Scott Redding made a Stunning RetuRn to the podium in a Rain-laShed FRench moto2 Race at le manS, the BRitiSh RideR maSteRing tReacheRouS conditionS to FiniSh in a Richly deSeRved thiRd poSition.
redding made an aggressive start from
the second row of the grid and quickly
assessed grip levels to put his kalex
machine inside the top three for the
opening 12 laps.
the Marc Vds rider’s new smooth riding
style that he started using in france to
help conserve his dunlop tyres over a race
distance was also a huge benefit in the wet
conditions and the 19-year-old kept himself
in contention for the podium.
redding rode a faultless final five laps
to secure his first podium since the 2010
australian grand prix at phillip island, a
result made even more special coming in
the home race for the Marc Vds racing
team’s technical sponsor elf.
“I am really happy because it feels like a long time since I was on the podium and this is a great result for me and the Marc VDS Team,” declared redding. “We have been threatening to get a result like this all season and it feels great because last year was a bit of a disaster and we made a big gamble to change the chassis to Kalex. Right from the start of testing it made a big difference to my confidence. Apart from the result, the positive is that I felt confident in the rain. I had a great feeling with the bike and to be on the podium in the rain is a special feeling. It was tough at the start because each time I touched the throttle I’d lose the rear, so I just calmed down and tried to be smooth and attacked when I felt comfortable. Once I got back into third I just kept my concentration because it was easy to make a mistake and now we can move forward with a lot of confidence that I’m competitive in both wet and dry.”

the same day free practice got underway
at Jerez for the first round of the red Bull

european and national titles to his name in
the pocketbike and nsf100 classes.
“Belgium has a long tradition of producing world class drivers, but the same isn’t true of motorcycle racers,” explains Marc van
der straten, president of the Marc Vds
racing team. “Not since 1991 have we had
a competitive Belgian rider competing regularly in the premier class of motorcycle racing, which is far too long in my opinion.”
“We set up our Moto2 team in 2010 with the aim of running at least one Belgian rider in the team, but this proved impossible because there simply wasn’t a rider of the required calibre available in Belgium at that time. We realised that if we wanted a Belgian rider on our bike, a rider that has the talent to progress to MotoGP in the future, then we had to look at the youngsters coming into the sport and help them to realise their potential. This is why we have chosen to join BMP in supporting Livio Loi this season.”

kallio threw caution to the wind at the start,
diving up the inside of the field on the entry to
turn one to make up a handful of places in one
go. the 29-year-old finn then continued to pick
up places on the opening lap and was quickly
involved in what turned out to be the battle for
fourth place.
a drop off in rear grip left kallio able to match
the lap times of the other riders in the group,
but unable to mount a challenge to improve
his position. the Marc Vds rider was eventually
forced to settle for ninth position at the
chequered flag.
redding was involved in the battle for the lead
in the early stages of the race, but dropped
off the back of the leading group when his
right hand went numb and made it difficult
for the 19-year-old Briton to brake and open
the throttle with any feeling. redding dropped
back to try and recover feeling in the hand, but
no improvement was forthcoming and he was
forced to defend tenth place to the finish.
“Mika rode a hard race today, to fight his way up from the seventh row of the grid and finish inside the top ten,” said team principal, Michael
Bartholemy. “I have no doubt that, if he hadn’t had to use up his tyres fighting his way through the field in the opening laps, a top five finish was a possibility today. We need to work with Mika on his qualifying, as it’s costing him good results at the moment. Scott also looked strong in the early part of today’s race, but he started struggling with a numb right hand that cause problems for him on the brakes and with the throttle. He did well to defend tenth position until the end of the race. We need to find out exactly what caused the problem, as it’s not something Scott has experienced before.”

“I tried to catch Kenan but he was too fast in places while I was faster on others,” explained
Cluzel. “Near the end I tried but it was too many risks and I made two mistakes that allowed him to get a small lead. Anyway, I am really happy, this is my third time on the podium in a row and I am now second in the Championship which is good for the PTR team, me and the
rest of the season. I am really happy. Next time I want to be first and I will do my best.”
sam lowes was on course for a podium finish

starting from pole position for the third time in as many seasons at the losail international Circuit the #99 BMw s1000rr, with erwan nigon at the controls, took the race lead on the opening lap.
once out in front with a clear track ahead of him nigon pushed hard to pull a gap on the field, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process, only to see his hard work negated when the safety car was deployed in response to an oil spill and the field closed back up once again.
nigon took advantage of the safety car to pit in, refuel and handover to sébastien gimbert, who retook the race lead on lap 39 and was able to quickly re-establish a comfortable gap back to second place.
the #99 BMw s1000rr led the race from this point on, with nigon, gimbert and damian Cudlin able to control things from the front, comfortably managing the gap on track while the team’s mechanics made short work of the pit stops.
finishing what he’d started eight hours earlier, nigon eventually took the chequered flag with a two-lap advantage at the front of the race, to give BMw Motorrad france
team thevent and Michelin their first win of the 2012 season.
“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to bounce back from the disappointment of the Bol d’Or with an emphatic win here in Qatar, a track that hasn’t been kind to us in the past,” declared team principal, Michel Bartholemy. “The team and all three riders have done a fantastic job this week, and for that I’d like to say a big thank you. I’d also like to thank BMW, in particular Marcel Driessen and Berthold Hauser, as well as Sachar Rodenbusch, Bischoff and Scheck and all our sponsors and partners for their continued support, without which we wouldn’t be here. It’s a credit to Michelin that we were able to use the same tyre throughout the race, despite the extremes of temperature. The win here means we’re well and truly back in contention for the championship title, with just 19 points separating us from the top of the standings. I hope we’ll be able to reduce that gap even further next time out at Suzuka.”
the victory in Qatar promotes BMw Motorrad france team thevent to fifth in the 2012 endurance world Championship standings, just 19 points behind the series leaders with three rounds to go.

eLf Backed PTR TeaM doMinanT at Monza and doningtonJuleS cluzel took hiS FiRSt WoRld SupeRSpoRt Race Win at monza, With teammate Sam loWeS FiniShing Second to make it a ptR honda one-tWo on the podium.
“I am so happy,” declared Cluzel on the podium.
“That was a really good race although it felt very long. First I did a good start and tried to get a feel for the bike, to see what I could do. When I saw Parkes crash, I pulled behind Sam and I just tried to follow him thinking to finish the race. For me I wanted a podium, then I saw Sam go straight on. Leading is more difficult than following as you can make mistakes. I tried not to make mistakes and checked my pit board. I saw Sam closing slowly and then in the last two laps he closed a lot. I thought he might try to pass me on the brakes on the last corner so I braked a little later than before and he came inside me. I thought he might struggle to hold his line and he did. I did not expect to win.”
the following round, at donington park, saw
lowes turn the tables on his ptr honda
teammate to take his first world supersport
race win, with Cluzel also finishing on the
podium in third place.
“The weekend was a bit tough for me but in the race my bike was working fantastic so I’m really happy with my first win,” declared lowes. “After taking the lead I was just looking at my pit-board and focusing on lapping as consistent as I could. I upped the pace with two laps to go trying to extend my advantage a little bit and it worked alright so I’m really happy. It’s great to take my first World Supersport in front of my home crowd and I’m really grateful for the support.”
damian Cudlin started the race in the wet, but a dry line started to appear around the track
almost immediately, making the conditions tricky for all. Cudlin managed to maintain fourth
position to the first pit stop, after which he returned to the track to complete a double stint
on the bike.
unfortunately, just two laps before he was due to handover to sébastien gimbert, Cudlin
crashed heavily at the end of the straight and was forced to push back to the pits.
gimbert took to the track once the crash damage had been repaired, but was forced to return
to the pit box after experiencing problems on his first lap. following further inspection of the
bike by the team’s technical staff, it was decided to withdraw from the race on safety grounds.
Cudlin suffered a suspected mild concussion in the crash, but was otherwise uninjured.

this impressive showing was in no small
part thanks to Michelin, who supplied
the team with the same tyres as their
factory supported entries.
“Tyres are critical to a good result at the Nürburgring, but securing the best rubber is not always so easy for a private team like Marc VDS,” said Michael
Bartholemy, director of BMp. “We work closely with Michelin in the Endurance World Championship, and we were able to use this association to secure for Marc VDS the same tyres that Michelin normally only supply to their factory supported teams. For that I’d like to say thank you to Michelin, and to Nicolas Goubert in particular.”
“To perform well in an endurance race there are several important conditions to fulfil,” explains sebastien Metz, technical
director of the Marc Vds racing team.
“Tyres are critical at an event like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and there is no doubt that our drivers had the best Michelin tyres at their disposal.”
“The French manufacturer proved to be very efficient by giving us the same spec of tyres as the factory teams. During the race the Michelin engineers provided some very valuable advice as well, especially on Sunday morning when changing weather on the long track made life very difficult for us. It was very tempting to put rain tyres on the car, but on the 28.378 km of the Green Hell that would have been a catastrophic decision. The Michelin people suggested some cut slicks, which proved to be the right decision.”
