orrosion Protection—Inspector’s Book of Reference is an English translation of the Norwegian handbook Overflatebehandling mot Korrosjon, which has been used in Norway for many years as an aid in training courses for candidates seeking certifi- cation as an inspector from FROSIO. The authors are Dag Kjernsmo, Kjell Kleven, and Jan Scheie. FROSIO, The Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors for Surface Treatment, was founded in 1986 with the aim of educating and certifying inspectors in surface treatment. For this purpose, a curriculum and an 80-hour training course were established, together with Norwegian Standard 476, Paint and Coatings—Approval and Certification of Surface Treatment Inspectors. Because Corrosion Protection covers all the items in the FROSIO curriculum, it should be a valu- able source for students to obtain the knowledge needed to pass the theoretical and practical examinations. The book’s 15 chapters cover all aspects of corrosion protection, from the basics of corrosion and its protection, to equipment for surface preparation and application, basic coatings technology, paint failures, inspection methods, and inspection equipment. Other chapters address pre- treatments, thermal spraying, passive fire protection, con- crete repair, and other coating systems. The authors also treat major components of health and safety as well as quality management systems and procedures. Each chapter opens with the objective of the chapter and ends with sample questions so that readers can check their understanding of the topic. The chapters are written in a style that is easy to read; the book also contains ample illustrations to help the reader understand the topic. Accompanying the chapter on inspection methods is a use- ful appendix that clearly explains the procedure for carry- ing out the most common standard inspection tests. Equally clear and helpful is the last chapter on economic considerations and calculations. In summary, this book is a very good text for anyone involved in the field of corrosion protection with coatings, and it is additionally useful for inspectors seeking certifica- tion by other organisations. Marianne Groth and Inge Sørensen translated the book from the Norwegian. The English edition (ISBN 87-989694-0- 4) has been published by Hempel Service Academy, Denmark, and can be ordered from [email protected].
