RE: Natural Gas Purchasing
Background:
The cost to purchase natural gas is a culmination of the following components:
A quoted cost (combination of “Basis” & “Delivery”) to provide gas to PECO The “Basis” is a market price for capacity and is traded on the NYMEX The “Delivery” is a fixed price per volume set by the supplier
New York Stock Exchange, NYMEX, trading price for natural gas
In January of 2016, the Board approved a natural gas purchasing agreement with UGI Energy Services for Low Volume Transport (LVT) and High Volume Transportation Service Interruptible (TSI) accounts, from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2018, for a Basis & Delivery charge of $1.096 per Dekatherm or less. As in the past, Amerex, our consultant, also used by many MCIU School Districts, will continue to monitor the trading price for natural gas and make (lock in) rate recommendations for the duration of the contract. Since the NYMEX pricing of natural gas varies throughout the year, it is recommended that the Director of Buildings & Grounds be given the authority to lock-in NYMEX pricing at various times during the 2017-18 school year, in an effort to provide cost efficient purchasing of natural gas. The estimated cost of natural gas for the District is $280,000.
