    Medicine Warriors,

As Veterans Day and Thanksgiving approaches take a minute to remember why we serve this great

nation and what each and everyone of you are thankful for. Both holidays are for reflection of the

past. We take time out on Veterans Day to remember all the millions of brave warriors who have

served and still serve this nation. I personally want to thank each and everyone of you and your

families for your service to the greatest country on Earth. Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks

for all that we have. Mostly take a few minutes that day and reflect on what you are thankful for.

For many of us, family and a sense of belonging are what many of us are thankful for. Have a won-

derful Thanksgiving and pray for our brothers and sisters who are still in harms way.

    Hello Medicine Warrior Team!

What a wonderful time of the year as we reflect on those blessings we have had bestowed upon as. Thanks-giving is a wonderful opportunity to thank those around us who have provided support to each of us and our

Families through the good and the tough times. Personally, I am so very grateful to have a loving and sup-portive Family and a great group of friends who continue to guide me daily. Find those people in your life

and thank them for all that they do!

This coming month is full of excitement with all the activities we have on our plate! Besides the LeadershipConference being held 15-18 November, as well as the Resiliency Training for some of our Soldiers, we

also have our upcoming Sports Competition (21-23 November). Thanks to the 514th Ground AmbulanceCompany, the leader of this event, we will have numerous athletic events ranging from Volleyball, Basket-

ball, kickball, and tug-a-war, just to name a few. In addition, HHD/56th MMB is sponsoring the first everMedicine Warrior Hash Run! For those of you new to the concept of a Hash Run...just get ready to run

around post and ensure you have identified one really good runner who is ready to forge ahead and look forthe right trail! Also this month, we have numerous retreats that Chaplain Bankston has put together forour Soldiers and their Family Members. If you have not had the opportunity to attend one, I encourage youto do so. Having attended my first one with my Family this past month, I not only learned a lot that I canuse towards my marriage with my husband, but I was given the opportunity to spend some quality time with

my Family in a great part of the county! All of this thanks to the Army!

Most importantly, we have two 4-day training holidays; Veterans Day and Thanksgiving! What a greatopportunity to spend some time with your Family and visit some of the great locations in and around Wash-

ington. There are very few, if any, organizations that allow us to have 4-day weekends and I for one amvery grateful for this time. During this time off, I ask that you reflect on all of those whom have served

before us or who are currently deployed in support of our Nation. Bless them for their safe return and also

bless their Families as many of them are spending time away from a loved one.

In closing, thank you all for what you do and the energy and support you provide this organization. Each ofyou are so instrumental in our success and the success of our individual Soldiers! To our Families...you are

truly amazing. Thanks for your continued support.

Medicine Warrior Soldier of the Month

The Medicine Warrior of the Month nomination was SPC Edy Vergara. The I Corps COMET team rated his managed armsroom, 218th Medi-cal Detachment (R)(P), 56th MMB, 62nd Med Bde as COMMENDABLE during an annual physical security inspection. His superior knowledge

of arms room procedures impressed the installation security personnel. SPC Vergara has gone above and beyond what has been expected ofhim. He has never failed to be one of the most dependable Soldiers in the 56th MMB. SPC Vergara has also performed multiple duties outside

his MOS such as managing areas of supply and vehicle maintenance .

    Safety Message

    Dont Drive Impaired!

First, let's define "impairment." Webster's New World Dictionary defines impairment as "making something worse, less, weaker, or

damaged." Applied to driving, impairment means there is a factor present that decreases your ability to operate your vehicle safely.

The first thing that comes to most folks' minds is impairment through alcohol or other drugs. There are others as well: impairment

through fatigue, or as a result of disabling injuries or illness. Alcohol is a prime cause of impairment. Since it acts as a depressant, it

begins to diminish a person's abilities with the first sip. Many people do not realize that even at very low blood alcohol levels, way

before reaching any "legal limit," impairment of physical and mental abilities is occurring.

What's worse, it acts on the very skills and abilities you need most as a driver: judgment, vision, and the ability to do sev eral things at

once. Since alcohol slows your mind and your motor skills, it has a dramatic effect on your reaction time and distance. If impairment

causes your reaction time to double, for example, at 70 mph that can result in an additional 103 feet traveled. Obviously, this could

mean the difference between a miss and a collision. Driving with other impairments could have similar results.

We all have the obligation to make sure we are able to drive safely whenever we operate our vehicle. Ask yourself, "Am I safe todrive? Am I rested? Am I ill? Have I taken medications that might affect my abilities? Are my limbs available for use? Has it been long

enough since I had that drink for the alcohol to have worked its way through my system?" (Generally, the body can eliminate one drink

per hour, and, contrary to popular beliefs, nothing can speed up that process.) Do I have my glasses on, if needed?" Only if you can

answer yes to all these questions should you exercise your privilege to drive.

So, again, practice paying 100% attention to your driving, drive at a reasonable speed, never drive impaired, and buy and learn how to

use safety systems correctly. These ideas are the foundation of any defensive driving system.

safety and accomplishing the mission. We

are fortunate to have Soldiers that are giving

their best on a daily basis.

October was a busy month with invento-

ries at Ft. Lewis and training taking place

at McChord and Bremerton. We are also

making preparations for the FTXs in

    December and January.

SSG Conlon made it safely to Ft. Jackson

where he is participating in training for a

month. When he returns it will be time to

pack up the household goods and PCS to

    Hammer Soldiers, Friends and Familyon

behalf of the entire HHD team I would like

to thank you for your continued hard work

and support over this last month. I

was fortunate to have been chosen to assume

    command of HHD during CPT

    Williams absence while she ex-

celled at the Ft. Sam Houston Pa-

    tient Administration

    course whereupon she recently

    returned as the distinguished honor

    graduate; congratulations CPT Wil-

liams! Despite the temporary lossof our fearless leader, HHD hasnt missed a

beat with the continual operations and mis-

sion support. One such example has been the

tireless work put into the preparation for the

Corps level commodity area COMET inspec-

tions. While this inspection is geared towards

the beneficial realignment of units with cur-

rent regulations and operating procedures, any

HHD Soldier will testify COMET inspec-

tors are likened to that of a hybrid between

a white gloved Drill Sergeant and Sherlock

Holmes and will investigate each supply

    record, maintenance report, and publication

with a fine toothed comb. However, despite

the impending inspection, HHDs true grit

shined through multiple long days of prepa-

ration highlighting teamwork, and a collec-

tive vision for success. This hard work paid

off as HHD scored the highest number of

passed commodity areas within the BN to

    include five perfect scores.

I also have to highlight the team effort in

bringing home our brothers and sisters of

the 98th Combat Stress Control Detachment

after their 9 month deployment to Iraq.

This unit has served in a multitude

    of locations providing necessary

mental health support as well as

    the comforting support of genu-

    inely concerned Soldiers and lead-

    ers. After final preparations word

of their return, HHD Soldiers co-

ordinated every necessary step toensure the Soldiers returned safely and

efficiently to their familiesand even in

    time to trick-or-treat.

Again, it has been an privilege to serve as

the commander for these last few weeks,

and Im proud of all the Soldiers and fami-

lies of this command. ~1LT Craig Aman

    M E DICINE WARRIOR!

Chaplains CornerI have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. (Philippians 4:11)

Paul, while being denied every comfort, wrote the above words from a dark prison cell. A story is told of a king who went to his garden onemorning, only to find everything withered and dying. He asked the oak tree that stood near the gate what the trouble was. The oak said it wastired of life and determined to die because it was not tall and beautiful like the pine tree. The pine was troubled because it could not beargrapes like the grapevine. The grapevine was determined to throw its life away because it could not stand erect and produce fruit as large as

peaches. The geranium was fretting because it was not tall and fragrant like the lilac. And so it went throughout the garden. Yet coming to a

violet, the king found its face as bright and happy as ever and said, Well, violet, Im glad to find one brave little flowerin the midst of thisdiscouragement. You dont seem to be the least disheartened. The violet responded, No, Im not. I know Im small, yet I thought if youwanted an oak or a pine or a peach tree or even a lilac, you would have planted one. Since I knew you wanted a violet, Im determined to be

the best little violet I can be. Others may do a greater work, But you have your part to do; And no one in all Gods family Can do it as well asyou. People who are Gods without reservation have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. His will becomes theirwill, and theydesire to do for Him whatever He desires them to do. They strip themselves of everything, and in their nakedness find everything restored ahundredfold.

    Thanks and God bless,

Thank you to all the family members that

have supported your Soldiers through thisbusy summer into the fall. Without your

support at home, your Soldier couldnt per-form as well here at work. Just to name a fewof the successes during the month of Septem-

ber and October, the detachment recovered

from a highly productive seven day FieldTraining Exercise with the 2-12 Field Artil-lery Battalion here on JLMB. After our re-covery operations we moved directly into

deployment preparations for New Dawn. Asyou all know, our preparations were cut shortafter we were notified that the detachment has

been off-ramped from New Dawn. That has-

nt slowed down our op-tempo though, last

month the detachment spent a few days on

the range conducting weapons training in-

    cluding NBC and night fire.

In addition to the detachment deploymentand weapons training last month, this monththe detachment scored over 94% in 5 areas

of the Command Maintenance Evaluationand Training Team Inspection that took

place the first week of October. This inspec-tion was a comprehensive evaluation of thedetachment maintenance and supply pro-grams and will ultimately improve the de-

tachments readiness to deploy as well asour systems to maintain. All Soldiers helped

prepare for the inspection, but SSG Nurse

(TMDE/Drivers Training), SPC Hitt(Communication), SPCAlaniz (Supply) were key to
