In his speech, he shared the lessons he hadlearnt in his life with the Indian young men and women. He also presented a list of qualities that they should follow to achieve success.

Man is an admixture of weaknesses and strengths. If we always think of the demerits, we will become pessimists. But, when we look at our strengths, we will become optimists. That's why Azim Premji says that wemust always begin with our own strengths. It is the best way to achieve what we want in our lives.

If we start using our strengths, it will increase our self- confidence. It also gives energy to correct or reducethe weaknesses. The parents asked the rabbit to forget hopping and concentrate on swimming. Finally the rabbit

A: 'How to live to be 200' is a humorous, essay written by Stephen Leacock. In the essay Leacock makes fun ofhealth freaks who do absurd things in their desire to lead a long life. Such people are ready to try out any newdiet or exercise programme. They put up with a lot of discomfort in their anxiety to be healthy. However, theirefforts are in vain as, often, they succumb to some minor ailment.

Leacock feels people should not be unduly concerned about their health. There is no need to follow extreme measures. He suggests that people should eat whatever they like without bothering too much about the contents.They should lead a relaxed life. They should not strain themselves with too much exercise. There is no point inliving if we cannot enjoy life.

2. "It is better to save two brothers or eight cousins rather than one brother". Illustrate?

A: Many animals and insects co-operate with closely related members of their group. The organism 'selects' relativesand helps them, though it may itself fail to reproduce or even survive. This is called 'Kin selection'. The organism shares many genes with the Kin, so by helping relatives, it ensures that there is a good chance that itsown genes are propagated. If one were to extend the logic, people are more likely to help those who are bloodrelatives than strangers, as they have shared genes. Helping relatives will increase the chances of transmission ofone's own genes to future generations.

The concept of Kin selection was first suggested by J.B.S. Haldane in 1955. Driving home the point, holdane jokingly says that he would not give up his life for the sake of just one brother. But he would do so to save twobrothers or eight cousins. Since 50% of his genetic material is identical to that of his brother, by saving two brothers he would ensure that all his genes lived on, in future generations. Similarly he shares 12.5% of commongenetical material with his cousin, so he would need to save eight cousins to ensure continuity of his genetic lineage.

The pesticides seep into the soil and poison the earth. The land becomes polluted andinfertile. But the farmer does not care about the damage to the environment. In the past, the farmer worshiped the land that he filled. Land was passed down from generation to generation.

1. Give a character analysis of Squealer the pig.

A: 'Animal Farm' Successfully presents how the mechanism of 'Propaganda' and 'brainwashing' works in a totalitarian regime by showing how the pigs could make the other animals believe practically anything.Responsible for the propaganda is squealer, a pig that 'Could turn black into white. He is a porker pig with "Veryround checks, twinklings eyes, nimble movements shrill voice." He is a brilliant talker. Squealer is the one whoconveys all the decisions taken by Nepaleon to the other animals. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the animals, Squealer lies to them about Napoleon's actions and reads out false statistics. He is Napoleon's mouthpiece and is responsible for making announcements to the animals. Napoleon slowly begins to isolate himself andmakes very few public appearances. Squealer manages to convince the other animals that it is for their sake thatthe pigs eat most of the apples and drink all the milk, that it is necessary for the pigs health as they are brainworkers. Squealer also justifies Napoleon's decision to stop all public meetings by changing the rule from"all animals are equal" to "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others". He tells the animals thatNapoleon's original opposition to the windmill had merely been a matter of "tactics" to get rid of snowball whois a dangerous character. He spreads the rumour that Snowball is a threat to the farm and therefore needs to beexpelled. He says that leadership is a 'heavy responsibility' and the animals should be grateful to Napoleon fortaking this heavy burden upon himself. He constantly changes the Seven Commandments to suit the pig's needsand convinces the animals that what they saw may have been something they 'dreamed'. When everything elsefails, he uses the threat of 'Jones returning' to silence the animals.

Squealer's worst lies are about Boxer's death. After Benjamin reveals that Boxer had been taken away in a horse

slaughterer's van, Squealer tells them that the vehicle actually belongs to a doctor and the Boxer is being taken toa hospital.

Squealer, the key spokesman of the pigs has great powers of persuasion and he uses this on the gullible animals to distort the truth to control them. Orwell's portrayal of Squealer is meant to ridicule the Russian press,which slavishly served Stalin just as Squealer on 'Animal Farm's is servile to Napoleon. It is also said that thecharacter of Squealer is modelled on molotov, Stalin's Prime Minister and spokesman.

2. Bring out the contrast in the character of Snowball and Napoleon.

A: 'Animal Farm' is not only a charming fable and a bitter political satire; it is also on allegory. The main characters are the animals of whom the pigs are the most important. From among the class of the pigs two leaders emerge. These leaders are Napoleon, who represents Stalin and the other is Snowball, who is said to bebased on Leon Trotsky.

Of all the animals, Snowball and Napoleon are the most educated and powerful animals on the farm.Napoleon is a large fierce - looking boar who has reputation for "getting his own way". He is not much of a

talker but is very domineering. Snowball is a "more vivacious pig, quicker in speech and more inventive". He

can impress the animals with his eloquent speeches and can sway their judgment. He is can did and open in hismethods while Napoleon works in devious ways.

Snowball is a flower of old major's teaching and works hard for the betterment of the farm. In the beginning,after driving away Mr. Jones, Napoleon fights along with Snowball, but later he manipulates the situation so as

to take compete control over the running of the farm. Snowball takes a very active role in working of AnimalFarm and has many plans for the technological development of the farm. He passionately pursues his idea ofinstalling a windmill in the farm to generate electricity. He is also courageous and brave and leads the animals tovictory at the Battle of the cowshed. He believes in a democratic system of functioning and so he steps up committees and meetings giving an opportunity for all the animals to voice their opinions. Thus he wished toempower the weaker sections. But Napoleon only wishes to have all the power for himself. He bitterly objects toevery scheme or proposal that Snowball puts forward. Napoleon is very secretive and works in a stealthy with thesheep who are trained to bleat a slogan, "Four legs good, Two legs bad" to interrupt the animal's meetings.Whenever Snowball is about to score a point against him. He also secretly rears a number of dogs and trains themto obey his order. Napoleon and Snowball compete for leadership and when a meeting is organised to discussSnowballs proposal to build a windmill, Napoleon's ambitions nature surfaces. He lets the dogs loose on Snowballand has them chase him off the farm and there by succeeds in his real of becoming the sole leader of the animals.He uses Snowball as a scape-goat, blaming him for all the things that go wrong on the farm, including the destruction of the windmill, thereby destroying Snowballs great reputation forever. Snowball eventually becomesa symbol of the enemy, leading to widespread terror among the animals. Ultimately Napoleon becomes a corrupt,cruel and despotic dictator who exploits the animals and their fear of Snowball. 3. Discuss the main events in the plot of 'Animal Farm'.

A: Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a fable about rulers and the ruled oppressors and the oppressed, and an ideabetrayed. It is a classic piece of satire and the main targets are the society that was created in Russia after theRevolution of 1917, and the leaders of the revolution. The events narrated in Animal Farm are an obvious reference to events in another story, the history of the Russian Revolution.

The novel is a series of many interesting events. Old Major's Speech is the first turning point. He inspires allanimals into action. He sings the rebellions song 'Beasts of England'. Napoleon, Snowball and Squalor give shape

to 'principles of Animalism.'

Jones's irresponsible nature ignites the revolt. Animals drive all men off the Farm. They rename 'Manor Farm''Animals Farm'. They frame their own rules and call them 'Seven Commandments'.

Jones tries to recapture the Farm. But he is beaten again in the Battle of Cowshed. Snowball and Boxer lead

the animals to victory.

Events centring round the windmill are probably the most important ones. Snowballs popularity over his proposal of the windmill ends in his expulsion. The building of the windmill reduces all animals to slaves. Themill collapses once and Frederick's men blast it again. Napoleon makes animals work for it once more. Boxerloses his life because of this heavy work. The mill's blast makes animals retaliate Frederick's men.

Squealer changes seven commandments to suit pig's interest. Pigs eat, drink, sleep in beds, dress like men,walk erect, carry whips and smoke. Ultimately Napoleon makes friend with men, behaves like men and changesthe Farm's name to 'Manor Farm'. Napoleon's power absolutely corrupts him.

Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is vividly and eloquently proved in Orwell'sshort novel 'Animal farm'.
