Ryan Picker delivers as

Canberra beat Sydney 21-14---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Canberra,ACT- It was a controversial week for both Canberra Head

Coach Nathan Richards and his new Quarterback Ryan Picker. Picker

had won the teams starting job with just a week and a half of football

left in the Regular Season and with finals football on the agenda it wasa huge call. But Picker showed in the first half that he has all of the

tools to deliver the high expectations placed upon him. He has been

pushing hard for most of the season. He has not put a foot wrong and

he showed today what we had been seeing all year said Coach Nathan

Richards.

Sydney are the most formidable defence in the League and the

pressure they often apply is not just physical but mental also. They

were expected to apply the heat on young Picker but for this game

they were more willing to sit back in zones and play a passive defence.

Sometimes it works out that way was all Coach Graeme Eadie would

say. With more time to work with, Picker threw 3 touchdowns and

took very good care of the ball, not conceding an interception. His first

score connected with the speedy Zac Ioesefo who ran a wheel route

down the right for the spectacular 79 yard score. Sidney rice then wentup and made a tough catch in the corner before Ioesefo was again

using his speed this time over the middle.

Sydney meanwhile struggled against one of the leagues other great

defences. A fumbled possession was followed by two interceptions

from Matt Heasman who must have provided some concerns for Coach

Eadie leading into the post season. Matty did not have one of his

better days, he will be the first to say that.

Sydney did score through Kurt Stonier after a long drive of 14 plays.

Stonier ripped through some tiring defence to score from2 yards out.

Greg Watene made the game even more interesting in the 4th

quarter

when he scored but despite holding Canberra on downs the Blues

decided to run out the clock rather than go for the win as their position

of 3

rd

on the table would not be impacted.
