Board of County Commissioners
Agenda Request
Date of Meeting: November 17, 2015
Date Submitted: November 3, 2015
To: Honorable Chairperson and Members of the Board
From: Robert M. Presnell, County Administrator
Curtis Young, Public Works Director
Subject: Approval to Purchase Six Dump Trucks
Statement of Issue:
This agenda item seeks Board approval for the purchase of six dump trucks; piggybacking on the
City of Tallahassee’s Bid No.0021-11-KR-RC.
Background:
Currently six existing dump trucks at Public Works are due to be replaced. The current budget
reflects the amount of $120,000 to replace the trucks. This amount is based on leasing the
equipment. There were originally seven due to be replaced but one was in an accident and has
been totaled by the insurance company. In the past, piggybacking off another municipality’s bid
has been acceptable.
Analysis:
After further review of the leasing option, Public Works has determined it would be more
beneficial to purchase the new dump trucks off the City of Tallahassee’s bid. The bid was
awarded to Capital Truck in May 2011, with the price of $147,500 per truck. The bid/contract is
has a term for a period of five years, with an extension of an additional five years if needed. The
amount Capital Truck is offering is cheaper than the Florida Sheriff’s Association bid price of
$153,257.00 per truck.
Fiscal Impact:
The total amount for six new Mack dump trucks is $885,000 at Capital Trucks. This vendor has
offered a trade-in value of $308,000 for Public Works’ six dump trucks. Also, the amounts paid
to Public Works, by the insurance company for loss of the totaled truck is $56,000, will also go
against the total amount for trucks.
11
The County will need to add an additional $401,000 to the Public Works current budget of
$120,000 to purchase the six new dump trucks.
