Dear Friends

Recently we organised a seminar on, Importance of Trees jointly with the National Society of the Friends ofthe Trees. The Hornbill house auditorium was packed to capacity with tree-lovers. Mr. Atul Sathe, our enthusiastic

PRO had displayed a famous poem written by poet and film personality, late Harindranath Chatopadhyay. It wastaken from a volume of Verse on Trees, dedicated to Dr. Richard St. Barbe Baker, founder of the Man of the Trees.

TREESEach time a tree is felled, God’s body cracksBled beyond humane sight, which hardly sees…

Alas! The very handle of the axeFelling His trees is tortured out of trees.

Pardon, O trees! The way they have behaved.Who, void of mercy, have been slaying you…

You must be saved, you surely shall be savedBy men whose hearts are merciful and true

A galaxy of speakers spoke on different aspects of trees and their importance in everyday life. We also honoredmembers of Save Rani Baug Committee who struggled hard to save 150 year old botanical garden at Byculla from

damage and destruction. All over India the process of development is taking a heavy toll of age-old trees and manyvigilant citizens are coming forward to save them. In Gujarat more and more cities are declaring their heritage

trees and are trying to make them a tourist attraction. Recently I spent a few days in Panchgani near Mahabaleshwar. On the main market road there are very old

trees which are beautifying the road. We shall write to the Panchgani municipality to save them at any cost. In manyold educational institutions in Panchgani spacious grounds are covered by old trees. In 5 acre forest of Anjumani-

Islam high school I saw a pair of Orange Minivet and Asian Paradise Flycatcher. Moral Re-Armament camp (MRA) atPanchgani wants to have joint projects with BNHS in study of birds. They have 70 acres of land covered with lush

green trees and well laid out gardens. They have recorded 120 species of birds visiting their campus. When theytook over the land a few decades back there were hardly any trees but over the years a large number of trees have

been planted and nurtured well. Panchgani is the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent a few days in the past. He alsoplanted a Gold mohur tree here but the tree did not survive very long. I was told that wood of this tree is preserved

in the Mahatma’s memory. This is a tree-planting time, and I hope that that you will be planting a few trees for a better quality of life.

Dr. Ashok S. Kothari

Hon. Secretary, BNHS
