FROM THE RABBI’S DESKDear BRS Family, For many people, the Kol Ha'Nearim Aliyah is the highlight of Simchas Torah. Seeing hundreds and hundreds of children gathered under our world record tallis is uplifting and inspiring. And yet, while many are exhilarated seeing the joy on their children's faces, unfortunately, too many can't share in that experience and as a result dread Simchas Torah morning. Part of celebrating Torah as a community is attempting to be as sensitive and thoughtful as possible to all members of our community. Towards that end, please note the following:

• For children with special needs who find the Kol Ha'Nearim Aliyah in the Rand Sanctuary noisy, crowded or overwhelming, we will be hosting an additional, special Kol Ha'Nearim aliyah in a separate, quiet room at 10:30am in room 104/105 led by Rabbi Josh Broide.

• Prior to the Kol Ha'Nearim Aliyah in the Rand Sanctuary, we will be taking a moment to recite a special prayer on behalf of all those trying to have children. If you have name(s) of anyone to be thought of during that time, please come see me before hand (The names are not recited out-loud)

May Hashem answer all our prayers for good and may we merit to celebrate the simcha of Torah. Wishing you a gut kvitel,

PRAYER FOR FERTILITY

He who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and our mothers Sara, Rivka, Rachel and Lea, may He bless all those who are barren and grant them with a fine, suitable and good child. May Hashem give them blessing with his name and bless their home, so they may know that their home is at peace. May Hashem endow the child with a pure soul, establish all the elements needed to complete and preserve the child, and imbue the child with splendor, charm, kindness and compassion, health, courage, vigor and strength. May Hashem have mercy when he forms and shapes the child's limbs, and may Hashem present the child complete in mind, soul and spirit and in body, both internally and externally. May none of the child's limbs be damaged or missing, wounded or diseased. Cause the child to be born in an auspicious hour, a time of blessing and success. May the child live a good, long and peaceful life, both spiritually and materially, with riches and honor among all the people of Israel. May Hashem bless us with blessings from the heavens above, blessings from the depths that lie below, blessings of parenthood. May Hashem fulfill in us the purpose for which man was fashioned in his world, for he created and formed it to be populated. Hear our voice eternal God, and accept our prayer in compassion and favor. Do not turn us away empty handed from before you, and fulfill our request for the good, may it be so, now let us respond: Amen.

Boca Raton Synagogue • Valuing Diversity • Celebrating UnityPage 3

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior.

Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT

In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • For men: if you "borrow: someone else's talit and tefilin bag, put it back where you took it from.• For women: If you use one of the Shul's scarf, please put it back in the basket provided. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

An Evening with Dina Hurwitz: A Story of Hope and Inspiration

SUNDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 29at 7:00 pm in the BRS Social Hall

Introductory remarks by Rebbetzin Yocheved GoldbergDina Hurwitz is a proud mother of seven children. Her life was turned upside down when, in 2013, her husband, Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, was diagnosed with ALS. Amidst battling her husband's terrible illness and raising her family, Dina outrageously inspires through sharing her honest reflections of faith and hope during the most trying of times. Dina’s message of devotion, faith, tenacity, motherhood and gratitude will impact you like never before. Her smile lights up the room, and she will make you laugh and cry all in one breath.

KOL HANE’ARIM TALLITWe are only days away from, once again, using our Guinness World Record gigantic and beautiful Kol Hane’arim Tallit. We are in need of a team of at least 40 strong men to volunteer on Simchat Torah morning in order to setup, hold, and put away the Tallit. If you are interested in being part of this team, please come to the front of the Rand Sanctuary at 11:00 am on Simchat Torah morning for the big event.

We are especially grateful to Dr. Ashi & Chava Weisstuch for their sponsorship of the center of our Kol Hane’arim Tallit. The Weisstuchs have sponsored the Tallit in loving memory of her beloved father, Henry Kamioner.

We would also like to thank our corner sponsors Moshe & Channi Bertram, Dr. Robert and Judith Bruckstein, Saul & Bobbie Friedman, and Dr. Merv and Elaine Jacobs.

SOCIAL ACTIONThe government of the Kingdom of Belgium has frozen its projects involving schools in the Palestinian Authority, at least until it can determine what happens with those projects after the funds are received and spent. The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Education has named at least 31 schools after terrorists. Palestinian Media Watch notified the Belgian government that one of the school buildings funded by Belgium — the Beit Awwa Basic Girls School — subsequently changed its name to the Dalal Mughrabi Elementary School to honor the Palestinian Authority female terrorist who led the Coastal Road Massacre bus hijacking and murder of 37 people, including 12 children. According to the Belgian Development Agency, Belgium has built 23 Palestinian Authority schools since 2001, and was planning to build 10 more in the coming years, “When the school building was handed over to the local community in 2013 it was called ‘Beit Awwa Basic Girls School,’ [but] subsequently the name was changed to ‘Dalal Mughrabi Elementary School. The Belgian government was unaware of this name change. Belgium unequivocally condemns the glorification of terrorist attacks, and will not allow itself to be associated with the names of terrorists in any way.”

שמיני עצרת-שמחת תורהבראשית

Shemini Atzeret - Simhat TorahBereishit

Rashi points out the error of translating the opening pasuk of the Torah as “In the beginning, Hashem created the Heavens and the earth.” If that were the intention, the Torah should have said בראשונה – ‘in the beginning,’ as opposed to בראשית, which means ‘in the beginning of ’. Additionally, if the Torah was trying to list a sequence of creation, it would lead to a self-contradictory conclusion. If that were the case, the first pasuk seems to indicate that the Heavens and sky were created before the land, whereas in the larger scheme, the sky is clearly created on the second day. Moreover, the next pasuk discusses water and wind, which have no prior mention of being created. If the Torah meant to describe a sequence, it is not doing so in the most productive or understandable manner.Rashi therefore suggests that the Torah instead opens with an introductory remark, “In the beginning of creating the Heavens and the earth” and goes on to describe generally how things were. Since the seemingly literal translation is clearly incorrect, Rashi quotes a Midrash that gives an additional level of understanding to explain the term בראשית as “on account of that which is described as ראשית” –referring to both Torah and Bnei Yisrael. Maharal points out that the Midrash lists several other ideas that are referred to as ראשית and yet Rashi only chose to highlight Torah and Bnei Yisrael. He explains that Rashi is highlighting two important bookends. Hazal teach us that the Torah was created prior to the world; that Hashem used the Torah as the blueprint for the world. Conversely, in the Torah’s historical scheme, Bnei Yisrael are the very last nation to be formed; all of the other national origins are sourced prior to Ya’akov’s children becoming a nation. Rashi’s intent is to show that Hashem created this world with a plan, one in which the Jewish people, are to be the protagonists and all that occurs in between are means to help us attain this goal.

The Shulhan Arukh writes that regarding each Shabbat and Yom Tov we are to ‘add on’ some additional time at both the onset and ending of the respective days. This additional time is called תוספת שבת or יום טוב תוספת (Tosefet Shabbat or Tosefet Yom Tov). This additional time has the full sanctity of Shabbat or Yom Tov and during that time, we are prohibited from doing any and all activities that are normally prohibited on Shabbat and Yom Tov.Most Poskim assume that during this additional time, we may perform and thereby fulfill certain mitzvot that must be performed on Shabbat and Yom Tov. For example, the Shulhan Arukh writes that we may make kiddush during this time of Tosefet and do not need to repeat it again once the ‘official’ time of Shabbat or Yom Tov begins. One exception to this rule is Shemini Atzeret where the Poskim advise being somewhat more careful about accepting Yom Tov early. Since up until Shemini Atzeret begins it is still Sukkot, if we were to accept Shemini Atzeret early, then we would effectively have a mixed-juggernaut period of Sukkot-Shemini Atzeret. While not technically problematic, this would present an insurmountable problem for kiddush. If it is still Sukkot, then we must recite בסוכה thereafter before eating. It if is Shemini Atzeret, then לישיב while the Shulhan Arukh requires that we eat in the Sukkah, no berakhah is recited. To avoid this conundrum, the Poskim advise delaying kiddush on Shemini Atzeret until after צאת הכוכבים.
