Memorandum Date: January 16, 2019 To: Board of Education From: Eileen Sadlowski, Secretary-Treasurer/CFO
Action Item: Sports Fields for George Elliot Secondary and H.S. Grenda Middle Schools
1.0 ISSUE STATEMENT
In order to have the new George Elliot Secondary/H.S. Grenda Middle sports fields ready for September 2019, development planning has begun. Once the fields are completed, construction can begin on the new H.S. Grenda Middle School.
2.0 RELEVANT BOARD MOTION/DIRECTION
None. 3.0 BACKGROUND
A meeting to begin planning for the sports fields located beside George Elliot Secondary School and the new H.S. Grenda Middle School was held December 13, 2018. Representatives from CHP Architects, School District Administration, George Elliot Secondary Administration, George Elliot Phys Ed Department and School District Grounds personnel were in attendance. School Personnel shared their wish list regarding the field developments in order to maximize learning opportunities for students at George Elliot Secondary and the new H.S. Grenda Middle School. A preferred option for field placement has been determined and is included in Appendix A. The field design includes one traditional school field and a second field surrounded by a Track and Field track.
4.0 POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION
4.1 Field development is scheduled to begin in February, 2019 in order to have the fields prepared for September, 2019.
4.2 Development prior to April is necessary in order to perform work that will not disrupt environmental concerns regarding nesting schedules for birds or hibernation schedules for turtles.
4.3 The desired design has been determined based on proximity to the planned pathway as well as the existing Clubhouse which can potentially be used for student change rooms/washrooms.
4.4 Placement of the fields allows for more coordinated access as well as maximum flexibility to the areas identified for future development.
4.5 The proposed running track would be beneficial for the school as well as the Lake Country community as there is none existing in the community at this time. This could be used for Track and Field events as well as a Community Walking Track.
4.6 Fields would have a North/South orientation which is preferred for all activities.

5.0 SECRETARY-TREASURER/CFO'S COMMENTS The proposed design and placement of the fields offers the maximum benefit to the school as well as provides for an excellent resource for the Community. Preliminary work to prepare the site will begin in February, 2019
6.0 STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
THAT: The Board approve the recommended Field Design Plan, including a track and field oval, for the sports fields located beside George Elliot Secondary School and the new H.S. Grenda Middle School.
AND THAT: Staff continue discussions with the District of Lake Country regarding joint use
opportunities and future field development beside George Elliot Secondary School and the new H.S. Grenda Middle School.
