Re : NA Purchase Order R65LD-903284

Dear Mr . Wright :

1-519 3

Attached hereto are the dater analyses for Well i6 and Well 47 .The quantitative chemical analysis shows these two well watersto be similar in character to the waters of Well 45 and Well 4lsA .

__You will note th.AD Nell- #7 has 0.6 ppm of iron similar to Well AAwhich gives a reddish precipitate on aeration and standing . ThepH of both waters is relatively low, although still on thealkaline side .

The sample taken at the SRE pond does not show any unusual con-centrations . The rather high sodium shown in the spectrographicanalysis could be accounted for by NaCl used for softener regen-eration. Since this sample was taken right after a rain it maynot be indicative of actual ponded water conditions .

A minimum check on the sample from the closed system SRE heatexchanger showed pH 9 .5 , Hardness 111.0 pp

mas CaCO3, and Fe 50 ppm .

This high iron shows that serious corrosion is occurring in thissystem and confirms visual observations .

Very truly yours ,

y & wsSTCOTT

Attention : Mr. Marvin J. Eudroff

Gentlemen;

Seven copies of our "Report of Foundation Investigation ,

Proposed Delta Rocket Test Stands and Appurtenant Structures, Rocket Engine

Field Laboratory , Santa Susana , California , for North American Aviation,

Inc ." are herewith submitted . The scope of the investigation was planned

in collaboration with Mr. Naas W. Msier of your firm .

Sandstone bedrock underlies the site and either is exposed at the

ground surface or is encountered at shallow depths . All of the structures,

with the exception of those subject to large uplift loads , may be supported

upon spread foundations . Drilled cast-in-place concrete piles are recom-

mended for support of structures subject to large uplift loads .

Yours very truly,

The site was explored by drilling 12 boles ranging in depths from

20 to 75 feet, utilizing diamond drilling equipment . Continuous cores of

the sandstone formation were taken with an NX core barrel . Rook and over-

burden soil were examined by our engineer on the site. A Log of Borings

is presented on Plates A-1 to A-4 . The percentage of recovery obtained

daring rock coring is noted on the left of the Log of Borings.

The soil samples and rock cores were examined in the field and in

laboratory . Since the soil and rock are similar to that encountered at

the Bravo and Coca areas, and the rook is somewhat more sound , no additional

tests wars performed .

suasrCT Analysis of Reclamation : a cr fron 13owal Area

References Research Memo 172/9;, "Analysis of Rcclanatior. Vater from Bowl Area," dated28 June 1957 .

As previously reported, tr'e bowel area at Santa Susena is using water fromthe stern,o pond located in tic I.M-Ter test stand area . This water is used fora two-fold purpose, i . e ., for ~ooliri : . i'larie buckets during firinis and fortest stand fire extin-richcr :s . The o.xce~7sive amcunt of impurities present inthe water render it undesir-~,le for fire extinLuieher use . A water sample wassubrdtted by the Utilities Group of I duc.trial ErV.-ineerim for analysis androco mended treatment .

Corrparin{., the results of this latest analysis with previous ones, (seeTable I), a 25 to 50 pe c in"rease of suspended solids and conductivity isobserved . The total hardn-•ss and p11 }lave remained uncht .nged. Analysis forhydrogen sulfide gas revealed a fir- : pm concentration, which is consideredexcessive and highly corrosive . .

BC : C, Anselmo , Jr ., 55'5-63W, J . Gecka, 596-60 5 5

Removal of suspended solids as accomplished in the followinC manners

two cylinders, both containing approximately three and one-half fluid ouncesof bowl area water, were prepared and one-third of an ounce of filter alum(aluminum sulfate) was added to one . After six hours of standing, the parti-cles in the cylinder cont<iring filter alum settled to the bottom . An addi-tional 20 hours were required for the water in the untreated cylinder to reach

the same transparency as the treated one .

The water treatment recorunended in Research Memo 172/93 is consideredadecinto to remove both dissolved gasps (o . , hydro( ;uri sulfide ) and suspended

solids . If the water rrquirenents ar,3 such &at the settling time by natural

mennrs must be reduced . i}K;n a baffled floculating tank with a filter alum chem-ical feed pump should prncced the settling basin (page 3, RM 172/93) 0
