sectional with a time of 21:08, Erin broke the record at
regional, and both broke the record again at semi-state

Volunteers needed
Camp Quality Kentuckiana is looking for volunteers to work
its week-long camping experience for children with cancer.
Greg Henderzahs '68 is director of CQK and is
specifically looking for Providence graduates interested in
working the camp in June 2013. Volunteers must agree to
training and a background check. For more info, visit
www.campqualityky.com or call 502-777-7398.
2011 grad shares AFROTC experience Taylor Hamblin '11 has joined
the University of Louisville Air
Force ROTC Flyin' Cards unit.
Taylor is a sophomore history and
secondary social studies education
major at IU Southeast. He joined
the U of L AFROTC because it is
open to students from surrounding colleges and because
he is interested in joining the U.S. Air Force. His father was
an enlisted man in the Air Force, and his uncle had a 24-
year career as an Air Force officer.
Taylor was at PHS during lunches recently to talk to juniors
and seniors interested in joining the Air Force or the
AFROTC. He said his goal is to become an ROTC professor
or work in the intelligence field. After earning his
bachelor's degree, he will be able to enter the Air Force as
a commissioned second lieutenant.
"They (AFROTC) have a lot of great scholarship
opportunities, and it's really a great way to become
something better and be part of something bigger than
yourself," he said.

Alumni Accomplishments
Providence grads get things done!
Kraft repeats internship experience
Jacob Kraft '10 has spent his last two summers interning
at St. Meinrad for the seminary's One Bread One Cup
liturgical leadership conferences.
"It has been a fantastic experience that has given me
ample opportunity to learn and develop my personal faith
through prayer, community, and education. I applied for
this internship because I had gone to the conference three
years as a high school participant and loved each one. It
was my first experience of OBOC, in the summer after my
freshman year at Providence, that really brought my faith
to the center of my life. Because of this, I wanted to be a
part of it and help other youth have a similar experience as
me.
"As an intern, I live on the Holy Hill for six weeks with 19
other college interns from all around the country. For three
of the weeks we have community building time and
formation classes in which we just do different fun
activities such as take trips to Patoka Lake, have swim
parties, visit Holiday World, and play lots and lots of
games, and also take classes on spirituality, liturgy, and
leadership. For the other three weeks, we lead a program
for high school students that gives them an opportunity to
become better leaders in the church. We educate them on
all the different aspects of the liturgy and teach them more
about the faith. The focus is not on the 'whats' of our faith,
but more on the 'whys.'
"Every day during the conferences and during the
formation weeks, we pray the Liturgy of the Hours and
celebrate Mass. It sounds like a pretty big bore when I try
to explain it, but it's really just something you have to
experience for yourself. Almost every participant leaves
with a much deeper appreciation for our faith and the
sacraments and I can't wait to come back the next year.
"It's a true blessing to be a part of this program and have
the opportunity to spend quality time at the monastery. I
have been able to build fruitful relationships with many of
the monks and have learned a lot about life from very holy
men and women on the hill. This coming summer I will be
returning once again and will be the Intern Manager. My
role will be a little different than what it has been in the
past, but I am still very excited! One Bread One Cup is
really the highlight of my summer and I love every minute
I get to be a part of it."

website, click here.
Grad participates in Urban Semester
Paige Daniel '10 is spending this semester in an
Immersive Learning Program through Ball State called
Urban Semester. During the program, elementary
education majors have the opportunity to collaborate with
an elementary teacher in an urban public school in
Speedway, Ind. As an Urban Intern (aka Urbanite) she is
in the classroom four days a week and takes classes the
remaining day from Ball State professors.
"I chose to participate in the program for many different
reasons. The main reason I chose Urban Semester is
because I have a strong passion for working with low-
income or urban students. My goal after graduating is to
become an educator in a low-income inner-city school. I
want to be able to help the children who need it most.
"During elementary school, children need a positive and
encouraging role model that can provide a safe, fun, and
educational environment. I viewed Urban Semester as a
way for me to both differentiate myself from other
elementary education majors and to quick-start my
passion for working in a low-income urban school. Being
top in not only the state but also the nation for education,
Ball State University has taught me a lot about teaching.
However, I knew I would not be fully prepared for student
teaching and being an educator until I was actually thrown
into the classroom. I knew Urban Semester was a
wonderful way for me to receive hands-on experience and
better prepare myself for the future.
"Although this semester has been challenging and quite
exhausting, I have learned so much about teaching and
myself. I have spent my semester in a first grade
classroom with students that come from varying
backgrounds and learning levels. Every day, I witness the
harsh reality of poverty that many parents and children
face. Students coming to school lacking a backpack, school
supplies, clean clothes, sleep, food, etc., is a common
occurrence in every classroom in the school. Along with
these basic needs, many of my students do not have the
same social skills that my parents once taught me.
"My eyes have been opened to the stress and innocence
that my students come to school with everyday. I quickly
realized how blessed my life is and am so grateful for
everything God has given me, including this experience.
Urban Semester has further reassured me that God has
called me to work with children from less fortunate
backgrounds."
A year abroad
Claire Joksimovic '11 is taking a year off from IU
Bloomington, where she is studying secondary education,
to teach English as a second language in France until July
2013. She was recommended for the job by PHS French
teacher Katie Aebersold at the request of a teacher in La
Garenne-Colombes, France, a sister city with Clarksville.
PHS French students continue to participate in the Sister
Cities Exchange Program, as did Claire while a student
here.
"It's always been my dream to live and travel around
Europe. Something about the history and culture has
always been attractive to me and has grabbed my interest.
When Katie Aebersold contacted me telling me our Sister
City of La Garenne-Colombes wanted an assistant from
Clarksville, I knew I couldn't pass it up. It was the perfect
channel for me to finally be able to do what I've always
wanted to. And I'm young! I have to take advantage of
these things while I can.
"So I felt like there was no other option but 'yes.' I'm
teaching at Collège les Champs-Philippe, which was
established just a couple of years ago, so it's a very
modern school. I work in the classroom with the English
teachers (about 30 or so students) and then take 2-4
students at a time in my own small classroom, and speak
with them for 20-30 minutes at a time. My objective is to
get them to speak as much as possible in order to build
their confidence speaking English, improve their skills, as
well as their accent.
"I think this experience will impact the rest of my schooling
by giving me an idea of what I'm working towards doing. I
have a much more practical view of what it takes to run a
classroom and how much work it is. But also how
rewarding it is. I think it's exciting that I'm getting this
experience so I can complete my studies with confidence
that this is what I want to do.
"The most challenging thing has been communication!
There's a different pace in Europe, and it has taken a bit to
adjust to that. It's not the go-go-go attitude we have in
America, so that's been a bit frustrating at times, but I
think my patience has grown, and I'm actually really liking
and appreciating the slower pace now. And the most fun
has been meeting all of the classes. They get extremely
excited when they meet me, and it's an absolute blast to
speak with them and get to know them.
"And, yes, I am traveling! I'm currently in Spain now and
heading back to Ireland tomorrow afternoon. I've always
had a passion for traveling, and seeing Ireland has given
me the bug to want to see more! It's absolutely incredible
that I have the opportunity to do so, so I'm definitely
going to take advantage of traveling (while I'm here)."
