BMA Mission:
To promote excellence in the manufacture, sale and use of biobased products and the responsible development of renewable resources.
BMA Functions:• An affordable e-commerce site for marketing
member products on line and bargaining for input needs collectively.
• A national standards credential service.• A national information clearing house and
networking portal for stakeholders.• A single voice to gather input and represent the
interests of biobased manufacturers in government policy and regulation.
• A media relations agent for biobased products.
What is a biobased product?
• Relies on plant or animal materials as the main ingredient.
• The plants or animals utilized are a renewable resource.
• With some exceptions, generally do not contain synthetics, toxins or environmentally damaging substances.
Proposed labeling & marketing definitions
• A “biobased” product has a biomaterial content of 90% or more (apart from water and other inorganic materials).
• The percentage is by volume if a liquid or by weight if a solid.
• The non-biobased content is incidental to overall product performance and made necessary only because a cost-competitive biobased equivalent does not yet exist in the marketplace.
Proposed labeling & marketing definitions (cont.)
• Only products that are 90% are greater biobased may be labeled: BIOBASED PRODUCT
• Products that are 51% to 90% biomaterial may be labeled: “High Biobased Content.”
• Products that are 21% to 50% biomaterial may be labeled: “Moderate Biobased Content.”
• Products that are 20% or less biomaterial must be labeled: “Low Biobased Content” if the term biobased is used in labeling at all.
Biobased products fall into three broad categories:
• Biofuels (oils, biodiesel, ethanol) • Biochemicals (specialty chemicals such as paints,
inks, surfactants, polymers, lubricants, solvents, and plant-made pharmaceuticals)
• Biomaterials (fiber products, lumber, leather, processed foods, laminates, roofing, plastics, insulation, etc.)
Examples of Biobased feedstocks:• Seeds (oilseeds, feedgrains, foodgrains)• Fruit & melons (apple, orange, pear, etc.)• Leaves (grasses, hay, flax, rice, wheat, milkweed)• Stems (kenaf, sugar cane, trees, hemp)• Algae (phytoplankton, kelp, etc.)• Animals (cattle, sheep, bees, fish, sponges, birds,
zooplankton, etc.)• Waste (manure, crop and forest residue, urban
biomass waste, food processing waste, etc.)• Bacteria (molds, fungi, etc.)
Biomass waste fact:
“Enough biomass waste is generated annually (280 million tons) to supply domestic consumption of all industrial chemicals that can be made from biomass
and still contribute an excess to the liquid transportation fuel supply.”

Typical Biobased Manufacturer
• Less than $1 million in annual sales
• Ten person staff or less
• Five years old or less
• $100K in initial capitalization
Typical Biobased Manufacturer lacks:
• Sophisticated distribution channels; usually highly localized• Sophisticated business management skills• Upward mobility driven by market demand• Government development support compared to mainstream
manufacturing entities• Connection to global markets• Institutional credit rating and securities outlets for capital
expansion
Typical Biobased Manufacturer needs:
• Adequate capitalization • Adequate testing or sophisticated industry data• Distribution at all levels• Price parity with non-biobased products• Affordable first or second stage materials locally
available• Marketing and sales skills and talents• Significant market presence• Consumer education• Government support for domestic and export sales
BMA Action Plan:
• A BMA Bio-Mart Supercenter that links consumers and suppliers to manufacturers; the “e-Bay of the Biobased World”
• Cultivate relationships between manufacturers and distributors, wholesalers, agents, brokerages, commodity houses, consumers, retailers, resellers, etc.
• Promote demand for biobased products by educating the public, industry, government, and commercial customers about the available biobased alternatives, their affordability and the favorable differences with non-biobased products.
BMA Action Plan (cont.):
• Investigate new market opportunities and help facilitate product development.
• Help to establish new quality control standards.
• Create manufacturing cooperatives to improve the supply of biobased materials and improve manufacturing economies.
• Work with other trade associations to find new economies in commodity materials development funded by long term cooperative financial programs.
BMA Action Plan (cont.):
• Promote the BIOBASED image as complying with the performance standards of the BMA to help reinforce consumer confidence in biobased products.
• Attempt to gain government tax relief for consumer biobased purchasing.
• Promote the BIOBASED Trade Fair.
• Reward Biobased Manufacturing excellence, new product development and substantial market success in traditional non-biobased product areas.
BMA Member Services• Monthly online newsletter with proactive response page.• Membership directory linking inquiries to member web sites.• Annual “connection summary” documenting prospect inquiries routed
to members by product category.• Access to auctions for purchasing feedstocks.• Promotion and sales transaction services for members without an
active web site commerce center.• Access to member “storefronts” with product educational information
including descriptions, specifications, recent pricing and key seller information, contact points, web site links, etc.
• BMA Marketing Materials including video and print media.• Capitalization assistance.
What Government Can Do To Help:
• Government Statistical Data on biomass and biobased products. At this time, no government agency is compiling such information.
• Federal policy to require use of biobased materials whenever competitive in cost, performance and availability and incentives for states and municipalities to do likewise.
• Help with consumer awareness of biobased products and where to buy them by expanding “buy bio” movement among government agencies to a marketing campaign aimed at consumers, business and industry.
• Increased direct federal assistance to biobased manufacturers in the form of developmental grants and low interest loans.
• Buying and selling venues for feedstocks comparable to the Chicago Board of Trade but tailored to the needs of the biobased sector.
• Tax relief to biobased manufacturers, manufacturers who change from synthetics and petroleum based sourcing, and biobased consumers in order to stimulate biobased market growth.
