Tumbao is a family of like-mind-ed musicians deeply committed to performing music packed with groove, spirituality and energy- a homegrown sound they call “AfroLatinRootsReg-gae”. The band was co-founded by world-renowned percussionist and composer, José Claussell, & pianist, composer and educator Matt Jenson.
The powerhouse eleven-piece ensem-ble perform an uncompromising fusion of two of the most celebrated musical genres on the planet; Roots Reggae and contemporary Cuban Son - with deep influences of soul, gospel, blues, jazz and African folkloric idioms. Both original compositions and innovative new arrangements of Marley songs are featured, ably put across by the soul awakening vocals of Toussaint Yeshua. n

Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s-as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drum-mer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musi-cal explorer.
Panamanian by birth, a New Yorker by upbringing, and a resident of Swit-zerland for more than 25 years, Cob-ham has pursued an ever-broadening, ever-deepening engagement with the world not only as a master drummer and percussionist but as a composer, producer, educator, and clinician who gives service through music even as he constantly expands his personal creative expression.
Mahavishnu Orchestra was formed by McLaughlin in 1971 with Cobham, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, and Rick Laird. They released three acclaimed albums (beginning with Inner Mounting Flame) before the band was dissolved and Cobham chose to launch his solo career with Spectrum, one of the de-finitive albums of the jazz-rock era.
In 2013, Cobham celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of Spectrum CD by touring in USA, Canada and Eu-rope with the Spectrum 40 Band. Also that year, Purple Pyramid Records re-leased the Billy Cobham Compass Point two-CD set, recorded live at Compass Point hotel in the Bahamas in 1997, which was never released be-fore.
Early 2014 marked the release of the much-anticipated Tales from the Skel-eton Coast, which is the third install-ment of the four recordings produced as a commemoration and celebration of Cobham’s mother and father, both of whom were musicians.
This year, Cobham continues to de-velop his ingenious Extended Works series, a trailblazing musician explora-tion that will take shape in collabora-tion with local jazz orchestras around the world. This performance series will bring his critically acclaimed, widely appreciated material to the orchestral jazz stage, sharing his vast musical history with diverse audiences globally.
In 2014, Cobham will release a live CD recording from last years’ celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in com-memoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre. n

Mordy Ferber is an exquisite jazz musi-cian whose compositions and perfor-mances have brought jazz into the 21st century. He effortlessly blends intricate melodies with stunning guitar-playing and musicianship and most importantly has developed a sound of his own. In a recent book by journalist and Jazz His-torian Scott Yanow, Mordy was included in the list of 350 of the greatest Jazz Gui-tarists of all time in the book “The Great Jazz Guitarists: The Ultimate Guide”. Mark Guiliana is an acclaimed drum-mer, composer, educator, producer and founder of the independent re-cord label, Beat Music Records; through which, he will release both My Life Starts Now and Beat Music: The Los Angeles Improvisations as a bandleader later this year.
His forward-thinking, conceptual ap-proach to the instrument is also fea-tured in Mehliana, the electric duo featuring Brad Mehldau on keyboards and synthesizers. The group’s highly anticipated debut album, Taming the Dragon (Nonesuch), was released in early 2014.
Over the past decade, Guiliana’s ex-tensive touring has taken him across six continents with artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, Gretchen Par-
lato, Avishai Cohen, Matisyahu, Lionel Loueke, Now vs. Now, Dhafer Youssef, and his own groups, Beat Music and Heernt. He has also appeared on over 30 recordings to date.
Still in his early thirties, Guiliana, rec-ognized by the New York Times as “a drummer around whom a cult of admi-ration has formed,” has earned inter-national acclaim for his innovative and creative style. Time Out London sums him up perfectly:
“What happens when you add hard bop drum masters Elvin Jones and Art Blakey to a 1980s Roland 808 drum machine, divide the result by J Dilla and then multiply to the power of Squarepusher? Answer: Mark Guili-ana.” n

MARK GUILIANA’S BEAT MUSICLABEL LAUNCH / RECORD RELEASE SHOW
ODEAN POPEA fiery and often intense tenor saxo-phonist, Odean Pope was an impor-tant member of Max Roach’s quartet beginning in 1979. Pope grew up in Philadelphia, took some important mu-sical lessons from Ray Bryant, and had short associations with organist Jimmy McGriff and Art Blakey’s Jazz Mes-sengers. He first began teaming up with Roach in the late ‘60s, although it would be another decade before he be-came a regular part of his group. Pope led Catalyst, a band that made four re-cords in the ‘70s, and he put together the Saxophone Choir in 1977. Falling into the post-bop genre, the latter band consisted of eight saxophones and a rhythm section, and became a part-time unit. But Odean Pope, who re-corded consistently stimulating dates as a leader for Moers and Soul Note, is best known for his many appearances and recordings with Roach.
PHAROAH SANDERS Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders’ sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is pos-sible for a saxophonist to produce. Yet, Sanders is highly regarded to the point of reverence by a great many jazz fans. Although he made his name with ex-pressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz
in John Coltrane’s late ensembles of the mid-’60s, Sanders’ later music is guided by more graceful concerns.
The hallmarks of Sanders’ playing at that time were naked aggression and unre-strained passion. In the years after Col-trane’s death, however, Sanders explored other, somewhat gentler and perhaps more cerebral avenues -- without, it should be added, sacrificing any of the intensity that defined his work as an apprentice to Col-trane, who described Sanders as “a man of large spiritual reservoir.”
JAMES CARTEROne of the most admired saxophonists of his generation and a powerful force in today’s jazz scene, James Carter’s play-ing is firmly rooted in 20th-century African American culture.
By the time Detroit native saxophonist James Carter emerged on the New York jazz scene 1988 he was already a sensa-tion, “it was akin to the second coming... not since the 1960s had someone emerged with so potent a combination of astounding advanced and extended techniques, fiery intensity, and unfettered imagination.” (All About Jazz). Now, Carter the mature artist is firmly established as one of the leading saxophonists of his generation, well versed in everything from straight ahead to gypsy-jazz to funk.n

History has produced its share of great artists and great people – legendary jazz trumpeter John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left be-hind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and es-teem they reserve for his work.
Officially authorized by Lorraine Gil-lespie, and under the leadership of Dizzy’s long-time bassist John Lee, a selection of ensembles of varying sizes were formed, featuring many of the wide variety of musicians who worked with

The Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism presented her with the Young Artist of the Year award in 2005. Her 2009 album, Voyage received the Best Jazz & Crossover Record of the Year’ at the 6th Korean Music Awards.
ULF WAKENIUS
A jazz guitarist extraordinaire ac-claimed and celebrated all over the world. Between 1997 and 2007 Ulf held what may have been the most prestigious spot in jazz for a guitarist: a chair in the Oscar Peterson Quartet. This was the coronation of a career which included many record-breaking
moments. Wakenius guitar duo Gui-tars Unlimited rocked Scandinavia in the early 80s, culminating in the 1985 Melody Grand Prix, which was seen by 600 million viewers, probably the larg-est audience a jazz guitar duo ever had. Shortly after that Wakenius started a extremely successful and long-lasting collaboration with the legendary bass player Niels-Henning Örsted Pedersen.(NHOP), and both of his duo albums with bass icon Ray Brown, topped the US Jazz Charts. The last few years he’s been touriing the world with the amazing Korean singer Youn Sun Nah.Ulf has performed and recorded with greats such as Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Jack De-Johnette, Joe Henderson & Ray Brown.
Oscar Peterson has publicly described Ulf as one of the greatest guitarists alive in the world today and many of today’s most acclaimed jazz guitar-ists are among Ulf’s fans, including Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, John Sco-field and Mike Stern. n

Mystical yet fiery, passionately roman-tic yet supremely cool – you hear those first few notes from that instantly rec-ognizable tenor, and know you’re in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring career has covered vir-tually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-’60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late ’50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orches-tra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chi-co O’Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period.
Barbieri recorded a handful of albums on the Flying Dutchman label in the early ’70s and then signed with the Impulse imprint, where he record-ed his classic Chapter Series: Latin
America (1973), Hasta Siempre (1973), Viva Emiliano Zapata (1974), and Alive in New York (1975). While at Impulse, he also composed the GRAMMY®-winning score for the film Last Tango in Paris (1972) – an achievement he parlayed into success as a film composer, scoring a dozen international films over the years in Europe, South America, and the U.S. By the mid-’70s, Barbieri’s coarse, wailing tone began to mellow, a change evident on his ’70s A&M recordings. However, early ’80s dates like the live Gato … Para Los Amigos (1984) saw the saxophonist reclaim a more intense, rock-influenced South American sound.
After many years of limited musical ac-tivity due to the passing of his first wife Michelle (also his closest musical con-fidant and manager) and his own triple bypass surgery six weeks later, Barbieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling contemporary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has continued to release albums, in-cluding The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard’s prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a GRAMMY® nomination, and New York Meeting (2010), his latest re-lease. n

Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and po-litically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years. His travels around the globe as one of rap’s most in-demand performers combined with his conver-sations with political activists and his genre-straddling work with Idle War-ship and others caused Kweli to realize that he was limited in a sense, a pris-oner of sorts of his own success as one of the world’s best rappers with some-thing significant to say. “My music has been associated with those types of causes, with positiv-ity, spirituality, intelligence and being thought-provoking and such,” he says. “I think sometimes people get caught up in that part of me as an artist and don’t necessarily understand the musi-cality or fully appreciate the music and the entertainment value behind what I do. I tried to stretch my wings a little bit and bring something that was less
beholden to the world of hip-hop and more existing in the world in general.” The result of this artistic growth and exploration arrives with Kweli’s dy-namic 2013 release, Prisoner Of Con-scious AKA P.O.C., an artistic tour de force that signals the start of the next chapter of Kweli’s remarkable career. The BK MC spent more time working on Prisoner Of Conscious than any of his other albums, a three-year journey that found him exploring new vibes, joining in some unlikely collaborations and taking him to foreign lands. Produced by Symbolyc One (Kanye West, Ghostface), the title track’s alter-natively rap and rock-based beat pro-vides a distinctive platform for Kweli to deliver rhymes that detail his artistic awakening, while producers Sean C & LV (Jay-Z, Raekwon) created a Marvin Gaye-esque vibe for “Come,” a cut featuring Miguel that showcases Kweli trying to convince a series of women to do things his way. n

Blue Note is proud to present Canadian flutist and saxophonist Jane Bunnett’s new sextet, Maqueque - celebrating the release of their self-titled debut al-bum (available September 9, 2014 via Justin Time Records). For more than thirty years, through her longstanding ensemble Spirits of Havana, Bennett has been introducing North American jazz audiences to some of the fin-est musicians that Cuba has to offer (providing early opportunities to such future greats as Pedrito Martínez, Daf-nis Prieto, and Yosvany Terry, among others). Now, with her new sextet, Maqueque, she introduces some of Cuba’s most promising female musi-cians to the world. Maqueque consists of virtuoso drummer Yissy García, dy-
namic percussionist Dayme, Yusa on tres guitar and fretless bass, pianist Danae, and Magdelys on batás and congas. All are great vocalists as well as instrumentalists, and all are in their early 20’s (with the exception of Yusa). Their blend of scintillating Afro-Cuban rhythms, folkloric influences, exhilarat-ing jazz, and soulful vocals has broad appeal.
A four-time JUNO Award winner, two-time GRAMMY® nominee, and Officer of the Order of Canada, Bunnett is a national treasure. Known for her coura-geous artistry and adventurous impro-visation, her music explores the fertile intersection of jazz and Afro-Cuban music. n

JANE BUNNETT & MAQUEQUE
After seven years together, The Cook-ers, who “embody the serious-as-death commitment that it took to thrive on the New York scene some four de-cades ago” (Andrew Gilbert, The Bos-ton Globe), entered the studio earlier this year to record their fourth album, Time and Time Again, the follow up al-bum to their three critically-acclaimed recordings, Warriors, Cast The First Stone and Believe. On Time and Time again the incredibly high level of mu-sicianship has only increased with the latest offering of fresh, challenging, boundary-pushing music from these legendary, revered, veteran improvis-ers. Available on Motéma Music, Sep-tember 16, 2014.
You can’t buy experience, and The Cookers have it in abundance; com-bined, the group has over 250 years of experience in the jazz world, and has been a part of over 1,000 recordings. The breadth of the compositions on Time and Time Again spans more than 40 years. Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, and Billy Hart, each bandleaders in their own right, came up in the exhilarat-ing era of the mid 1960s. On Time and
Time Again you can hear and feel the decades of living and playing these warhorses have racked up in the bands of jazz stalwarts such as Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, Max Roach, Art Blakey and many others. Also on full display is the take-no-prisoners approach that the band has become known for worldwide, married with a profound melodic and harmonic sophistication. “If you wondered what has happened to all the passion and intensity, once such essential ingredi-ents of great swinging jazz and now virtually non-existent in so much of today’s outpourings, you’ll find it all in The Cookers,” said Tony Hall in Jazz-Wise Magazine (UK). David Weiss, and the newest member, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, from a younger gen-eration, match their passion and inten-sity with aplomb.
“The Cookers are more interested in making history than they are in re-liv-ing it . . .” (J Hunter, Nippertown), and through the music on Time and Time Again The Cookers produce a mighty force of commitment, to each other, and to the music. n

Lou Donaldson is very honored to be performing at Blue Note Jazz Club with his world class quartet, with whom he has been touring the world playing fes-tivals and clubs for the past two de-cades.
Awarded an NEA Jazz Masters fel-lowship in 2013, Donaldson has been termed a “truly unique and absolutely indispensable creative voice in mod-ern jazz whose greatness stretches from being one of sublime virtuosos of swinging bebop and hard bop to being the creator of his own genre of funky jazz boogaloo that has profoundly in-
fluenced contemporary American mu-sic in many ways for several decades.”
Donaldson played an absolutely in-valuable role in the creation and build-ing of the classic Blue Note Records label, and the assembly and musical development of the the classic Jazz Messengers bands that originally fea-tured Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Hor-ace Silver, Gene Ramey, Hank Mobley, and many other of the greatest creative virtuosos of the this entire era of mod-ern jazz expression. n

“Perfection, 360 degrees of soul and science in one human being. My kind of musician.” - Quincy Jones
Coalition will mark world-class pianist and composer Kenny Werner’s eighth release for Half Note Records (available now), a catalog that includes his mas-terwork No Beginning No End, which was awarded a Guggenheim Fellow-ship in 2010. A consummate “musi-cian’s musician,” Werner may be best known for his hugely influential instruc-tional guide on improvisation, Effort-less Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within, original published in 1996. While countless student musi-cians have benefited from the book’s teachings, Levenson recounts an en-counter where he overheard musical geniuses Quincy Jones and Herb Alp-ert excitedly discussing its merits.Coalition is the title of the studio al-bum and Werner’s new quintet. It was formed out of the pianist’s desire to work with Benin-born guitarist/vocal-ist Lionel Loueke and Puerto Rican alto saxophonist and composer Miguel Ze-nón, two leaders of the younger gen-eration of multi-cultural jazz artists. He also enlisted Danish saxophonist Ben-jamin Koppel and Hungarian bassist Ferenc Nemeth to create some of the most forward-thinking music of his ca-
reer, a set of music alive with diverse rhythms and wide-ranging approaches featuring collaborative contributions from the group. “Coalition is indicative of Werner’s ap-proach,” explains Jeff Levenson, Ex-ecutive Vice-President of Half Note Records. “In each of his projects he attempts to place himself in a setting that will expand his reach, provide a challenge and create a context that will help him develop as an artist.”The ‘90s saw Werner begin several outstanding musical partnerships. He has enjoyed a longstanding duo col-laboration with Toots Thielemans, the legendary harmonica player. For 20 years he has played with and arranged for Broadway legend Betty Buckley. He has also enjoyed a nearly 40-year friendship and musical collaboration with Joe Lovano, with each recording on several of the other’s projects. In 2000, Werner formed a new trio with Ari Hoenig on drums and Johannes Weidenmueller on bass. They played together for nearly a decade and re-leased three albums, the last of which, Peace: Live at the Blue Note (2004), began Werner’s fruitful relationship with Half Note Records, the recording arm of the Blue Note Jazz Club. n

The BRF sound is in the truest sense of the words, World Roots Music. The Brown Rice Family vibe is similar to Fela Kuti’s, but if Bob Marley and Antonio Carlos wanted to get on board for a gig, they would. BRF’s colorful sound waves will carry rhythm surfers on a musical journey that straddles ancient and con-temporary global sounds. BRF firmly believes in self-improvement and envi-ronmental improvement, and so the col-lective is perpetually seeking out health-ier ways of living, grooving, and eating. And this belief is not only in their music, it stretches out into the crafting of the band-made “Brown Rice Family soap”. This soap is made of the most natural ingredients available from organic farm-ers and suppliers.

LIL JOHN ROBERTS
One of the most sought after jazz and R&B drummers of his generation, John “Lil John” Roberts has maintained his status in the industry as the ultimate heartbeat. A native of Philadelphia, John quickly became noted as a child prodigy, playing alongside Christian McBride and Joey DeFrancesco at the age of 16.
His list of credits also include many of the industries greatest such as: Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Prince, Sheila E, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson, Mi-chael Jackson, Elton John, Al Green, BB King, Patti Labelle, India.Arie, Queen Latifah, Raphael Saadiq, Jill Scott, Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dog, Mos Def, Common, and Earth, Wind and Fire, among others.

THE REVELATIONS SALUTE BOBBY WOMACK
For The Revelations, their latest offering, The Cost Of Living (Decision/Sony RED), is a labor of love years in the making. Since they first came on the scene in 2008 with their Deep Soul EP(Decision), Brooklyn, NY’s The Revelations have represented a twenty-first-century take on classic soul—one which shows reverence for the mas-ters, but with a uniquely modern sensi-bility—a sound The New York Times’ Jon Pareles calls “revivalism without poses or quotation marks”.
The distinctive blues/rock/soul sound of The Cost Of Living was recorded at soul mecca Royal Studios in Memphis, TN, pro-duced by Bob Perry with Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, as well as The Revelations them-selves. From the opening track, “Mama”, about a single mother scrounging to raise her children, to the jaded optimism of “It’s Ok”, the pragmatism of “Money Makes The World Go ‘Round”, and the heart-bro-ken disillusionment of the soul classic “Got To Use My Imagination”, The Revelations continue their tradition of presenting blues topics with soul music’s urgency. The Revelations’ engaging and energetic live performances continue to win over au-diences from Brooklyn to the Mississippi Delta to California and beyond, creating fans such as A-listers B.B. King, Bobby Womack and Stevie Wonder in the pro-cess. This is new, true soul music with a sharp, modern edge. n

“Unique Corea-brand blending of taut clarity and twisting ornate melody.” - San Jose Mercury News
An NEA Jazz Master, 20-time GRAM-MY® winner, prolific composer and keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after five decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply stag-gering.
From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illus-trious career while maintaining a stan-dard of excellence that is awe-inspir-ing. A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process.
With The Vigil, Corea reinvents himself again: all new music and an all new band (showcasing a hard-charging lineup of primarily young guns). Plus, fresh arrangements of Corea Classics. From sublime acoustic to brilliant elec-tric.
Featuring the bass phenom, Carlitos Del Puerto. Creative force Marcus Gilmore on drums (carrying on the lineage of jazz from his grandfather, Roy Haynes). Saxes, flute, bass clari-net and innovation from Tim Garland. Rising-sun (although from the west coast), guitarist Charles Altura. And percussion powerhouse Luisito Quin-tero.
In early 2014, Chick released Solo Pi-ano: Portraits, a fascinating, two-disc collection of solo piano performances. A rare musical experience, Corea’s 2014 Concord Jazz release takes lis-teners on an unusual musical journey, blending his adventurous playing with a compelling sequence of spoken nar-ratives about the art of solo jazz piano.
In September 2014, Stretch Records/Concord Jazz will release Trilogy – a recording to rank with the landmarks of Corea’s career. Trilogy is a triple-CD set recorded live around the world with his spectacularly virtuosic trio featur-ing bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade, both star lead-ers in their own right (and previously the rhythmic backbone in Corea’s Five Peace Band). n
