How would you feel boarding the Titanic? Would it differ depending

on what class you were?

Take notes as you watch the clips: Think about your emotions and

senses – what would you hear, see, smell as you board?

TASK

Your task today is to write a diary entry as if you were boarding the unsinkable ship and leaving the port. You will need to consider:

- What class you are;

- What form of transport you will use to get to Southampton;

- Your senses;

- What checks you may have to go through to board the ship;

- The size of the ship and the significance in History;

- Your emotions as your board the boat and when it departs to the ‘City of dreams’ (New York).

Read the WAGOLLs. What do you like? Magpie good ideas and

language choices.

April 10th 1912

Dear Diary,

At last: I had arrived at the start of my adventure! Proudly looming, high above me, stood a marvellous invention dominating the dock. Stunning. How could this floating palace be ‘unsinkable’? I certainly hope it is!

Screaming crowds and tearful farewells reverberated loudly around Southampton as I embarked the magnificent ship. The atmosphere was electric. Third-class passengers eagerly waited for the rest of us to board the monster of the sea – I’m sure their cheers could be heard in London when they finally got their feet on board.

Many people called the Titanic ‘The Ship of Dreams’ and indeed it was. As I crossed the bridge onto the boat destined for stardom, I felt a wave of excitement well up inside of me. My luggage was whisked away; my voyage had begun. Could this be a new life for me? After all, New York is the ‘City of dreams’!

Gazing over the edge, a sea of hands, hats and handkerchiefs filled the dockside. As if by magic, the magnificent propellers started to turn. The roar of the panoply of spectators grew louder: cheering crowds sung ‘Rule Britannia’ in unison as the almighty vessel set sail. How I hope this journey is one to remember; how I hope it doesn’t sink! Unlikely I know.

Must head off to explore what divine décor this sensational ship has to offer and admire the everlasting blue blanket rolling out in front of us.

Mrs Hall

First Class passenger
