provenance architecturalsthe vital link between what a material once was and what it can become

At Provenance Architecturals, we have extensive experience in salvaging architectural materials and unlocking their value by processing them for reuse. Our team provides this knowledge to our clients and supports them in their aim to reuse; whether they want to retain the character and history of the material, or incorporate it seamlessly into a new and modern space.

We proudly call Philadelphia, one of the oldest cities in America, our home. As a result, many of the reclaimed materials we offer also have a historical significance. In these cases, we honor this significance by uncovering the story behind them, their provenance, and sharing it with you.

In recent years, several vintage boardwalks constructed of ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”), have been demolished along the New York coastline.

Ipe, a native species from the rain-forest regions of South America, is known for its extreme durablity and rich color profile. Additional-ly ipe is one of the hardest woods in the world. It holds the same fire-safety rating as steel. Even with decades of exposure to the extreme conditions of the shore, this wood has stood the test of time.

The team at Provenance under-stands that efficient processing is the key to unlocking the value of any reclaimed material.

First, the boards were pressure-washed, de-nailed, and kiln-dried. Then we graded them by condition and inherent characteristics.

The finest quality boards were reserved for our flooring product. The outer layer, or “skins” of the boards, were saved and planed for consistency of thickness. Last, the top decking of the boardwalk was set aside and brushed to maintain the original face.

As a result, Provenance is able to offer three distinct reclaimed ipe products, suitable for a variety of projects and design styles.

flooring decking

Flooring is processed to reveal the rich color profile of the ipe. Here the material quality is emphasized by stripping away the weathered surface and revealing this woods’ timeless beauty. Stress-relief and tongue & groove standard.

*Available custom-milled to individual project specifications

Decking consists of the top portions of the boardwalk where exposure to wear and weathering was maximized. Here the history of the material is suggested visually by screw and nail holes left in place. Decking is suitable for both flooring and paneling projects.

*Available in 5/8” thick, original face or custom-milled to 3/4” thick face

skins

Skins are the outer layer of the support beams used in the boardwalk’s construction. Visually, theimpact of sun and sand on this material during its first life is the strongest. Skins are for projects looking to achieve a sense of rusticity and is suitable for both paneling and flooring projects.

*Available straight-line ripped or tongue & grooved - please note this product has limited availability.

The Court, housed under the portion of the building’s roof referred to as the “light box,” is designed to harness and bounce natural light down and into the adjoining gallery spaces, (pictured at left). Located just past the entrance, this rectangular space acts to orient visitors to the layout of the new building, as well as provides a natural resting place during their stay. After hours, the court will act as the main event space accommodating guests at a variety of functions.

Meticulously installed by Pennsylvania Flooring, the 5,800 square feet of ipe sits within a perimeter of stone in the Court and runs continuously onto the terrace, (pictured at left). The ipe is laid in a traditional herringbone pattern; inspired by an antique Chilean cathedral floor Williams and Tsien previously encountered. They chose to leave both the interior and exterior ipe unfinished to promote the natural distressing process.

The Barnes Foundation is currently aiming for LEED-platinum certification; the highest rating available by the Green Building Council. If achieved, the Barnes Foundation would be one of only a small number of cultural buildings in the United States with this distinction.
