BMW profits beat expectations(BMW CCA News | Posted On May. 3, 2012)

BMW, the world's largest maker of luxury vehicles, reported first-quarterprofits that beat analysts' expectations, as demand for the revamped 1Series fueled record deliveries.

Earnings before interest and taxes rose 19 percent to $2.8 billion from$2.34 billion a year earlier, the company said Thursday. The figure beatthe $2.26 billion average estimate of nine analysts surveyed byBloomberg. Sales rose 14 percent to $23.8 billion, outpacing the 11percent rise in deliveries.

"The higher revenue gain shows that prices increased, which led tohigher profit," said Hans-Peter Wodniok, an analyst at Fairesearch inKronberg, Germany. "The sport-utility vehicles did very well and the 1-Series shot off like a rocket."

BMW stuck to its target of increasing pretax earnings for the full year,

with the auto unit generating a margin at the upper end of the 8 percentto 10 percent range. The company is counting on demand for a newgeneration of the best-selling 3 Series sedan, which was introduced inFebruary, to boost deliveries and offset development costs for the i3battery- powered city car, which will be rolled out next year.

BMW shares rose as much as 3.6 percent to $95.75 and were up 2.1percent as of 9:35 a.m. in Frankfurt trading. The stock has risen 41percent this year, making it the top- performing carmaker in the 14-member Euro Stoxx Autos and Parts Index and valuing the company at$60,58 billion.

The car and motorcycle manufacturer is expanding to fend off efforts byVolkswagen AG's Audi and Daimler AG's Mercedes- Benz to grab thesales lead in luxury autos. The maker of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Roycemodels will start production at a second plant in China later this monthbut has temprarily shelved plans in Brazil.

BMW's auto unit recorded 11.6 percent return on sales, down from an11.9 percent margin a year ago. The figure beat Audi's 11.4 percentreturn and Mercedes's 8.4 percent. BMW's auto deliveries rose to arecord 425,528 vehicles in the first quarter from 382,758 a year earlier,as 1-Series sales climbed 20 percent and the X3 SUV surged 55

percent.BMW spent $650 million in the second half of 2011 to introduce newmodels, weakening margins. Investments to introduce the "i" electric-carsub-brand and to expand into new markets will probably burden profitmore in 2012 than last year, Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichinersaid in March.

The world's top three upscale carmakers are all projecting sales recordsthis year on growth in China and recovering spending in the U.S. BMWis targeting sales of at least 2 million vehicles by 2016 after delivering1.67 million in 2011.

BMW expects deliveries in 2012 to rise even as the debt crisis inEurope softens demand in its home region, backed by new versions ofthe 1 and 3 Series and a new four-door version of the 6-Series luxurycoupe. The company has projected sales this year to rise by at least 10percent in China and by a "high single-digit" rate in North America, offsetting a market decline of as much as 5 percent in Europe. ––Paul Duchene

DTM: Spengler Earns BMW’s First Win On Series ReturnDriving the BMW M3 DTM, Bruno Spengler won the second DTM round of the yearat Lausitzring, the first DTM race win for BMW in 20 years.

Driving the BMW M3 DTM, Canadian Bruno Spengler won the second DTM round of the year atLausitzring and thus secured a DTM race win for the brand from Munich after 20 years.

―I can hardly believe it. On Saturday, the first pole after 20 years, today the 50th DTM race win forBMW achieved by me. I had goose bumps all over. I will never forget this weekend‖, the 28-year oldwinner said.

Behind him was

second-placed GaryPaffett with the DTMMercedes AMG C-Coupé, who had wonthe season opener atHockenheim, andBrazilian AugustoFarfus crowned theperfect weekend forBMW by finishingthird.

In total, 72,000spectators watchedthe three-way battleof the premiummanufacturers Audi,BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the Lausitz

region. On the way to the tenth DTM race win of his career, Spengler showed a dominant performance andstrong nerves. From the very beginning, he had to withstand the attacks from Paffett, who hadovertaken Farfus at the start and from then on kept the pressure on Spengler. ―I have tried everythingto overtake Bruno, but today, I didn’t succeed. We could have won, but we still extend our points’ leadwith this second-place finish, which is great‖, Paffett said about his situation.

Mattias Ekström ended up as the best-placed Audi driver. The Swede with the Audi A5 DTM, whofinished fifth behind Brit Jamie Green (Mercedes-Benz), said after the race: ―Today, we couldn’t doany better. Here, we still lacked the pace to win the race. But today, we still have learned a lot again, which is the most important thing. And I have scored further valuable points. The season is still long.‖

Ekström’s fellow Audi driver, two times’ DTM champion Timo Scheider, was able to improve fromtwelfth place on the grid to finish sixth after the 52 lap race. Reigning DTM champion Martin Tomczykfinished seventh and became the third BMW driver to score points. The two Audi drivers EdoardoMortara from Italy and Portuguese Filipe Albuquerque and Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes-Benz)rounded out the top ten.

American Joey Hand finished 14th for BMW after a pit strategy choice had the rookie driver runningthe longest on each set of tires, pitting last on both occasions.

―In actual fact, that did not go so badly," he said. "I had a difficult start, as I had Andy Priaulx directly in

front of me. I had to hold back, in order to avoid risking contact. In the race, the balance of mySAMSUNG BMW M3 DTM was absolutely fine. That was only my second race in the DTM, and I mustcontinue to work on my performance. I will improve and learn a lot from race to race.‖

Joey Hand set the fifth-fastest lap of the 52-lap race.

BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt applauded the efforts of Spengler to return the manufacturerto the victory column so early in its return to the DTM.

―Most certainly, this is a very special moment which we didn’t expect this way. This fantastic victory byBruno Spengler is the crown on a week, which was quite something. Firstly, we had our strongcomeback weekend at Hockenheim, then our maiden pole-position yesterday and today, in only oursecond race, already the first victory in our new DTM era. This is fantastic, simply unbelievable, absolutely awesome!‖

In the drivers’ standings, Paffett remains in the lead with 43 points from his fellow Mercedes-Benzdriver Green (30 points). Spengler and Ekström are tied in fourth place with 25 points each (Source:Speed/Foxsports Posted May 06, 2012 )

FALL-LINE MOTORSPORTS (GS) MAINTAINS 2ND AND 3RD PLACE IN 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP AFTERHOMESTEAD Buffalo Grove, IL, (May 1, 2012)—- Fall-Line Motorsports worked veryhard all winter andsince the first race of the season to prepare their BMW M3s and lead

the way of the BMW top teams. Fall-Line came to Homestead with thedesire to do well and achieve another strong performance in aContinental Tire Sports Car Challenge race with their three BMW M3s.The result is that neither one of the three cars entered by Fall-Line wasable to keep up with the leading cars in the race nor finish in the top fivein Southern Florida. The competition seems to now have a seriousadvantage over the BMW GS cars which have been running with addedweight since Daytona. The field does not look too even any longer and itis tough to compete with the leading Porsches, Subaru, Aston Martins

and Ford Mustangs.

Despite this disadvantage the Fall-Line drivers did their job and drovehard to score the best result they could. The 45 B+ Foundation  – JetsetMagazine Fall-Line BMW co-driven by Al Carter finished 8th. The 46BCKSTGR Fall-Line BMW co-driven by Mark Boden and Bryan Sellers,24th due to several incidents and the 48 OMP Fall-Line BMW co-drivenby Charles Putman and Charles Espenlaub, 6th.

After three races, the Fall-Line Motorsports 45 and 48 BMWs were ableto stay in the top three in the championship. The 48 OMP Fall-LineBMW of Putman and Espenlaub is now ranked 2nd in points with 83points after Homestead and the 45 of Carter and Plumb is 3rd. with 81 points.
