1. Important information for the installation of the sound module system E53

Only for use in the BMW dealer organisation.

The sound module system may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).

This high quality audio system is to be used exclusively in conjunction with original BMW car radios.�

If it is fitted to other makes, BMW AG cannot accept any guarantee for the sound module system.The sound module system is only designed for installation in cars, which do not have an audio amplifier (for example cars with a hi-fi system or Harman Kardon hi-fi system).

When installing cables/leads ensure that they are not kinked or damaged. Additional cables/leads that you install must be secured with cable ties.Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the appropriate figure.Deburr holes, remove drill chips and treat with standard BMW anti-corrosion methods.The original template is supplied in the installation kit.The template in the installation instructions is not original size and must not be used.The customer information is to be given to the customer.

7. To install the amplifier (cars without an on-board monitor radio only)

0 Cut out the insulation mat (30) on the A pillar, as shown in the Figure, around the mounting points (31) for the EWS module and remove it.

Use the mounting points on the EWS module.�

Secure the amplifier holder (8) to the A pillar using the two fillister head screws (30) for the EWS control module.Mark the holes (31) on the A pillar and remove the amplifier holder (8) again.Drill holes with a diameter of 4 mm on the A pillar.

0 Secure the amplifier holder (8) to the A pillar using the two fillister head screws (30) for the EWS control module and two fillister head screws 4.8x16 (5).

0 Affix the felt strip (17) to the amplifier (4), as shown in the figure.

0 Secure the gong holder (15) to the bottom end of the amplifier (4) using four fillister head screws 3.5x9.5 (6).

Before installing the amplifier (4) connect the radio/amplifier adapter cable A to the amplifier.�

Attach branch A4, 25-pin socket casing to the plug strip (30) and press it in the direction indicated by the arrow with a large flat screwdriver (31) until it audibly engages in the amplifier casing.

0 Push the amplifier (4) with the radio/amplifier adapter cable A upwards into the amplifier holder (8) and secure it with four fillister head screws 3.5x9.5 (6).

0 Reconnect the EWS control module (30) and secure it to the amplifier holder (8) with plastic nuts (10) 10 mm.

Branch A3 must not be extended. Ensure a good earth contact, a poor earth contact will impair the function.�

Connect branch A3, brown cable, to the earth post X1108 on the A pillar and secure it with the existing nut (30).

0 Cut off branch A5, red cable, crimp on the contact (16) and connect it to the free PIN in the fuse holder B1 on the voltage supply cable B.Connect branch B2 to the B+ post (30).Secure the fuse holder B1 to the standard wiring harness with a cable tie.

0 If necessary, disconnect the white 12-pin connection plug X13321 and the black 12-pin connection plug X13598 from the new generation radio connection plug (30) on the audio wiring harness (31) and connect them to the new generation radio connection plug A1 on the radio/amplifier adapter cable A.

0 Affix a rattle guard (19) to a second rattle guard (19) and then affix them to the wiring harness so that the plug connector A2+30 is wrapped in them.

0 Connect branch A1 on the new generation radio and connect the radio.

9. To install the amplifier (cars with an on-board monitor radio only)

Only use the original template from the installation kit.�

Hold the template (12) on the rear of the amplifier holder (20), as shown in the Figure, and drill holes with a diameter of 4.5 mm at the marked points (30).Remove the template (12), deburr the holes and protect them from corrosion as set out in the BMW regulations.

0 Place washers (18) on the fillister head screws 3.5x16 (7). Secure the amplifier (4) to the amplifier holder (20), as shown in the figure, with two spacer sleeves (9), length 6 mm, and two each of the fillister head screws 3.5x16 (7) and 3.5x9.5 (6).

0

Before installing the amplifier (4) connect the radio/amplifier adapter cable A to the amplifier.�

Attach branch A4, 25-pin socket casing to the plug strip (30) and press it in the direction indicated by the arrow with a large flat screwdriver (31) until it audibly engages in the amplifier casing.

The figure shows the boot at the rear left.�

Place the amplifier holder (20) with the amplifier (4) on the two bottom stud bolts (30) and the two side stud bolts (31).

0 Secure the amplifier holder (20) to the stud bolts (30) using four hexagonal nuts M6 (22) and to the M6 thread (31) in the inside closing panel (32) using a hexagonal screw with washer M6x12 (21).

Branch A3 must not be extended. Ensure a good earth contact, a poor earth contact will impair the function.�

Connect branch A3, brown cable, to the earth post X13016 above the wheel arch and secure it with the existing nut (30).

0 Cut off branch A5, red cable, crimp on the contact (16) and connect it to the free PIN in the fuse holder B1 on the voltage supply cable B.Connect branch B2 to the B+ post (30).Secure the fuse holder B1 to the standard wiring harness with a cable tie.

0 If necessary, disconnect the white 12-pin connection plug X13321 and the black 12-pin connection plug X13598 from the new generation radio connection plug (30) on the audio wiring harness (31) and connect them to the new generation radio connection plug A1 on the adapter wiring harness A.

Affix the foam tape (14) to the existing seal (30) on the speaker (1).

Place the speaker (1) on the door (30) and secure it with the existing Philips screws (31).Connect the speaker (1) to the existing plug casing (32).

Place the speaker (2) on the door (30) and secure it with the existing Philips screws (31).Connect the speaker (2) to the plug casing (32).Affix the foam ring (13) to the existing seal (33).

15. Function/Commissioning

Function

The commissioning work and operation are described in the customer information for the radio and sound module system supplied with this installation kit.

Commissioning

After switching on the radio the volume control may only be set to “louder” very slightly.�

To prevent damaging the audio system the BMW sound module system is fitted with a delayed switch-on system.The amplifier does not come into full operation until 2 – 6 seconds after the radio is switched on.

Make sure that you inform the customer of this specially when you hand the car back to him.

Further information on setting the radio to obtain optimal sound reproduction from the BMW sound module system is provided in the customer information supplied with this installation kit.
