Model 620 Loader Owner's Manual

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

T he Bobcat is designed with maximum operator safety in mind; however, no machine design can eliminate operator error or carelessness.

SAFETY Mounting & Dismounting

There is always the risk of injury t9 the operator if safety precautions are not observed during loader operation. Study the items -inside the front cover of this manual.

This machine should always be shut down and the bucket completely lowered before leaving the seat. If checks are to be made which require the machine to be running, it must first be raised and blocked so that all four wheels are off the ground.

Fueling operation must only be made after the engine has cooled and in a well ventilated area, which is free of sparks or open flame.

For your safety, please observe and follow all safety markings on the machine and caution statements in this manual.

MOUNTING & DISMOUNTING

When mounting or dismounting the Bobcat Loader, use the safety steps provided (Fig. 11. One is located on the cross member between the booms and the other is located in front of th~ _ pedals. -

After seating in the Bobcat, adjust the seat for comfort and fasten seat belt securely (Fig. 21.

1._ STEERING (Fig. 41: The steering levers, locat.ed to the right and left of the seat, control the forward, reverse, and turning of the machine. Push both levers ahead for forward travel (AI and pull both levers back for reverse travel (BI.

The machine is steered by moving one of the levers further ahead than the other. Moving the right lever further ahead than the left will cause the machine to turn to the left (CI. Moving the left lever further 'ahead than the right will cause the machine to turn to the right (01.

By crossing the levers (one forward and one backl the machine will turn in its own track (E & Fl. This also applies to reverse travel. The left hand steering lever can be used to maintain control of both steering levers. When traveling in forward. or reverse, by -pulling inward on the left hand lever, the right hand lever can be released. The right hand lever llliill be connected to the left, permitting free use of right hand to operate the engine throttle and switches.

The steering levers should be engaged slowly 1ince only a slight amount of lever movement is needed to move the machine. For maximum wheel power use less lever movement. To increase travel speed, use more lever movement. Avoid rough handling for it is both dangerous and will also shorten the life of the machine.

2. LIFT,· TilT & AUXILIARY CONTROLS: The foot pedals control the loader hydraulic system (Fig. 51. The left pedal is the lift arm control. The middle pedal (optional) is the auxiliary equipment control. The right pedal is the bucket (tilt) control. Press the heel of the left pedal to raise the lift arms and press the toe to lower them. Press the heel of the right pedal to roll the bucket back and press the toe to dump the bucket. The center pedal (auxiliaryl is used to control the various -attachments available for the Bobcat. Firm pressure on the toe of the left pedal places the lift arms into a "float" position, permitting them to follow rough ground.

3. TH ROTTlE CONTROL: The throttle control is located to the right of the right hand steering lever (Fig. 31. -Engine speed is increased by moving the lever forward and decreased by moving it to the rear.

4. CHOKE: The choke is located to the rear of the throttle control. When the choke control knob is fully forward it is in the "run" position.

5. DASH PANEL (Fig. 6): The instrument panel contains an ignition key (Item 1) for starting and running the engine. Two indicator lights (2 & 3), for the engine oil pressure (Oil) and transmission fluid pressure and temperature (Tran). An ammeter (4) indicates charging rate of alternator. An hour meter is also provided for recording engine operating time. It is located in the engine compartment to the right of the engine (Fig. 7).

PRE·STARTING INSPECTION

Fig. 6 Dash Panel

Before operating the Bobcat, complete the following inspection: (Fig. 8) 1. Check hydraulic fluid level, engine oil level and fuel supply.

2. Check for any sign of fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid leaks.

3. Lubricate the machine (see page 9).

4. Check lights (optional).

5. Check battery level and cables.

6. Check air cleaner for damage or leaks.

7. Check tire pressure: 50 PSI maximum.

8. Make a general walk·around inspection and look for any sign of loose parts, connections, etc.

STARTING PROCEDURE

WARNING Do not attempt to start the Bobcat unless seated in the seat with seat belt fastened.

During break·in, the Bobcat should be operated under light load conditions for the first eight hours. Each time the machine is used thereafter, allow the engine to warm·up for three to five minutes before putting the loader to heavy work.

NORMAL STARTING CONDITION

1. Adjust seat for comfort and fasten the seat belt.

2. Place steering and hydraulic controls in neutral (center) position.

3. Set throttle control to about 1/4 . 1/2 throttle.

4. Turn on the ignition key. The "Oil", and "Tran" lights should be lit.

5. Turn the key to "Start" and hold until engine starts. (It may be necessary to choke the engine slightly.)

When the engine has started, the warning lights should go out. The "Tran" light may remain on for a few seconds until the system builds up pressure. If of the lights fail to go out after a few seconds turn off the switch and find the cause of the problem. (Refer to the troubleshooting section of this manual.)

After starting the engine, allow it to warm-up for five minutes before operating controls. Raise and lower the lift arms and operate the bucket to check operation. •

COLD WEATHER STARTING CONDITIONS (Below 3:zOF.)

1. Follow steps one through four as in normal starting condition.

2.

3.

Pull the choke control back to. choke the engine.

Turn the ignition key to start and crank the engine. Do not run the starter for mJre than thirty seconds if engine fails to start. Allow the starter to cool for one minute before reusing.

4. Wlth engine running, reduce the choke partway and advance the throttle slightly. Check warning lights to see that they are out. When the engine is running smoothly move the choke to run position.

5. Allow the engine to run at least five to ten minutes to warm-up. This is very important for hydrostatic transmissions. At extremely cold temperatures (O°F. and below) warm-up time must be increased accordingly. If the "Tran'~ light comes on when attempting to operate the Bobcat, more warm-up time is needed.

BUCKET SIZE

Proper bucket size for the type of material handled will make Bobcat operate easier. Improper bucket size will cause the following problems: 1. Difficult steering and turning.

2. Excessive tire wear.

3. Rough handling and operation.

4. Pre-mature failure of loader.

TO OPERATE THE BOBCAT

1. Mount the bucket or attachment to be used.

2. The Bob-Tach is a system which allows fast changes for buckets or attachments. To mount an attachment, tilt the Bob-Tach slightly forward with lift arms_ in down position. Locking levers must be unlocked in the up position (Fig. 9). Mdve the Bobcat until the upper edge of the Bob-Tach is directly below the flange on the bucket or attachment (Fig. 9). Raise the lift arms until Bob-Tach lifts the attachment slightly. Tilt the Bob·Taeh back, allowing the attachment to swing into position (Fig. 10). Then lock the Bob-Tach by pushing the levers down, into the fully locked position. The levers must "over-center" when locked.

To remove an attac~ment place the lift arms in down position with attachment rolled back and dear of ground. Release the. locking levers by pulling up_ Tilt the Bob-Tach forward and slowly back Bobcat away.

3. Drive the Bobcat siol/llly to a level, clear area and practice operating the machine until familiarwith:(tS ,operation. .

Mounting Bucket

FILLING BUCKET FROM A PILE (Fig. 11)

1. With the lift arms in down position, press toe of tilt pedal to place the lip (cutting edge) of the bucket on the ground (A).

2. Drive fOrward into the pile and press heel of tilt pedal to raise the bucket lip as it fills (B).

3. Tilt the bucket back as far as it will go and back away.

OPERATION HINTS

1. Take full advantage of the Bobcat maneuverability. Keep the hauling distance as short as possible. Keep the working area small to keep cycle short (Fig. 12).

2. Keep the working area as level as possible.

3. The loader will .handle better with a rated full load then with a partial load.

4. Cycle time can be reduced by using a "pivot" spin rather than a "stop and go" turn.

5. Level the bucket while raising the load to keep material from spilling over the back of the· bucket.

Always carry the bucket low while driving.

DIGGING WITH THE BUCKET

Digging into ground: (Fig. 11) 1. Press toe of tilt control pedal to tilt

the bucket down until it contacts the ground (D).

2. Drive forward to penetrate the ground, lower the lift arms while driving forward (D).

3. Raise the bucket (tilt) slightly to increase traction and to keep a uniform depth (E).

4. Continue driving forward until the bucket is filled.

5. When the bucket is filled, tilt it back as far as it will ijO (F). In hard

ground conditions, bucket may be loaded easier by lowering cutting edge with the tilt control pedal. This is done at a slow forward speed, allowing the wheels to creep or slip slightly.

LEVELING AND BACKFILLING (Fig. 111

1. To fill a hole drive forward with bucket lowered on ground. Tilt bucket down to fill hole as soon as the edge of bucket is past the edge (GI.

2. To level, tilt the bucket down. Raise the cutting edge slightly off the ground and drive backwards (HI.

Float position on the lift arm control works well on some leveling jobs. To place lift arms in "Float" position, press hard on toe of lift control pedal until pedal "Locks" in this position (HI.

DUMPING THE BUCKET (Fig. 11)

-Keep the bucket low while moving to the dump area. Raise the bucket high enough to clear the side of the truck box. level the load by pressing on toe of tilt control (right) pedal as lift arms are raising. This will prevent any material from falling over the back of the bucket. Drive forward slowly until the loaded bucket is over the truck box. Press the toe 0 the bucket control pedal to tilt bucket down. If all the load is being dumped on the close side of the truck, it can be pushed to the far side of the box with the bucket (CI. The same procedure may be used in stock piling.

TOWING

Keep bucket low while moving to the dumping area. level the bucket whil~ the lift arms are being raised or part of the load may spill over the back of the bucket.

Attempting to tow the machine can result in transmission damage.

The Bobcat can be towed only if the side covers are taken off and the primary drive chains are removed, however, this is a job for the Bobcat dealer only. Do not exceed 5 MPH when towing.

TRANSPORTING BY PICKUP

Special steel ramps are available from Melrae to be used in loading the Bobcat onto a pickup or truck. Ramps are available in 8 and 10 foot lengths. Use a ramp length suitable for the transporting vehicle (Fig. 131.

Planks should not be used as a substitute for steel loading ramps.

After loading the Bobcat, ground the bucket. set the parking brake, then chain down the Bobcat to keep it in place during sudden stops or on steep grades.

Always BACK the Bobcat up any ramp or incline.

TRANSPORTING BY TRAILER

A special trailer is available for hauling the Bobcat Loader. This trailer is equipped with loading ramps. Drop the ramps to the ground for loading. After backing onto the trailer, raise and hook _'the loading ramps, then lower the bucket and chain the Bobcat in place.
