INTRODUCTION
• THIS POST WILL EXPLAIN THE COMMON/AVERAGE CONVENTIONS SEEN WITHIN ROCK MUSIC VIDEOS. I WILL ANALYSE WHAT SUITS THE CONVENTIONS AND WHAT DIFFERS FROM THEM TO MAKE THE NARRATIVE MORE NICHE FOR THIS BAND SPECIFICALLY.
The music video opens with a scene from the narrative.
This is not a common convention, only
some music videos do it. It could suggest
the narrative is important so
therefore it is the first thin to be focused upon, this is more relative in 'Can You
Feel My Heart' as the narrative is hard to
understand, it's more metaphorical than
literal.
Slow motion is used, creating a more dramatic narrative as is reduces the time at which we learn what the narrative is about. This added anticipation aids the viewers need to watch the video and the edit adds to the smooth flow of the video in conjunction with the performance side.
This music video stands out further, as the characters within the narrative are also present during the performance. This connotes the connection between the two is strong and potentially the relation of lyrics to visuals is connected greatly displaying the bands song has a strong personal meaning.
The narrative despite not being a literal representation still suits the conventions of rock. It contains gore which is common since the lyrics speak about the 'heart' and emotions and the way it is sung resembles shouting, emitting the passion in the songs meaning.
This narrative structure supports Todorov's theory as characters attempt to repair the problem that has occurred, and the ending shot contains more positive colors suggesting equilibrium has occured.
