The safetyglass protects againstfull-jacketed flat-head bullets up to.44 Magnum (additional tests werecarried outwith .357 Magnum and 9mm projectiles): Softcore ammunition,projectile velocity440 m/s, projectilemass 15.6 g, shotdistance fortesting5 m. Tested with three shots atastriking distance of120 mm.

The testing and certification oftheentire vehicle were carried outby theState Ballistic Authorityin Mellrichstadt/Germany, according to Europeanstandards DIN EN 1063 and DINEN 1522/23-1.Testing is based onthe BRV1999 testing and certificationguidelines forbulletresistantpassengercars and othervehicles.

The entire passengercell oftheBMW5 Series Securityis bullet-resistantand also protects againstbullets up to calibre .44 Magnum(including .357 Magnum and 9 mm).This is ensured bymoulds andplates made ofspecial compositefibre materials(aramide andpolyethylene) plus high-performanceballistic-resistantsteel. The sideareas, roof, pillars, doortrim panels,frontfootwell and rearare allreinforced with these materials.

The testing complied with the impactangle of45 to 90 required bytheBRVguidelines. On top ofthis,various angles between 17 and 90were tested all round the entirevehicle, thus exceeding the require-ments ofthe BRV1999 guidelinesand guaranteeing the mostrealisticscenario possible .

AttackAlarmSystemWhen the button fortriggering theattack alarm system is pressed, opticaland acoustic signals directthe greatestpossible level ofattention towards thecar: a wailing siren sounds fora periodof30 seconds. This is accompanied bythe main-beam headlights and foglightsflashing on and offatthe same interval.Forsafety purposes, all the windowsare closed, the central locking systemengaged, the automatic air-conditioningshutdown and the fresh airflaps closed.

Run-Flattyres.The Run-Flatsystem enables thevehicle to drive up to 50 km atamaximum of80 kph (50 mph) in theeventof a puncture, so thatyou canmake sure you reach safetybeforechanging the tyre.

Reinforced side walls and a heat-resistantrubber mixture meanthe tyre can still be used even ifthereis a complete loss ofpressure, andthe wheel rim shape prevents thetyre from detaching from the wheel.

The brakes have also been suitablyincreased in size in orderto guaranteeoptimum deceleration.

Centrallockingsystem.The central locking system is automa-ticallyactivated when pulling awayboth forwards and in reverse as soonas the BMW5 Series Securityhasreached a speed of4 mph.

Electricwindows.Formaximum protection ofoccupants,the BMW5 Series Securitys windowshave no obstruction sensors. The frontwindows can be opened almostcompletelywhile the opening ofrearwindows is available as an option.

Intercomsystem.An intercom system is installed forcommunication with persons outsidethe vehicle while doors and windowsare locked. The control unitis installedin the centre console.

Chassisandsuspension.In terms of driving stability, brakingand steering characteristics, theBMW5 Series Securitycan hardlybedistinguished from a normal 5 Seriescar. This is achieved through a widerange ofchanges to the chassisand suspension preciselydesignedto compensate forthe vehiclesincreasedweight. As a result, the carsdynamism and agilityare virtuallyunaltered and the carcan be drivenin a normal fashion even on adverseroad surfaces.
