Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) End of Grade and End of Course Tests SY 2018-19 At the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, Board Members were presented a report on student achievement on GMAS End of Grade and End of Course assessments during the past school year. Key points include: The district continues to strengthen performance in math, achieving both one- and three-year gains and meeting or exceeding the comparison group at the elementary, middle, and high school level. At the high school level, the district outperformed its comparison group in all four content areas and surpassed the comparison group in every individual EOC subject except Economics. The district is making the greatest gains and meeting improvement targets for all content areas in middle grades and high school. Although the district made progress in elementary grades math, overall the elementary grades did not meet the annual target and fell below the comparison group in all content areas except math. Under the direction of Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung International, Inc.; final construction bid documents were prepared and issued for the project. Highlights from the October 2, 2019 Board Meeting

Academic Progress! ESPLOST Updates

Cost Adjustment for Jenkins High ESPLOST Project Approved

On July 11, 2018, the Board approved the award of RFP #C18-23, Construction

Manager at Risk (CMR) for the Jenkins High School Replacement Project to JE Dunn

Construction Company with an Initial Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) of

$55,000,000.00. Under the direction of Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung International,

Savannah Music Festival Musical Explorers Program

Also at the Informal Meeting, Board Members received a presentation on the Musical

Explorers Program sponsored by the Savannah Music Festival and plans for the Savannah

Jazz Academy. The initiative is scheduled to begin in January and will provide students who

participate with instruments, private and group lessons, and academic tutoring. Many thanks

to the Savannah Music Festival for their continued collaboration with our schools!

SCCPSS Counselor Recognized with Yale Educator Award

Former Savannah Early College School Counselor Ms. Lisa Hickson has been selected as a

recipient of the 2019 Yale Educator Award. The award, sponsored by the Yale Office of

Undergraduate Admissions, recognizes educators from around the world who inspire and

support their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence. Ms. Hickson was

nominated by a former Early College student who is now a freshman at Yale. Ms. Hickson is

currently counseling students at Godley Station K8.

National Principals Month is observed each October through the advocacy of the American

Federation of School Administrators, the National Association of Elementary School

Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, where school

leaders are put in the spotlight for their endless commitment to high quality principalship.

SCCPSS Custodians Recognized for National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day

Tuesday, October 2, 2019 is National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day. Whitney

Administrative Complex Custodian Linda Singleton was called forward to represent her

colleagues across the district in appreciation for all they do. Thanks to ALL our amazing

custodians for keeping our facilities neat and clean!

October 14-18, 2019 Proclaimed National School Lunch Week

The Board recognized National School Lunch Week as a way to continue to encourage

all residents to become aware and concerned about their children’s, and their own,

nutrition habits in hope of achieving a healthier citizenry for today and for the future.

School Bus Safety and Transportation Appreciation Week

The Board proclaimed the week of October 21-25, 2019 School Bus Safety and

Transportation Appreciation Week in recognition of the contribution drivers and other

Board Policy DCC – Budget Preparation Procedures has been created to outline

procedures related to budget preparation. Policy DCC had been previously presented for

first read on August 14. The policy was pulled in September for further review and

modification. The policy as currently written is now being presented for first reading during

the October 2, 2019 meeting.

Revised Training Plan (goals 1, 2, 3, 4) Georgia Boards of Education are required to

submit an annual Local Board Governance Training Plan and a Local Board Governance Annual Training Report to the Georgia Department of Education. BOARD MATTERS: FY 2019-20 Local Board Governance Training Plan (Goals 1, 2,

3, 4) Georgia Boards of Education are required to submit a Local Board Governance

with and approved the Local Board Governance Training Plan for the Savannah-Chatham

County Board of Public Education for FY 2019-20. The plan is due to the State Department

of Education by October 15, 2019.

and Exhibit can be deleted from the policy manual. District Administration has determined

a need for changes in the Policy. The policy was presented for second read and adopted.
